Interior Decorating – DIY Beginner Basics

Decorating a space is a personal and sometimes painstaking endeavor. For the novice who decides to plunge ahead with a DIY project, there are many cable television shows that cater to every area of decorating and design that can offer helpful and insightful tips. But, what about the neophyte who wants to attempt decorating a space in their home for the very first time and require more guidance than an HGTV cable show can offer? For them, decorating can be a daring and daunting undertaking. Often, the most intimidating part of decorating for a beginner is choosing a paint color. Just imagine how overwhelming it must be to venture into a paint store and see hundreds of colors available (with the most creative names, I might add). Sure, the pros make decorating look easy; and to a pro it is. But for the amateur who desires a personal blueprint of sorts to get them started, there are basic tips that can be followed to point them in the right direction. Following is a brief overview of basic key areas to consider when attempting a DIY interior decorating project for the first time.

Determine the style for the space:
Resist the urge to jump right in. Begin by asking yourself a few questions about the space.

What will I do in the space?
How do I want to feel in the space?
Who else will use the space on a regular basis?

If necessary, ask other members of the family the same questions. The answers to these queries will help to decide if the space is to be decorated formally or casually, for instance. Of course, there are other styles to be considered. The style chosen will determine many of the subsequent decisions such as the type of furniture placed in the room, the fabric chosen, as well as the type of window treatment that is installed, to name a few.

For example, the casual style typically has simple details, textured elements and lots of horizontal lines. The furniture tends to be large in scale and upholstered or slip covered. Whereas the formal style is inspired by period homes with elaborate architectural features and special attention is placed on symmetry and lines.

Choose the colors for your space :
As previously stated, this can be a great source of angst for the DIY decorator. Color has the ability to evoke emotional responses in people so consider the style and mood of the room and choose the color accordingly. For instance, red is a stimulating color well suited for family rooms. Green, on the other hand, is a calming color that would be a good choice for a space dedicated to relaxing. Because there are countless colors to choose from it is helpful to utilize what professional decorators call the rule of three. That is, use only three colors, excluding neutrals, in their various values, intensities, and textures to avoid a space that is overwhelming with too many colors that may or may not be complimentary.

Generally, the stronger or primary color is used for the accessories or perhaps an accent wall. Once a few colors are identified, preview them on small, inconspicuous parts of a wall so it can be observed in all types of lighting. Lighting will change how the color appears. Also, remember that paint always dries darker and seems more intense when an entire wall is painted as opposed to a small test area.

Pay attention to the paint finish. The shinier the finish, the easier it will be to clean. These high gloss finishes are perfect for high traffic areas like baths and kitchens. Good sources of inspiration for a color scheme are an area rug, fabric, or art piece to be used in the space. Select three colors from your inspiration piece and use them in the space.

Choose fabrics carefully:
The style you choose to decorate in and the purpose of the space will strongly dictate the kind of fabrics you choose. For instance, if you are decorating a family room that has a southern exposure in the casual style, fabrics that do not stand up to constant use (perhaps by children and pets) would not be a good choice. Additionally, a space that receives a great deal of sunlight would make using silks and other delicate fabrics prone to fade not cost effective options.

Be budget minded:
No matter which style you choose, always shop within your means. If you have to choose between an expensive piece of art and an economical sofa for the living room, purchase a really good sofa first. The sofa will need to withstand years of use. It would be wise to invest the larger part of your budget on a soundly constructed sofa that will end up saving you money in the long run. It is far easier to obtain budget friendly accent pieces that are aesthetically pleasing to balance out your décor. In time, those accent pieces can be replaced with more expensive ones, if necessary.

Choosing wall art:
Be creative when it comes to adorning your walls. Think outside of the box and consider a wrought iron sculptured piece or a wall vase with quality faux flowers cascading down. If you are putting together a gallery of photos, use the same color or metal finish frames as not to detract from the subject matter. Remember to measure twice to avoid turning your newly painted walls into Swiss cheese. Whatever you hang, the center of it should be between 62 – 65 inches from the floor.

There are a myriad of other factors to consider during the decorating process, such as implementing the elements of design, balance, harmony. The finished product should be both stylish and functional. Many of my fellow decorators enjoy consulting on DIY projects. I also enjoy assisting someone in the creating of their space. The bond that is established with a DIY client is as strong as when I take on a project on my own with little to no input from the client. It is rewarding to see the look of satisfaction on the face of someone who has embarked upon a DIY project and emerged on the other side with a space they can be proud to have decorated themselves. While it may be less stressful to hire a professional interior decorator, it is can be very gratifying to do it yourself. For those who feel up to the challenge, these basic guidelines will help immensely.

Truthfully, you probably don’t have much to worry about. There aren’t many mattress-transmitted diseases.
If there is an odor that passes through normal sheets, or if you just want to feel cleaner, let the mattress air out outdoors on a sunny day. The UV light from the sun and the fresh breeze go a long way. Lysol is a cheap disinfectant that kills most germs and deodorizes. Finally, Walmart or Target sell “waterproof” matress covers that will put a barrier between you and the mattress. All of these solutions are free to cheap.
If that’s not enough, you can also buy a dust mite mattress cover that completely encloses the mattress and seals in any dustmites or insects, away from you.

The difference in these 2 Mattresses is the amount of Foam in each one.

The Somerset only has 1.57″ of latex and then uses Memory foam with it.

Couldn’t find the specifics on the Pure escape, but it most likely has 3″+ of Latex for that kind of price.

Anything less than 2″ of latex is not a real good quality Latex mattress

Firstly, astronauts DO strap themselves in when they sleep, or else they would float around the cabin.

Secondly, although memory foam was originally developed for the space program, it was not for use as a mattress for sleeping but as a cushioning material for the crew seats to reduce G-loads during take-off and re-entry. Ultimately it was never used.

So no, we’re not being lied to, you’re not on to something. You’ve simply misunderstood what the ‘developed by NASA’ claim actuslly means.

We have a water bed and use regular sheets. Buy the flat kind. We use a queen sized flat for the bottom sheet and often go with king size for the top sheet and quilt or bedspread just because they are bigger and will hang over more. The larger top sheet and cover helps stop the middle of the night tug of war that happens when one person ends up with no covers.

It involves a bit of tucking to get the bottom sheet tight. Allow a good 6″ at the top to tuck down in along the mattress. The top is more likely to come un tucked than the bottom. 1) make a drawing with exact dimensions, use existing things to base your design like existing drawers, twin bed size, etc.
2) make a list of materials based on your drawings. remember to make the plans as accurate as you can and expend as much time as you can planning. It will be cheaper for you.
3) price all your materials and make sure it is more effective to build it and to buy it.
4) if you do not have any experience cutting lumber, you could take your dimension plans to a lumber yard or your hardware store and have all the parts pre-cut for you!
5) measure twice and cut once. same with drilling and nailing.

You might try using non-fitted king sheets, but I do have deep pocket sheets and they work fine. I found them at a local discount linens store.

Just as with fitted sheets for a traditional mattress, a properly fitted sheet for your waterbed can make a big difference. A waterbed sheet that does not fit well can be prone to several problems that will make you feel that the money you just laid out for that new set of sheets was not very well spent.

Now there is a big difference between waterbed sheets that are inexpensive and just plain cheap. Sheets that are just plain cheap are that way for several reasons. As with any consumer product, poorly made waterbed sheets are often made in a way that saves money for the manufacturer. Unfortunately any short term cost savings to the manufacturer can actually be more costly in the long run through lost sales.

Through some trial and error I discovered the pitfalls of buying cheap sheets. If the set of waterbed sheets you buy does not properly fit the mattress, you are more likely to see some problems. Some cheap waterbed sheets will be made with just a little less fabric in order to save money. The corner pockets may not be deep enough or have enough elastic material to fit securely on and under the mattress. Waking up to find that the mattress has slipped off the corners can be more than a little annoying. The stitching may pull out in critical points.

Thread count is a very important determinant of the price of waterbed sheets. The size of the sheets you need is the other. Thread count is the measure of the number of threads per square inch of fabric. There is a big difference between 200 thread count fabric and 400 thread count material. The amount of material needed to make waterbed bedding set for a California king sized waterbed is almost twice that needed for a full sized waterbed.

Higher thread count sheets will feel thicker and tend to hold their shape longer. The tougher fabric holds the stitching more securely and I think they look better coming out of the laundry than less expensive sheets. One hundred percent cotton is still my fabric of choice with a thread count of at least 400. Cotton blend fabric, made from some combination of cotton and a synthetic thread like polyester can provide you with excellent durability and are a good value.

I suggest trying local overstock store (TJ MAXX, Ross, Tuesday Morning, Marshalls) if you have them. Sometimes the sheets are irregular, but I found perfect white 600 thread count Egyptian Cotton sheets for under $40 for the whole set.

I have friends who had the same problem, they were able to fit the king sized mattress up the stairs by folding it around corners but for the box springs the stores sell them in 2 pieces so you can get them up the stairs.

My freind was in the same position but because he had an almost antique bed… The other night, I slept at his place and he had bought a memory foam mattress pad. The difference was unbelievable… but true! So, I have this supposedly really great mattress… It should be, it cost an arm and a leg. But for 3 years now (and I’ve only had it for 5 yrs), every morning when I woke up, I had lower back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain. In fact, throughout the night, there was always my subconcious knowing that I wasn’t sleeping well and the discomfort would penetrate my sleep, robbing me of a good night’s sleep.

So I went out last night and bought the same memory foam mattress pad as my friend. I’m now a FIRM believer! I slept thru the whole night, without feeling any pain anywhere, and when the alarm went off this morning, I had no pain anywhere. No kidding! Get yourself one of these… and if your mattress is sagging like a hammock, then do like someone else already said, and put a piece of plywood underneath to stop that. Then put the memory foam on top. You will be amazed!

Oh… almost forgot: We both bought the mattress memory pad at WalMart. It’s 109$ Canadian (so less in US) for a queen size. I’m not sure if I remember correctly, but it seems to me I remember seeing 49$ +/- for a twin bed size. It comes in a box and is with the mattress pads in the linen section.

Oh.. one last thing: my oldest daughter is going off to college in the fall, in a dorm room just like you’re about to do. She lay down on my bed lastnight after I had made the bed with the memory foam pad and she loved it… enough to ask us for one for her dorm room. I swear…one VERY LAST THING… My youngest daughter, who is 13 going on 14 tried it too… and said she was sleeping with me. Her father could go sleep in her bed! She wants one too.

The site you gave didn’t work. Put a neutral color like taupe, gray, etc. on the walls (check paint swatches). A neutral lamp shade and go to the craft section of walmart and get the beads on the ribbon and hot glue the beads (color of choice) on the lamp shade. Back to your wall, you could do some stripes at the head of the bed. Your bedding, if it’s a striped/ print comforter, find two or three colors to interchange for your sheets and the same with pillows and a blanket throw. Curtains can be a print or a solid (like three panel of the colors you like). If the curtains are going to be too expensive and you have blinds or a shade on the window, use some flat sheets for the curtains. Okay I’m just gonna put this idea out there. You should get a white ruffled bed comforter, yellow bed skirt, white headboard, purple bed blanket, white pillows, maybe a light yellow settee, on the settee you should put on it a lavender and light yellow striped pillow, a floral rug that coordinated with some of these color.
Also a vintage clock or vase somewhere in the room for nice accents and appeal
and lastly over the bed you should put a white mosquito net.
I think all of this would make a lovely sophisticated French-colonial styled room.

One of the most effective formulas I´ve found for removing ANY odor was from Popular Science Magazine.
Mix 1 quart of Hydrogen Peroxide, with 1/4 cup of Baking Soda, and one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap. Saturate the affected area, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and the smell is gone. This is non-toxic and safe for your animals and children, and those with allergies. This is especially helpful for removing skunk odor from your outdoor animals.
As always, test a small portion of fabric for color fastness, before treating a large area.

There are many home remedies for treating pet stains and odors, and let me stress that most of them are not too bad as far as removing odors for humans´ noses.
Vinegar, amonia, baking soda, laundry detergents, lemon juice, fabric softeners, and commercial strength pet stain removers are all great for removing the odors that humans can smell.
HOWEVER; you will need more to remove the odor for your cat´s nose. An enzymatic cleaner is the best answer, but it is slow and may take more than one application. (Nature´s Miracle is one of them.)
The Hydrogen Peroxide/Baking Soda combo is fast, but can alter the colors of some fabrics.
In the end, you must decide which application is best for your situation.

To remove the smell of urine from just about anything, first clean it with some sort of soap or kitchen cleaner. Then clean it with lemon juice. If you dont like the smell of lemon juice follow it up with a little bit of vanilla extract.

Check your measurements to be sure that the ruffle reaches the floor. Daybeds are usually higher than ‘regular’ beds because they frequently have trundle/ roll-out beds underneath. Alternately, put the ruffle on the trundle, and allow the comforter/ bedspread on the top matteress hang far enough to provide coverage.

The best way to visualize the size is this. Put together side by side two twin beds. That is how wide a king size bed is. As for length, you would have to order the longer length variety, because most sheets and covers are designed to fit the regular length 72 inches. The width of a regular twin is 46 inches.

Comforter/Comforter cover = the heavy cover (duvet) that goes on the very top of your bed. The cover is what you would put over the plain comforter if you bought it unfinished from a store.

Shams = the decorative pillow cases (usually the ones with the frilled edging) that go over your decorative pillows. In other words you have 2 pillows (for a double bed) that you use for sleeping on and an additional 2 pillows that you would put the “shams” on for decorative purposes when your bed is made.

I don’t know of any sheets in between a full and queen size. The length of all beds is a standard size and is all the same. European beds have a slightly different length size but queen sheets generally fit well.
