The Vinegar Method
Put your towels in the washing machine, using the hottest water available. Add one or two cups of white vinegar. Do not add detergent, fabric softener, or any other products at this time. Run the washer.
Leave the towels in the washer and wash the same load again just as you would normally with laundry soap. Again, use the hottest water available. Don’t use fabric softener or any other products.
Dry the load in the dryer using a high heat setting. Towels should be thoroughly dry when you pull them out. If they’re not dry, put them back in, or move them immediately outside and hang them in the sunlight.

The Ammonia Method
Put your towels in the washing machine.
Add a normal amount of detergent.
Use the hottest water available. Do not add fabric softener or any other products.
Watch for the rinse cycle and add one cup of sudsy or clear ammonia during the rinse cycle.
Let the washing machine finish.
Move the towels out of the washer immediately. Fully dry the load right away using normal dryer settings, or hanging on the line on a sunny day.

It is frustrating when a lighting designer recommends a certain type of lighting and then doesn’t follow up with the source of the fixtures. I would go back to the designers and lean on them to find the fixtures for you. That is their business and they have immediate access to far more resources than you do. I wish I could offer a better solution, but I don’t have an easy answer. I can tell you that I have done as I have advised and found results every time. I have to admit that being a builder offers some leverage with the designers.

Well, it depends on what sealer is already on the wood. If it is an oil-based sealer, you’ll need to use an oil-based sealer coating. You can get this at any paint store. It’ll waterproof your wood pretty much and will protect against scratches. I do however suggest that you coat the entire surface, not just the top. Use a clear sealer so the color stays the same.

But just a thought…. have you thought about going to a stone mason or wherever they sell marble. If your dresser is small enough, you can get a remnant for a relatively good price and have a marble top made for it….

What about fitting a mirror to cover the available wall space? You mention that it’s for a basement so guess that light is at a premium – this way you would reflect whatever light you have got, back into your bathroom & make it appear a lot lighter and larger. You’d have to get the mirrored glass cut and fitted specially, but think it could be worth it. We did this on our bathroom wall and it looks fabulous.

I think that’s a cool idea! Especially since it’s for an office and not a main room in the house. And the wall colours? Very busy, but if by using the M&M’s as a theme, it will all make sense. Absolutely. The drain line that comes out of the wall or floor may not be in the best place, but you can make this happen. You will be connecting drains similarly to those in a double bowl kitchen sink. You will have the two sink “tailpieces” to which you will connect your drain lines and sink traps. Or, depending on ease of access to the existing piping after the new sinks are installed, you could use one trap. Eventually, both lines will connect to a T and then extend to either your wall or floor drain outlet. The supply plumbing will need to be T’d from the existing hot and cold to the new hot and cold locations. You may be using the hot and cold that come out of the wall or floor as merely main supplies to which you will T right and left from each pipe. Call a glass shop and tell them what you want. They can usually cut the glass to order, deliver and install it cheaper than you can order one from a furniture store. I used to work as a designer for a high end furniture store and I was always appalled at how expensive good mirrors were. My husband is a general contractor and we do mirrors for very expensive residential bathrooms (framed and unframed) all the time and the cost is a fraction of what the furniture store charged. Plus, you can order exactly what you want–if you can describe it or draw it–they can make it for you.

I had custom mirrors installed in my modern kitchen as a backsplash and also had a custom corner mirrored unit with 1/2 inch glass display shelves above my corner sink—whole cost? About $400 including installation–and that’s a whole lot more glass and complicated installation than one single glass mirror like you’re talking about. The water is turned off by twisting this tab 90 deg to be crossways to the pipe using a “water meter key,” a simple but specific tool you can buy at the hardware store for $10 – $20. Have you ever considered giving your cat a bath? Your dog and cat both require a certain amount of maintenance to keep them happy and healthy. While most cats are self-sufficient, all cats could use a little boost in the bathing department.

When it comes to cat care, very few cat owners think to give their cat a bath. A bath can help get rid of excess fur during the shedding season.

You could take your cat to the veterinarian or a professional groomer and have them give your cat a bath, but giving your cat a bath on your own isn’t all that difficult. As long as you have patience and take things slowly, the two of you can get through the ordeal in one piece.

Before you think of bathing, give your cat a good brushing. Use a soft brush or grooming glove for short haired felines. For cats with longer fur, use a wide-toothed comb. Don’t brush too hard. Cats don’t have very thick skin like their wild cousins, the big cats.

Brush out any tangles and check the cat over for any sores or abscesses. Clean the cat’s ears and trim its nails. If your cat starts to get a little antsy, take everything in stages. Start with one task, then put the cat down and come back to the next task later.

While your cat is off wandering the house and working off stress, you can get the bath ready. Make sure you have a soft towel and shampoos made for your cat at hand. Remember that your cat will be licking himself after the wash, and some soaps might have a residue that could make your cat sick if ingested.

If you can, use your kitchen sink as a tub. The sink is much easier to work with than trying to bend over a tub. Place a towel in the bottom of the sink as a mat to keep your cat from slipping. The most important thing is to give your cat a bath in a warm room so that afterwards, he’ll have a warm place to dry off.

When you’re ready to bathe your cat, put cotton balls in its ears to help keep the water out. Run some lukewarm water into the sink, but don’t fill the sink all the way. You might want to fill the sink first, since the sound of the rushing water could make your cat nervous, especially if he knows what’s coming.

Try not to restrain your cat too much either. If the cat feels like it’s being trapped, you’ll have a harder time holding it through this cat care process.

Keep talking to the cat calmly and reassuringly. Don’t yell or try to scold him if he decides not to cooperate. If you’re nervous, your cat will be nervous, too. Hissing, flattened ears and yowling are all signs that you have a very stressed kitty on your hands.

To wet the coat, pour water over your cat. You can also take a thin towel, wrap it around your cat, and wet its fur through the towel. Once the fur is wet, apply shampoo, and then rinse well. When you rinse your cat, try to avoid using the spray nozzle. If your cat didn’t like the sound of running water, the hiss of the spray won’t be calming at all.

Make sure that you get all the shampoo out of its fur. When you’re done rinsing, dry your cat by blotting instead of scrubbing. Blotting long fur is far more effective than rubbing the towel over the cat’s body.

If your cat will tolerate the noise from this cat care routine, you can use a hair dryer on the lowest setting. If you can’t use the dryer, that’s okay. Dry your cat as much as you can and let it go find a warm place to dry off.

The best advice for bathing a cat is to start while the cat is young so that they become familiar with this form of cat care. If you get your cat used to bathing early in life and make the first experience as enjoyable as you can, your cat will be more cooperative in the future.

You can wash them. You shouldn’t dry them in the machine. Lay them across something (like a couple of chair backs), so air can get at both sides. Heavy ones may take a day or too to get really dry.

Use warm water. Washing them in hot water (especially doing it more than a couple of times, but sometimes even on the first time) will make the rubber backing start to crumble.

A lot of people look to their sinks, tubs or even tiles to set the tone in the bathroom. While these can achieve a certain feel in the room, when a quick update is desired the place to look is at the bathroom vanities themselves. Offering a relatively affordable, easy way to update a bathroom, these fixtures can take little time to switch out, too.

I think the black marble is very traditional. Sculptors used it. It is very luxurious but does need cleaning, polishing and maintenance to keep it luxurious. You could still use white for your toilet and maybe a Grey tile on the floor and shower. Or a white tile picking up the black. You could use a Merlot on the walls to warm it up and frame out your mirror which I would run from the ceiling to the back splash. Add some traditional wall sconces with black shades or crystal ones. You could still go into the neutral brown family. Add a wall towel heater for a European look.

You could use a black and white toile wallpaper. If you do not have to paint your cabinets, a rich cherry wood stain would look great with the black. I would use nickle faucets or even a bronze. It you had cherry or mahogany woods, I would frame the mirror in that.

You could, instead, add individual round contemporary mirrors above each sink. Add an oriental rug.

I would use high hats with a white baffle for task lighting.
I would not let the black and white dictate comtemporary.

You didn’t state whether it’s hot/cold supply or waste.

If it’s on a waste pipe connection you can get replacement washer kits but more often than not it’s just as easy to replace the trap (if that’s where the leak is) or the joint (if it’s push-fit or compression). When you’ve got it all apart check for, and remove, burrs on the ends of the plastic pipes. Any on the inside can trap hairs and other crud causing partial or eventually complete blockages. Any on the outside can damage rubber seals or get under them causing leaks. Also check for cuts or nicks where the seals sit on the pipes as these will be almost impossible to make leak-proof. Replace the pipe if necessary.

If the leak is on a threaded supply connection you turn off the water, dismantle the leaking joint, check the olive for damage, put a few turns of ptfe tape around the olive, and reassemble and tighten it up (don’t overtighten it, though). If the joint uses rubber washers take them out, make sure the parts the squeeze up against are clean and lime-free, put new washers in, and reassemble and tighten the joint. You can then turn the water on and check for leaks.

If the leak is on a soldered connection it’s sometimes possible to turn off the water, drain the affected part of the system down, and use heat, flux and UNLEADED solder to re-solder the joint. Usually, though, it’s easier to to cut out the leaking section and replace it with new.

If the leak is on a push-fit plastic supply pipe go and turn off the water supply to it NOW. A leak on copper can just sit there and drip a little for months, or even years. A leak on plastic push-fit will get worse VERY quickly – the worst scenario is that the joint will pop off while you’re out causing flooding. For plastic push-fit a repair is, really, just a case of dismantling the joint, checking the pipe for damage/burrs etc, then putting a new joint on. If the pipe is damaged you may need to replace a section. There are various types of push-fit some of which can be disassembled by hand – some of which needs a special tool.

You can use the vanity unit immediately.

If you’ve used any solvent weld joints you’ll have to let the assembled joints harden off for however long is specified on the solvent tin. IIRC it’s usually about 12 hours. I’ve not covered solvent weld because it is rarely used for bathroom refits (so unlikely to be your problem), and due to the hazardous solvent is really a job for a plumber.

Fungal infections in the toenail are a difficult problem to treat.  Even if you get a prescription medication from your doctor, an infection may not clear up for 8 to 10 months.  Moreover, fungal infections are extremely contagious.  They can spread from nail to nail and from foot to foot.  You can also give them to other people so you should be conscientious when sharing showers or walking around the house barefoot.  If you have a fungal toenail infection, or have had infections in the past, you should do your best to prevent the infection from spreading or prevent it from coming back.  Prevention, in the case of fungal toenail infections, is much more efficient and effective than treatment.  

Fungal infections tend to increase with age and are a particularly common problem for the elderly.  If you are caring for an older person with a history of fungal toenail infections, you may need to help him inspect his feet so infections can be spotted early.  Impaired vision or reduced mobility may make it difficult for an elderly person to notice an infection on his own.  Men are twice as likely to acquire fungal toenail infections as women.  Athletes of all ages should also be on the look out.

Minor infections can generally be treated with a topical ointment or power.  If your infection is particularly painful or aggressive, you will want to talk to your doctor about a prescription medication.  Some people choose to have their toenail removed to prevent the spreading of the fungus.  

Here are some tips to help you prevent fungal toenail infections in the future, or to help you prevent your infection from spreading:

1.  Change your shoes often.  If you are an athlete, you will want to make sure your athletic shoes dry thoroughly before putting them on again.  Have enough pairs of shoes that you can rotate often and never have to wear a pair that is still damp or sweaty.  You can remove the shoe’s insoles to help them dry faster.

2.  Wear flip-flops in the locker rooms and shower.  As a courtesy to the people you live with, you may want to wear flip-flops in the shower even at home – and recommend that they do the same as well until your infection clears up.  Use bleach to clean your shower on a weekly basis, and keep the bathmat and bathroom floor as clean and dry as possible.  

3.  Use an anti-fungal powder or spray in your shoes.  If you have particularly sweaty feet, you can try an antiperspirant spray to help keep your foot dray.

4.  Cut your toenails straight across.  If you cut them too short, you may expose or cut the delicate skin under the nail, which will enable to fungus to enter.  If you let them grow to long, you will end up jamming your toes into shoes which could likewise cause the skin the break and give the fungus a way of entering.

In many homes, the bathroom is nothing more than a place for dumping dirty laundry or storing endless bottles of shampoo and hair remover. In the mornings and evenings it’s a whirlwind of activity as each family member takes their turn to get clean. Too often it’s a war zone with everyone’s personal items stuffed into all the available cabinets and drawers. It’s a chaotic mess that does nothing to invite anyone inside.

The bathroom is meant to be a place of rest and relaxation, that place where you can sink into a hot bath or enjoy a steaming shower after a long, hard day. It’s supposed to be that one place where you find sanctuary from the world and enjoy the serenity of your surroundings. If your bathroom is closer to a war zone than a peaceful sanctuary, something needs to be done to change it. Not only can a refurbished bathroom add thousands to the value of your home, but it also makes you feel better about going in there every morning.

A bathroom offers myriad opportunities for sprucing up: the bath, the shower, the rails and handles fixed onto the walls, the floor and wall tiles, the light fixtures and, finally, the bathroom vanity. Couples should consider the needs and tastes of both people. Although guys might not look past their own reflections in the mirror, the design should take his personal tastes into consideration too. First Things First

The first thing your need to do is get rid of the sink or vanity that’s already in your bathroom and get the space ready for your new vanity. Check under the vanity to see how it’s attached – probably with some screws through a rail on the back (often called a “nailer”), or in the corners. While your head is under the countertop, look to see how your countertop and sink are attached to the base. Again there may be screws holding the top in place, or it may just be held in place with glue.

Removing your old vanity will be easier if you take off the top (it will be lighter). Finally use a utility knife and run the blade around the edge, cutting through any caulking holding the vanity edges to the walls or backsplash.

Taking Out the Old Vanity

As in any plumbing project, before you begin, turn off the water to your bathroom. Hopefully this means closing the shut off valves on the water feed lines to the vanity, but in some cases it might mean you need to shut off the water to the whole house. You’ll need an adjustable wrench to disconnect the supply tubes from the faucet bases, and a large wrench or slip joint pliers to undo the drain. (It’s a good idea to have a bucket handy when you open the drain to catch the water that’s remaining in the trap.)

Take off the doors and remove the drawers from the vanity. If there is any molding around the base of the vanity, remove it as well. Now get down on your knees and take out the screws holding the vanity to the wall, and if you’re going to take off the top, undo the screws holding it in place or use a pry bar to break it away from the base.

You should be able to slide the vanity out and away from the wall, but in some cases you may have to pry it away from the wall. If you do, use a thin scrap of wood to protect the wall from the pry bar. It’s a good idea to put down a thin sheet of plywood or even an old blanket to prevent gouging your floor when sliding the vanity.

Once you’ve removed the old vanity, inspect the area for any damage. This is when you can repair any dings or water damage in the walls and ensure your floor is sound and level.

Carefully measure the height and width of your new vanity. Determine where you want to position it and mark the edge locations with vertical lines. Now, measure and mark up from the floor in three places the height of your vanity. Use the highest mark and draw a level line through it, joining the two vertical lines. You now have an exact outline for the placement of your vanity.

Carefully measure the locations of the water pipes and drain lines coming out of the wall and transfer those measurements onto the back of your vanity. Use a hole saw (at least 1/2″ larger than the pipes) and drill holes for your water lines. Cut the cutout for the drain with a larger hole saw or a saber saw.

Verify where at least one stud is in the wall behind your new vanity, measure and mark its location on the vanity nailer, and drill a pilot hole for the 3″ screw that will hold it in place.

Finally, Installing the New Vanity

Minimize the chance for damage (and make the vanity lighter and easier to move) by taking out any drawers and removing the doors.

Protect your floors and move the vanity into position, then slide it into place with the water and drain pipes coming through the holes you cut in the back. Check that the cabinet is level (both side to side and front to back), and use shims to level it if necessary. Once the vanity is level, attach it to the wall using 3″ screws.

Installing the Top and Sink

If your new vanity has a built in or molded sink, you will need to install the faucet before you put the top in place. Start by putting the faucet through the precut holes and hand tighten them. Now turn the vanity top over and use a wrench to firm them up. Attach flexible water supply lines to the base of the faucet and the tail pipe to the sink drain. Finally spread a bead of silicone caulk all around the edge of the countertop, then turn it over and position it on the vanity with the backsplash tight against the wall.

If you’re putting a separate sink into your new vanity, you will need to install the countertop first, then install the faucets to the sink, and finally put the sink into the countertop.

Final Steps

Attach the flexible feed lines to the water supply valves and connect the sink tailpiece to the trap and drain. Run a small bead of caulk around the base of the faucet and where the vanity top butts against the backsplash, and then install moldings around the base of the vanity. Finally, turn the water back on and check for any leaks.

Then you can tile the deck (to match your bathroom tile) set the vanities back on top.
