You say that these are recessed lights, so I’ll take a guess that they are not flourescents. So we can rule out a ballast. If there is power to the switch, is it on both sides of the switch? If not, the switch is bad. If there is power to both sides of the switch, you probably have a loose connection on the neutral. These don’t normally just fall apart if you have not been working around the wires. DO you have copper or aluminum wiring? Connections can get loose if you have aluminum and this is a safety issue! I would suggest not to buy a set. in 99.99% of the cases you will end up with more than one knife that you’d never use. Or knives with very similar designation. Either way, you’re paying for something you don’t need.

The minimum set which covers 99% of home cutting is:
3-4″ paring/peeling knife;
6-12″ chef’s knife
8-12in serrated bread slicer.

After that you can add boning knife if you work with bony meat, poultry. BTW, boning knives are not the same as meat cleavers, i.e. not designed to chop through the bones, but to work around them.

Don’t believe all the marketing BS that good kitchen knives have to be forged, and have full bolster and tang. None of that is true. E.g. Stamped Globals are much better performers than most of the forged mainstream kitchen knives. katana swords and bowie knives are not full tang, yet they can cut through armor and leather, so I really doubt you need more strength than that. Bolsters make sense only on narrow boning knives to protect your hand from slippage, but on other wider knives blade choil area does the job, bolster just makes sharpening a nightmare.

Avoid both, Cutco and Furi knives. Both are real junk metal knives, except one is really outrageously priced, Cutco. Both have rusting issues, can’t hold the edge worth a dime and both have very misleading marketing.

Forschner knives will be your best bet. They’re made of the same X50CrMoV15 steel. hardened to the same 54-56HRC as Wusthofs and Henckels and many other mainstream kitchen knives, but cost half the price or even less.

Alternatively, you could look into Japanese kitchen knives, but those are much harder blades, which means both, longer lasting, thinner sharp edges and more difficult sharpening

I recently had to clean a LOT of grease in my new house (I don’t think the previous occupants ever cleaned). I pretreated with vinegar – let that sit for a bit, then used citra-solve (I think that’s what it’s called?). Citra solve is basically citrus oil. It’s supposed to be diluted, but there was so much grease I mainly used full strength.

Also, you may want to scrape off a layer with a putty knife (yuck). That’s what I had to do first. Scraped right off after the vinegar pre-treat.

• Clean up the clutter. You’ll be surprised at how much space this frees up.  If you have a computer in the kitchen area, put the tower under the desk and the printer in a cabinet overhead.

• Thoroughly clean your cabinets. My suggestion is that you have a licensed electrician look at the problem. Depending on the condition of the wiring all you may need is to replace the fixtures. If the wiring is in bad shape then you would need to have the bad section of wiring replaced. Set 1 has 5″ partoku, 7″ santoku, and 9″ scalloped knife, but no chef’s knife, the most widely used knife you’ll find. The scalloped knife is great for bread, and will have various other uses down the road. I don’t like the feel of santoku and partoku knives – I rarely use them. They require you to slice in a manner that I don’t feel is comfortable.

Set 3 looks interesting, but the silver handles become a bit slippery with use.

Set 2 looks the best to me, with the included 8″ chef’s knife. The rest of the set is solid, but the steak knives are gimmicky. These are high quality, ergonomically balanced, high-carbon steel knives. They are reasonably priced, and at home, they’re accessible in the storage block – no digging in the drawers.

I think you’ll be happy with set 2.

First let’s remember that we usually dream to solve conflicts; if something hurts or is bothering us, we dream to settle it, so we can continue to sleep, and so we can have more peace in our waking hours.

Dad has an injury to the brain, the mind, that which is revealed as in, can be seen through glass, if one is allowed to get close to the pane/pain. (It is not an accident that you used the term, “real enough to cut through glass,” because you wanted his CLEAR, READABLE, SEEABLE, brain/mind back. (I’ll deal with no one saying anything, in the context below.)

Dad is never going to get better, and this hurt you, upset you, so you resolved the conflict by “writing” your dream, so that he would be better. You NEEDED him to be better.

Your family and you become silent on the way HOME. That is, “What is home without father?” Home was a place that included him, but now it won’t, because your momentary need to make him okay isn’t working in the dream, and that is unspeakable.

You have made him better, but have you really? The silence is the loss of your father, telling you that you haven’t really resolved the conflict; it is still nagging at you. Silence, as in death; silence, as in brain injury that affects the ability to speak coherently or at all. Silence, also, as in absence of sounds, the sounds your father would have been making, had he survived whole and intact.

It’s eery, because you sense that HOME will NOT BE HOME, if your dad doesn’t recover, and it’s clear you wanted him to, because for a few beats there, you did make him recover.

Again, overwhelmed with happiness, but disturbed; you are not CAPABLE, as HARD AS YOU TRY to change the reality; you try, you become happy, but the TRUTH that he didn’t recover is running the dream, is facing you in ways that you can’t change by “writing” the dream the way you want it to be.

He leaned against the island. I don’t know what an “island” in this context means, but he’s no longer DAD; he’s a man with a brain injury, LEANING on the family, barely able to stand straight in life, as the dad you NEED him to be, the dad you recognized and loved.

He watches out the window. He is no longer in the life you are all now sharing; he is left out. The world is OUTSIDE his brain, his usual way of thinking; he can’t participate; he is left only to see, to watch. (This is really sad.)

This sadness leads all of you to deal with the situation in your own ways and to realize that you are ALL now SEPARATE from your dad (as well as vulnerable to illnesses and injuries among yourselves), that your lives with him will never be on the same level, as they had always been. His brain injury has separated him from all of you, and you become, for awhile, isolated from each other in trying to cope with this new, sad reality.

And, yes, dear YaYa, I’d have bawled my eyes out, also. Your dream started by your being able to fix the situation, but moved on to the truth of the unfixable injury, and ended with you and your family having to come to isolated and lonely terms with change, deep sorrow and loss.

Generally going darker with the trim closes the rooms in a little. We have a double brick bungalow built in the same era and the rooms are very compartmentalised and anything to open it up and make it flow better is good. We had different colours for different rooms and it looked wrong. Then we painted the whole thing with a very neutral colour (Dulux Hogbristle half strength) and did the archetraves and skirting boards in a bright white (Dulux Fair Bianca Half strength) and it looks fantastic. We have hardwood archetraves and windows and skirting boards but decided to keep them white. We have floorboards and timber mantles and that’s enough timber to colour it up. It looks fantastic. It flows well from room to room and has a very fresh feel. And we can dress it up with whatever we like (furnishings, art work etc) and it looks great. But in saying that, you’re the one who has to live with it so you need to do whatever makes you happy. My sister has dark timber archetraves and skirting boards and internal doors and I hate it. Maybe visit friends and see what other people have done and whether you like it or not. Remember if you get it wrong you’re the one who has to repaint it so don’t rush in if you’re not sure because it’s a lot of hard work and paint is expensive.

Do you want to use these towels or are they just for decoration? It’s hard to find, in fabric stores, the kind of fabric they make most kitchen towels out of, nice absorbent stuff. People just don’t sew towels much these days. You used to be able to, and sometimes still can, buy towelling off a bolt but it isn’t too exciting for colour as a rule. Haven’t seen it for years. I think you might just have to go to local fabric stores and see what they have that will work and is the right colour. It should be 100% cotton if you want to use the towels, and linen of course is a fine dish towel fabric if you can find any suitable and don’t mind the price. Linen/cotton blend is fine too. A waffle weave cotton would be great if you can find a 100% cotton one. Just stay away from any synthetics unless they have some fabulous new thing like an absorbent microfibre. Synthetics don’t usually absorb water and are frustrating to use as towelling.

It’s not a good idea to have a high-carbon steel knife anymore, especially because they can oxidize and discolor acidic fruits and vegetables, leaving traces of black on everything. If you REALLY need the knife or have sentimental attachment to it, I would say a plastic scouring pad and some lava soap would do the trick, but if you don’t, i’d hit the local williams-sonoma for a nice Wusthof french knife, or if you want to be fancy, a Kyocera ceramic knife that won’t oxidize anything.

Don’t make your air conditioner work harder than it has to  – warm air entering through cracks around window and door frames, electrical outlets, and attic doors all keep your air conditioner’s compressor running longer, costing you more.

Taking the following steps now will help reduce both air conditioning and heating costs:

·                Check for air leaks around doors and windows

·                Use caulk, insulation, or weather stripping to seal air leaks to reduce drafts

·                Add attic insulation

·                Insulate duct work

Year round energy savings can be achieved with the use of a programmable thermostats for cooling and heating. An empty house or apartment doesn’t need to be kept cool all day. Even many newer window air conditioners have timers that can be set to cool things down in time for your arrival home from work.

Ceiling fans should also be used year round. During warm weather the ceiling fan should be set to turn in a counter-clockwise direction. The breeze created by this airflow creates a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler.

When it’s hot outside, don’t create more heat inside:

·                Minimize the use of heat producing appliances during the hottest part of the day, such as a clothes dryer or dish washer

·                When cooking use an outdoor grill, a microwave, or a toaster oven to avoid heating up the kitchen by turning on a full sized oven

·                Minimize the use of heat producing light bulbs –replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents that produce less heat

·                Close shades, blinds, or drapes on windows that in are in full sunlight

Both central air conditioning systems and individual room air conditioners need to be kept in good running condition for maximum efficiency:

·                Change or clean filters at least once a month

·                Keep coils clean and dust free

·                Make sure you have a proper sized unit – a unit that is too big lowers the temperature without running long enough to reduce the humidity to a comfortable level resulting in a cold clammy feeling

Consider investing in a central air conditioning system if a number of your individual air conditioning units need replacing. A central air conditioning system is more expensive to purchase up front but it can result in lower energy costs over time.

73″ TALL??????? That’s 6’1″????? Surely you mean 6′ from the ceiling to the bottom of the fixture including the cord, not top of the fixture to the bottom of the fixture??? Well, besides that….a basically 6″ wide fixture is not going to put off alot of light on a 4′ long island. I’d say 2, no more and no less. As for the spacing….take the 42″ and divide it by 3 to evenly space them apart. Use a pencil to mark the spacing out on the countertop so you can wipe it off later and use a laser to shoot a beam up to the ceiling. They are pretty cheap nowadays.

If you want chocolate, go for it! I have a small kitchen in my home with no outside windows, so it’s dark.

I love the color red (dark red). I painted one wall a very dark red and ragged bronze highlights over the top….it’s stunning!

I’d paint your wall chocolate brown, and rag gold highlights over the top of it. The gold will lighten it up some, and make the room look very “rich.”

Add some throw pillows that have gold in them, and your room will be gorgeous!

Also if it darkens the room too much, get some “up” lights, and tuck them into corners so they shine their light up the wall, and brighten everything up.

You can do very dark colors, even in tiny spaces and have it come out looking stunning if you do it right. Sticking to painting just one wall is a good way to do it too.

You’re on the right track, going with cleaner lines and less fuss than most think of when doing “country”. What colors do you like? You can adapt nearly any color scheme to work so don’t let the “theme” back you into a color you’re not crazy about!

Scour yard sales, auctions, tag sales for a accessories and some furniture pieces. Minor repairs, a new coat of paint and new hardware do wonders!

We painted all our cabinets (painted cabinets seem more “country”) and most of the walls in cream. Husband made my counters out of wood planks and stained them oak with a tung oil finish and they are beautiful! And they are holding up well. It’s been about 4 years since we put them in and they could use another coat of tung oil but overall, I’m quite happy with them. We have a country but not busy print wallpaper on the back splash area and the soffit area above the sink. Accessories are crocks, old kitchen tools, simple fabrics like cotton, linen, unbleached muslin all work. But on the modern end, I have black and stainless appliances. I keep rugs simple but within the colors in the room, same for the chair upholstery. And I even had a small washstand that is painted barn red in there. Take your time, buy what you love and work within the colors you like and it will look awesome!

Maybe you and the other two cook roommates should have a meeting, see how all of you feel. If you all feel the same way, then call a “apartment meeting” – make it seem as though this is the new thing, the meeting between the three of you never happened. Then say

“It seems as though we all like to cook and eat together, and shop together to save gas, but lately I’ve been feeling like things may be unbalanced as far as splitting the cost evenly. What if we would start a system of grocery shopping together once a week, and rotating who drives each week – then we’d each only have to drive once a month? Also, as far as splitting food, I think we need to make sure it is even – if someone cooks something, and everyone else partakes, we should have a set dollar amount (such as $2 a meal) that you owe if someone else cooks and you eat it.”

I would just approach it gently, and don’t make it seem as if you’re ganging up on her. If she balks, just stop offering her food. If she grabs a plate and helps herself, just say “That’ll be $2 please.” Don’t be rude, don’t gang up on her, just make sure everyone abides by the same rules – you eat, you pay.

*edit* I like the idea of if you cook, she cleans up if she eats, but again, make sure it seems even – if you don’t think it’s worth what you spent on the food, say “$1 a plate, plus you clean up, since we cooked”

Ok… think about this logically… Yes, soap dispenseres transfer germs. Any surface you touch does. But it doesn’t matter if you touch it because you haven’t washed your hands yet! Whatever germs you acquire from dispensing a squirt of soap are washed away when you actually was your hands. So, just get a normal regular old hand soap with a normal hand pump. Do not use bar soap… it actually does spread germs. If you are really concerned about germs, then the important thing isn’t the soap dispenser, it’s the faucet handle. You should use a paper towel to turn it off. Here’s my ideas for your new bathroom
1) get regular pump soap (not bar soap)
2)Turn the handle off with a papertowel. How do you do this without actually keeping paper towels in your bathroom? get a pretty napkin holder and buy napkins with the theme of your bathroom on them (i.e. if your bathroom is decorated in palm trees, you can get palm tree napkins). Get a pretty napkin holder and set them there as though they were decoration and use them when your grandkids are around. After your grandkids leave, just use lysol or cholrox anywhere to kill any germs left behind. If it’s just you and your husband, you should be fine.
3) When there are guests over, just let them use the normal towel that you have hanging. If you want, you could just keep a small hand towel in your cabinet in your bathroom and take it out when you wash your hands… so basically, just let everyone else use the dirty towel…. I know that sounds bad. This whole thing isn’t really even necessary because towels are actually not that germy if the person using them has clean hands… which is usuallly the reason for using a towel in the first place…. to dry clean hands.

I would NOT place a gas stove in front of a window, however, because if I open the window, the draft will interfere with the gas flames. Unless you plan to keep the window closed while cooking, this can be a problem. Drafts can also blow out pilot lights, so give this some thought.
