In colonial times, candle making was an essential annual chore in all households. Home made taper candles were the only source of light for people’s homes, and there were no commercial candles available as there are today. Each household made its own candles, usually once a year. The average household needed around 400 candles a year, so this was a huge job.

Since the candles were made from tallow, or animal fat, this event usually coincided with the autumn slaughter of animals for meat. Tallow could be made from the fat of all farm animals, but that from sheep tallow was the most desirable. Pig tallow had a very bad smell, and was used by people who could not afford either beef or sheep tallow.

The earliest settlers made their candles by the dipping method. A wick of cotton was dipped repeatedly into the melted tallow, with time to cool and harden between dips. This made a taper candle. These home made candles did not burn very well, emitted odors, and the light was poor.

Those who could afford beeswax had candles from that wax. These were generally rolled from sheets of beeswax, and had a sweet honey smell. Beeswax was not very available, it was expensive, and only the very rich could afford to use candles made from it as a daily way of lighting their homes.

Some colonists found that they could make a wax from bayberries, which have a waxy coating. They boiled the berries, and the wax was skimmed from the top. This was a source of pleasant smelling wax, but there were some drawbacks. Huge numbers of berries were needed – about 15 pounds of bayberries were needed to make just one pound of bayberry wax! Since time was often at a premium for colonial women, this was not an efficient way to make candles. Also, the resulting candles were quite soft, and did not keep well in hot weather.

In the late 1700′s, whaling became an important industry in the Eastern part of America, and spermaceti (a waxy substance from the whale’s head) was found to make much better candles. This wax was harder than either tallow, beeswax or bayberry wax. The candles burned longer and brighter, and stood up to summer heat much better. They were quite expensive,

Around the same time, candle makers started to use wooden molds to make candles. This important innovation allowed candles to be made much faster, and the candles were uniformly shaped. Some candle makers would travel around, taking their molds and equipment, and making candles for people. Others set up a candle making business in one location, and sold their candles.

In the early 1800′s paraffin was first made from coal tar, and around 1850, it became commercially viable, when James Young filed a patent to produce it from coal, which was extensively mined in the eastern states. Paraffin was used to make candles of high quality, and along with the new machines that could make 1500 candles an hour, they became inexpensive and widely available.

Although they are no longer the major source of light for our homes, candles have grown in popularity and use in recent times. For many of us, candles are lit to mark celebrations; they symbolize romance, scented ones soothe our senses, and decorative candles accent our homes, where they cast a warm and mysterious glow for us to enjoy.

Winter may not be over yet, but why dwell on the cold outside, when you can get a jumpstart on spring inside your home.

While everyone talks about spring cleaning and redecorating, why should you wait until spring to start these indoor activities? Once spring arrives, it’s time to be outside, enjoying the warmer weather, not limit yourself to indoor activities. We say, get a jump on spring cleaning, and decorating, and be ready to welcome the season change in with open arms.

First things first, if you haven’t gotten rid of your holiday decorations, you’re way behind schedule. Box them up and get them out of the house! This would also be a good time for a little tidying up around your home. Go over your spring cleaning list and complete as many of the tasks as you can at this time.

Next, it’s time to decide how you are going to welcome spring. There are two ways to do this in your home – smells and sights. I recommend both.

What scents remind you of spring? It could be the fruit blossoms on the trees or blooming flowers. Maybe it’s the scent of the sea breeze, as the beach once again becomes a tempting site. Whatever scent is the best for you, you can likely find a scented jar candle to bring that scent to life in your home. You may even want to purchase a variety of them, so you can change the scents to suit your whims. In this respect, you can have it all.

The reason scented jar candles are so great is that they can be moved from space to space in the home, easily. There’s no dripping or spilling, they are perfectly self-contained candles, brimming with lovely smells. This means you can take that spring scent with you whether you are in the bedroom reading a book, in the living room thinking of the flowers you will be planting when the last cold moves out or in your breakfast nook enjoying a cup of tea. Another great thing about jar candles is that after the candle is gone, you will have a perfectly nice jar to use for other purposes. Once you burn through a few jar candles, you will have a beautiful set of matching jars that can be used for holding various odds and ends. You can even decorate them to make them personal.

Next come the sights of the room. This can work right along with those scented jar candles you just bought. It’s time to put some springtime colors to work in the house. Take a note of the colors of your home, and what will go well with it. If you already have a theme that includes certain kinds of flowers, take note of those too. Also, look at the color of the jar candles you have purchased.

These colors, and complementary ones, are going to be the colors you want to use to accent your home for springtime. It could be in the form of arrangements of fake flowers (or real ones if you can find them), new throw pillows that add a little bit if brightness or maybe even a new tablecloth that has a spring look, to put on one of your tables.

If you want to combine the sights and scents, you can even keep your eyes open for a floral ring of fake flowers. These are usually available at craft stores and are literally a ring of fake flowers on a circular base, with an open center. If you measure the base of your scented jar candles, you can find one with an opening that your candle will fit snugly in, looking like it’s surrounded by the same flowers that are giving off the scent, once it’s lit.

A beach wedding creates the opportunity to give your guests a unique and special wedding favor to take home. Not only do they get to enjoy a day at the beach as you share your nuptials with them, but they can take home a little piece of this paradise with your favor. Stick-on hook for hanging small glass candleholder from a beam in the ceiling?

I want to hang these glass candleholders from a beam on the ceiling, but the beam is made of concrete. So I need to use a stick-on hook…anyone can recommend a hook to use ? And, how to attach the candle holder to the hook? Is fish string or wire better?

Seeing that you are planning on gluing to concrete you may have to use an epoxy for adhesion. I would not use fish line due to the candle heat. a very thin wire would be safer

I’ve been thinking about the placement of wall candle holders for some time now. There are so many applications for these beautiful candle holding wall sconces. With the addition of these wall candles, to places on your walls that already have some form of art or decoration, you can enhance the beauty of each and every room in your home or office. So join me in exploring all the possible applications these wall candles have in order to turn ordinary rooms into magnificent surroundings.

I will start out by asking you if you have any wall mirrors in your home other than in your bathroom? By placing a wall candle holder on each side of your wall mirror, you add a classic touch of beauty that was not there before.

If you have some walls in your home that are small, you can add one or two wall candle holders to these depending on the size of the wall sconce you wish to use. An example of this is the small section of wall I have between my living room and dining room. On this wall I have applied 2 medium size wrought iron candle holders that are each capable of holding one pillar candle 3 inches in diameter. I have the candle holder on the left about 5 inches higher on the wall than the candle holder on the right. This adds an artful appearance to a wall that would normally be left empty.

I have a fireplace in my living room. My fireplace is built into the wall. Above the fireplace is a mantle. Above the mantle is a normal painted wall. On the wall above the fireplace is a framed art print. I chose to put up a wall candle holder on each side of this framed art print. If you choose to put up wall candle holders along the sides of framed art, be sure to match both the theme of the artwork and the style of the frame. If you do this you will be most pleased with the results.

We all know that wall candle holders go quite well in hallways. Did you know that if you have a second floor stairway with a wall on one or both sides of the stairway, these wall sconces, in the proper style or theme of your home décor, are to die for! Talk about beautiful…

Now let me talk about candle holder wall sconces and bedroom décor. One of the most beautiful bedroom decorations I ever put my eyes across was at the home of one of my friends. In the master bedroom was dark oak bedroom furniture. The headboard of the bed (King size) was also beautifully carved dark oak. The headboard was up against the middle of the wall on one side of the room. Above the headboard was a beautiful contemporary tapestry (about 5′ tall by 7′ long) hanging on the wall. On each side of the tapestry was a wall sconce candle holder. These wall candle holders had to be 24 inches tall, made out of brushed pewter. The pewter candle holders matched the rod that held the tapestry on the wall. I’m telling you this looked stunning!

When it comes to tapestries, no matter what the size, if there is room for a wall candle holder on each side, then put them there. It just adds a touch of magic to the room décor.

From wall mirrors to small walls, from framed art to hallways, from stairways to tapestries and by now I’m sure you have some ideas of your own, you can’t go wrong by adding some of these flickering works of art. All you have to do now is explore the possibilities…

Hanging a Wall Candle Holder!!!! Help!?

I bought two wall mounted candleholders and they didn’t come with any hooks. I don’t know what to hang them with. They seem to be to thick for picture frame hooks and where I want to hang them there is no wall stud. They are heavy. Any advice please thanks!

GO to home depot and get a couple of toggle bolt wall anchors- then you just drill a hole, install the anchors, then you can hang your candle holders!

Decorated with bows and flowers, fragranced pillar candles are easy to coordinate with any décor because they come in all sizes and colors. When you look at the choice of scents you can have in fragranced pillar candles, you can have a different scent in your home for every season of the year or for different occasions. Of course you can also have non-fragranced candles if you just want to have the colored candles or you can even go with plain white candles.

Fragranced jar candles are also perfect for any occasion. When you want to put out the flame you just have to replace the top of the jar. I prefer Real Essence by White Barn, I think they have more fragrance. They will burn pretty evenly too.

Recently, I visited a large craft and hobby store, hoping to find some great new colors to add to my stamp pad collection. It wasn’t too long after I began stamping that I realized how difficult it was to find great stamp pads, in a large array of coordinated colors, within my local area’s offering of craft and hobby shops. Boy was I surprised at how poor the selection was when I did decide to wander out to look for stamp pads. You can put down a wick, like other candles. Then pour these beads in the container and light the waxed wick. It will start to melt the beads. If yours are painted, you might not want to do this, as paint will not burn as well as the wax does. In fact, the paint will not burn well at all, but will smoke.

This is really a neat thing to do if you are having a patio party. The cans really look great if you hang them all around your patio and they pull a double duty if you burn citronella candles in the lanterns.

To complete this project, you will need:

-Clean can with label removed

-Old towel

-Hammer

-Large nail

-Galvanized wire

-Pliers

Steps to Make Lanterns:

1. First get the label off the can by soaking in hot sudsy water. Then fill the can full of water and place in your freezer until the water has frozen solid, usually overnight. Then in the morning, place an old towel on a firm counter surface. Lay the tin can (which is now full of solid ice) on its side on the towel.

2. Determine, either in your mind or mark on the can, the design you want to place on the can. You don’t have to get fancy, you can put simple shapes such as crosses and spirals. The important thing is that you have holes all the way around the can. As you do this, hold the point of the nail vertically on the can and hammer with several hard hits. The ice will support the sides of the can and prevent them from bending and you should be able to make a clean hole. Continue making holes in the can until you have rotated all the way around it. While you are doing the holes, make sure you make three holes along the top of the can, preferably evenly spaced. These are the holes you will use to secure your wire hanger.

3. When you’re finished making your design on the can, let the can thaw. To make the hanger, cut three lengths of wire, each at least 12 inches long. Push one end of the wire through a hole in the top of the can, bend the end back up and twist the wire around itself to secure it. Do this with all three wires.

4. Gather the loose ends of all 3 wires together at the top and twist them together, then bend the twisted trio into a large hook so it looks like the top of a wire hanger. Then secure your candle in the can. You can use a match to heat the base of the candle so that it just barely starts to melt then press it into the bottom of the can so that it will stick. Or, if you have a hot glue gun, you can glue the candle in. Another option is to put sand in the bottom of the can and let that support your candle.

The can will work well as a nice lantern. If you want, you can always paint the can, but that won’t affect the lantern effect. When the candle is lit, the nail holes shine out like stars and a glow emerges from the top of the can. The cans look beautiful hanging in trees around the garden on a summers night. The can protects the candle from the wind and the candles will burn for hours.

How do you get wax off of a candle holder?

I have these black pillar looking candle holders that wax has dripped down on to, and I want to get all the wax off so I can use them for decor because they are pretty, how do i get all of it off?

1. Lay several layers of wet newspaper on a cookie sheet.
2. Lay the candle holder on the newspaper.
3. Bake in an oven, preferably a convection oven for 8-10 minutes at 400 degrees.
4. Remove cookie sheet from oven and pick up candle holder with a hot pad. Wax will already have been absorbed by the newspaper.
5. If the item is likely to be damaged by heat you can soften the wax with a hair dryer.

Another option is to freeze the candle holders, the wax then comes off easily.

Bill Farley is a well known name in industrial circles. He is the chairman and owner of Farley Industries located in Chicago, Illinois. An avid follower of fitness he has several leading brands to his credit such as the likes of Munsingwear, BVD and the very popular Fruit of the Loom.

His humble beginnings

Bill Farley was born in the town of Pawtucket in Rhode Island. His mother was a factory worker and his father worked as a musician and a mailman. In his early days of struggle, Bill Farley used to earn his living by delivering Sunday newspapers. Later on he switched jobs to work for a toy manufacturer and later as a lifeguard. Farley did his schooling from the Bowdoin College. A proficient scholar as well as an athlete, Farley graduated from college in 1964 with a degree in government. He decided to try his luck in the world by traveling in the United States.

From rags to riches

Like many clichés even this one seems to hold true for Bill Farley – the man literally made it from rags to riches. There used to be a time when he didn’t have enough money to eat. At such times he would earn his living by selling encyclopedias from door to door in Los Angeles. This ad-hoc training in door-to-door selling helped him become a leading sales manager and trainer as time went by. He decided that education would play a key role in shaping his career growth. That’s why in 1966 Bill Farley enrolled in law school at Boston College. He graduated three years later with a J.D. degree. Soon he went on to join the famous NL industries in New York and started working in their mergers and acquisitions department. It was after quite a few years that he was sent to Chicago on transfer for the post of regional manager in charge of NL’s metals division. After having worked with NL industries for a good 6 years, he shifted to Lehman Brothers in 1972, as an associate in corporate finance.

The acquisitions that followed

Bill Farley bought his first ever company – Anaheim Citrus Products in the year 1976 – just 4 years after joining Lehman Brothers. It was during the same year that Farley became a partial owner of the famous Chicago White Sox. Then a year later he acquired Baumfolder, which happened to be a subsidiary of Bell & Howell. During a time span of five years – from 1980 to 1985, Bill Farley managed a series of acquisitions – from companies such as Coal Creek Mining Company, Health Foods, Inc., The NL IndustriesÂ’ Metals Group, and Northwest Industries (which included Fruit of the Loom). His companies were at an all time high during the 1990s – during that time his companies employed more than 50000 people and had a turnover of over 4 billion USD.

The way things stand today

Today Farley has an impressive empire to his credit. He is the proud owner of Farley industries (FI), as well as the CEO of Body Wise International located in Tustin California. Body Wise is a leading marketer of nutritional supplements. Farley incidentally is also the CEO of Unity Group LLC located in Washington D.C. which is a private security force and defense contractor that operates in high risk zones like Indonesia, Iraq and Sudan etc.

His beliefs

Bill Farley has always believed in taking risks. His famous quote says “A willingness to take risk is probably a major reason for my success today. Is this a good list of candle scents? Best to worst?

I’m planning on making some candles- is this a good list of scent oils to buy? What’s missing? What should I get rid of? I want to have scents that are popular and will sell.

I personally like:
Lilac, French Vanilla, Lavender, White tea/ginger, clean cotton, and citrus or coconut scents. The rest I don’t think I’ve ever had the chance to smell…
Some other cool scents are cinnamon apple, berry scents and things that smell like fresh baked pies.

The best solution is just to be honest. Go thank your boss verbally for coming and admit that there was some mix-up with some of the gifts not having labels. So far, we have $ 0.625 (62 1/2 cents) in each candle.

Now, for the wicks and scents, how many candles can you make with the $15 of wicks and scents?
You’ll need to find out your unit cost for each wick and each scent, then add it to the $ 0.625 to get the cost of one candle.

Once you have your production cost of materials, decide how much your time on each candle is worth, and add that in. Keep in mind, you also have heat costs, etc.

It sounds like this is a hobby and you’re enjoying it, so don’t get too stressed out about crunching the numbers.
Just watch; if you make a lot of money (several thousands of dollars profit) at this, the IRS will want its share.

The holidays are full of festivity and fun. Here are some fast and free household cleaning tips.

Cleaning a spill on the carpet

ItÂ’s inevitable. No matter how careful everyone tries to be, someone is going to spill some food or drink on your nice clean carpet. To keep the spill from doing damage try to dab it up as quickly as possible. Mix one tablespoon of mild liquid dishwashing detergent in 1/2 cup of warm water (note: you can also use 1/2 cup of white vinegar). Grab two clean white towels. Use one to dab at the stain with the solution, and the other to alternately blot the area to soak up the spill.

Keep frost away from windows

If you live in a cold weather area, itÂ’s nice to be able to look outside and see the pretty winter snow and holiday decorations. If your home windows fog up in cold weather, thereÂ’s a solution. Wipe windows with a solution of 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol (or antifreeze) per 1 quart of water. Another tip is to moisten a cloth with glycerin and wipe the insides of the windows.

Cleaning your precious knickknacks

If you have a great collection of knickknacks that you love to display, but hate to clean, hereÂ’s some good news: thereÂ’s a quick and easy way to clean your figurines. Simply place your knickknacks inside the kitchen sink and spray them with window cleaner. Move them to a paper towel to air dry. This works for glass, china, and glazed figurines.

Cleaning candle wax drippings

Candlesticks – to clean hardened wax off of candlesticks, place the candlesticks inside the freezer for an hour or more. Remove candlesticks and the frozen wax should easily peel off. Wash and dry candlesticks. If you’re pressed for time, run the candlesticks under very hot water, cover your hand with a soft towel and gently push hot wax off the candlestick.

Tablecloth – to remove still warm candle wax from a tablecloth, rub the wax with an ice cube to harden it, then scrape the wax off with a spatula. Place a paper towel over and underneath the remaining wax. Press wax area with a warm iron. Keep changing paper towels until all remaining wax is absorbed. Sponge off the remaining residue with dry cleaning solvent. Rub the area gently with heavy duty liquid detergent. Put tablecloth through the washing machine as soon as possible.

Fireplace cleaning

To prevent lots of ash dust from spreading around the room when you clean out your fireplace, sprinkle damp tea leaves onto the ash first.

If you have a slate hearth, you can make it a glossy showpiece by washing it every six weeks, letting it dry, and wiping it down with lemon oil.

Wash brass fireplace tools in warm sudsy water.

Clean sticky fireplace tools with a cloth moistened with kerosene. Let tools completely dry before using again.

Quick clothing stain removal

DonÂ’t panic when you spill something on your clothes. Pour a glass of club soda. Dip a clean white cloth or handkerchief into the club soda and sponge off the stain.

Cleaning up after a big party

Step 1: gather up all the cups, bottles and glasses. Empty any partially-filled containers into the kitchen sink. Look around for spills and clean them up immediately.

Step 2: Fill kitchen sink with soapy water and soak dishes and utensils. If you have a dishwasher, run your first load of dishes.

Step 3: Grab a large garbage bag and begin picking up party garbage in the outer rooms, work your way towards the kitchen.

Step 4: Dust furniture and clean floors and rugs. Work your way towards the kitchen.

Step 5: Clean kitchen. Take out garbage bags.

How can I remove candle wax from our clogged toilet?

My wife dumped I would say a little over a cup of melted candle wax down our toilet and flushed it away. No surprise, it now is clogged up badly. It can barely take liquids at all, even a piece of toilet paper is enough to cause it not to get rid of all the water.

My brother Norm has been living with a brain aneurysm for years — and I mean LIVING! Nine years ago he was wracked with an excruciating headache. The doctors discovered that it was from a leaking aneurysm, and rushed him into surgery. After a 7-hour brain surgery, they determined that his aneurysm was inoperable. When he realized that he could die any day, he chose to LIVE every day — he followed his bliss, buying a sailboat and sailing to the Caribbean where he is having wonderful adventures in paradise. He stopped thinking about the aneurysm and lived as if it was gone. A few weeks ago he had an MRI, which showed that the aneurysm has completely calcified and there is no longer a threat of it rupturing! He considers this a personal miracle.

What I see is that he had a powerful intention to live as if he were whole and healed. The seed of intention that is well tended and nourished can flower into coincidences, synchronicities and miracles that heal the body, boggle the mind, and lift the spirit. I’ve created an acronym for the word miracle:

My Intention Radiates Apparently Coincidental Luminous Events

When these “coincidental” luminous events happen to me and the people in my life, it reminds me that there’s more going on than meets the eye, there is an unseen energy that responds to our deepest and most focused desires. Einstein said, “Coincidences are God’s way of remaining anonymous.” For me, they are God’s way of saying, “You are not alone.”

Prayer is another form of intention that reveals our interconnectedness with the powerful forces of the Universe. In my early twenties I was feeling deeply depressed and asked for a sign from God that life was worth living. Just then there was a sound of movement in the room. I looked in the direction of the sound and saw that a tall, thin candle in a wrought iron candle holder on the wall had fallen to one side, pointing to the calligraphed poster next to it that read: GET THY SELF TOGETHER. I smiled to myself and thought, “Is that you God?” The next day as I was writing about it in my journal it happened again! It excited me and made me want to stick around, to live, play and explore in this magical energy field of life.

Another time, several years ago, I was having another “dark night of the soul”, feeling deep despair and praying for guidance. As I was crying and journaling about it, a card that was displayed on the bookshelf beside me fell to the floor. I picked it up and it had a beautiful flower on the cover with the words, “You are so loved.”

I love how, when we’re open to it, just the right words, experiences, and people that we need fall into our life. It is a wonderful synchronicity that my brother has recently shared his healing miracle with me; it inspires me to let go of thoughts of the cancer I recently experienced (knowing that I have made all the healthy life changes I could) and continue to focus on seeing myself whole, healed, and connected to the miraculous forces of the Universe. That’s the image and feeling I want to cultivate, nourish and nurture — that’s the intention I want to radiate out into the Universe.

I believe that the deepest intention of our soul is to be vibrantly present, whole and alive. I have experienced that seeming adversities such as aneurysms, depression and cancer can be valuable and necessary stimulants in bringing about that intention, resulting in the miracle of our full participation and appreciation of life and living our wildest dreams.

Many people often think about making their own candles. The question is which candle ingredients are the best for your new candle making craft?

Making candles is fun and rewarding if you can make your candles out of good ingredients even if you’re on a shoe string budget. This way you can start your new hobby and save money as well.

The best candle ingredients make the type of candles you would already buy. Do you like white candles with your bath or rose floating candles that sit harmoniously on your pond or pool?

Firstly, which candles are you really enthusiastic about? This is the best way to choose your ingredients. Do you like plain vanilla or mysterious purple candles? Pink floating candles or very large pillar candles?

For example I like white soy candles because they’re refreshing and the wax washes easily off your pouring pot or double boiler. They make a wonderful pillar candle or tapered candle which is perfect for creating a harmonious peaceful atmosphere after a tiring day at work.

Meal ideas for a large group?

I have to cook for 42 people and I am trying to think of some ideas as to what I should cook. I want it to be a nice meal in my home, with candles and wine. Now I just need to think of a main course. I am trying to think of something that would be somewhat cheap. IDEAS???
I have a very large kitchen and two dining rooms so I do have room for this. It doesn’t have to be so cheap where I end up cutting people from the dinner. To lighten the color you will have to remove any clear coat (varnish, poly, ect) then apply a wood bleach to lighten the color. The brightest color you can achieve will depend upon the type of wood.

You can then use a white wash or clear coat to keep it light. Sanding would be very hard and would remove some of the sharpness of the details in an item such as this. You can always paint the piece to get the same effect without chancing ruining the piece.

General Description: Achocha (Caigua) is a vine found in tropical South America. It can grow to 40 feet, with tendrils that provide opportunity for climbing. Other uses have also been documented among Peruvians.

Achocha is not grown commercially in the modern world, but seeds are generally available from heirloom or heritage seed suppliers. It is a tender plant, and seeds are sown at the same time as tomatoes or beans. Achocha is an easy and attractive plant to grow, providing food screening and an eye-catching attraction for gardens.

Uses: An easy plant to grow, achocha was one of the food plants of the Incas and provides plentiful edible fruits in late summer. It was one of the food crops grown by the Incas that never became popular in modern times. Achocha (Cyclanthera pedata) is not a true squash, but it belongs to the same family, Cucurbitaceae. This vine has been tested in cultivation outside the Americas and seems to have widespread promise.

The flowers are small, but loved by hoverflies (beneficial garden insects) and achocha produces a prolific harvest. It is prepared much like cucumbers and peppers; the fruit can be used small (1/2 inch) in salads or mature (1 inch, exploded) cooked. Some immature achochas look and taste like tiny cucumbers, a good substitute in many dishes. Filled with mincemeat or vegetables and baked, mature achochas make a tasty dish, not unlike stuffed peppers, with a flavor that has been likened to artichoke.

Achocha is increasingly popular and available in the modern world. It has found its way to the natural products market as a cholesterol management supplement for lowering blood pressure, and blood-sugar regulation. It is sold in tablets or capsules, as well as freeze-dried fruit juice.

I love candles and colors really don’t matter to me. It’s the scent that matters because when they’re lit, that’s what you’ll be smelling; not the color. I mean, there are probably some that don’t have scents, but I prefer them over any unscented colored ones. My favorite candles to make are gel kinds. I can show those off with seashells and items. I made them in votive sizes and they were for my daughter’s baby shower. They turned out awesome and everyone was surprised at how they professionally looked But I wouldn’t mind buying a Pink Cucumber Melon candle.. I love the smell of cucumber melon!

Beeswax candles have a fine traditional look to them and one that here in the United States is often associated with our Colonial period. Whether you want the texture of the honeycomb sheets or just the unique sweet scent of a beeswax candle when you light your room making your own beeswax candle is easy enough for the candle making hobbyist.

Beeswax can sometimes be found in stores but you might have to venture onto the internet to find it in quantities for your home candle making. You could also check with local beekeepers to see if they have wax available from their honey production. Generally speaking, beeswax can be found in natural and ivory, which has been filtered. Both will have the typical scents and characteristics associated with beeswax.

If you want to try your hand at making a candle the way the women of Colonial times would have done this, let’s get some equipment pulled together and get started. First we’ll need a tall metal container – like a coffee can – to melt our wax in. We’ll use this as the top or our double boiler. Next we’ll need a long uncoated wick and we’ll need a clip in the middle. We’ll use a clothespin so that we have something to hold onto. You can weight down the free ends of the wick with washers if you want to cut out some of the frustration from the initial dipping process.

Once the beeswax is melted carefully remove the coffee can from the heat and put it on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Hold your wick by the clip and dip it into the wax. Hold the wick in the wax until it stops bubbling. Now, pull it out of the wax and let the melted wax drip off. The rest of the dipping will just be in and out but you’ll want to wait briefly between each dip.

Stir the wax as you go so that the heat stays consistent and if it gets too cool you can put it back on the heat. Don’t let your candle cool too much but you can hang it up if you are making more than one candle at a time. If you need to straighten out your candle you can lightly roll it on a firm surface between dipping. Keep dipping until your candle is as thick as you want it to be then hang it by the clothespin and allow it to cool.

Once it’s cooled cut the wick apart and you’ll have two new candles made in an authentically Colonial tradition. Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before you burn the candle and then you’re ready.

And for an even easier beeswax candle you can buy sheets of beeswax honeycomb. They come in lots of colors which makes for a fun project. You’ll need a few items – the sheet of beeswax, a wick that is 2 inches longer than the sheet and a paring knife. Lay out the sheet of beeswax and center the wick along the bottom edge with at least ¾ of an inch hanging out on each end. Roll the beeswax over the wick and continue pressing down firmly so that the wax is tight around the wick. Now roll the beeswax gently and straight until you reach the other end of the sheet. Press the outside edge into the side of the candle. Pick which end you like best and make this the top. Trim the wick to ¼ inch. Cut the bottom wick flat to the base and now you have a beautiful rolled beeswax candle that looks like could grace the dining room of many a fine Colonial home.

How to remove candle wax from carpet?

Somehow molten candle wax got dropped in my carpet and its really hard now. How can i remove it without destroying my carpet?

The first thing you need to do is remove as much of the hardened wax as you can. A butter or putty knife works well for this but you can use anything with a dull blade. Scrape up what you can and vacuum the debris. Next place a clean cloth, paper bag or paper towel over the wax. Run a warm iron over the cloth until the wax melts. A hot hair dryer can also be used. Once the wax is melted, it should adhere to the cloth. Lift the cloth and the wax should lift with it.

It should be noted that if the wax is colored, it may stain your carpet. Anytime you apply heat to a stain, it causes the stain to lock into the fibers leaving you with a permanent reminder of your clumsiness. It’s for this reason you should use a warm iron only. You also don’t want to use newspaper or any kind of paper with words or pictures on it unless you want the image to be transferred to your carpet.

Beeswax candle making is one of the most enjoyable of the candle making projects that you could engage in. Beeswax is a soft wax that is wonderful for making both rolled candles and dipped candles. The wax comes in both block and sheet form and is easy to find at any craft store. The nice thing about the sheet beeswax is that it is idea for making candles with young toddlers, as there is no melting the hot wax.

Aside from the beeswax and the wick, there are no other supplies you need, with the exception of an old coffee can and a big pot to bowl water. You will also need a metal spoon for stirring and a candy thermometer. Gather up all your materials before you start.

How to make beeswax candles:

The first thing you need to do is measure the wick the length you would like each candle to be. Double the wick and include a few extra inches.

Place water in a large pot big enough to add the coffee can and place it on the stove to boil. The beeswax will come in a block. Break the block into smaller chucks and place the pieces into the coffee can. Once the water has boiled place the coffee can in the water and turn the heat to medium. Stir the wax constantly while it is melting.

Once the wax has melted take your wick and double it over your fingers. Take the wick and dip it into the melted beeswax. Dip quickly the first time. Raise the wick from the melted wax and allow a few minutes to dry. Then, dip again. Allow a few minutes to allow the candle to drip and cool and then dip for the last time. Hang the candles over a closet bar or place a dowel between two spaces to form an area for drying the candles.

Take the next wick, and dip in the same manner as the first set of candles. Hang this batch and dip another set. By the time you finish dipping all the beeswax sets that you intend to make, than take the very first set that you made and start the process over. You may decide to have different thickness.

After a few hours of cooling, you will have the enjoyment of beautiful beeswax candles, which will fill your home with a wonderful aroma! To store the beeswax candles, simply place the candles in a drawer and close the drawer! There are no special requirements, and they will have the contents in the drawer smelling wonderful.

Tips:

• Once the beeswax has melted, keep the wax on the lowest temperature on the stove as you will continue to work with it and need the wax to be soft.

• Also, place newspaper below the area that you will be hanging your candles from. This will help with cleanup.

• Always keep young children out of the area when working with the hot wax.

What would be the best way to package a yankee candle or candle crock pot for shipping?

I have shipped an entire household worth of breakable china, glass figures, etc. PLUS glass jar candles, cross-country on the Greyhound Bus! Believe you me, I have become an expert at shipping breakables without having them break.

Buy your Yankee or crockpot candle, and find an old clean BATH TOWEL you do not need anymore, or grab a pretty new one as an extra bonus gift for your friend. Fold the bath towel in half lengthwise, so it makes a long thin strip. Lay the candle down on one end of the towel, then roll it up so the the candle is deep inside the towel…when you’ve finished rolling it, seal the towel to itself with a strip of packing tape…it comes off quite easily…or use any other tape that will stick well and not leave residue on the towel.

Now…find yourself a box that has about 2″ to 3″ of space all the way around that towel/candle bundle…you likely are going to wind up with a box that has more room on two sides, less on the other two…make SURE that the two closest sides give you at LEAST 3″ leeway…then fill with tightly wadded newspaper and jam it in there GOOD and tight, so that the candle has NO wobble room at all. If you like, you could substitute packing peanuts, but still you will need to pack them in there real tight so the towel-candle unit cannot move.

Seal the box well with packaging/mailing tape, address your mailing labels, put them on, and with a WIDE TIPPED PERMANENT BLACK MARKER print “FRAGILE PLEASE HANDLE WITH EXTREME CARE” on every side of that box.

Now, take it to your post office, and when mailing it, INSURE IT for the cost of all the contents PLUS a few bucks (to cover the initial cost of mailing). You usually won’t need to cash in that insurance, because your item SHOULD arrive unbroken and totally safe. I did not have ANY breakage in my stuff when I packed it this way. My grandmother and mom taught me to pack glass in towels like that. Works every time for me.

The only way it might (and not even then for sure) break the glass is if the flame is hitting directly on the glass. Hot wax will have no effect at all. The glass will get warm to the touch from the radiant heat, but it is even all over so no great stress on the glass which is what causes cracks. Don’t dump the hot glass into cold water if you think you have a reason to. An oil candle, where the wick floats or sits in a pool of liquid oil can get hotter. I have not heard of a wax candle in a glass getting hot enough to melt into a TV.

a good terry cloth towel fell into a melted candle on a warmer. how do u get the wax out of the towel?

had a parfait cup with two tea candles melted in it in the bathroom. someone threw the good hand towel into the wax and it soaked up most of the wax. any ideas on how to remove the wax and save the towel? do not want to run through wash like it is, may transfer onto other garments and machines.

First, decide if the towel really is worth the trouble. Freeze the towel, and definitely get as much of the cold wax out as possible. Work it out, picking at it gently, so you don’t damage the towel, scrubbing the towel against itself, etc. The next step is to iron it on warm, not hot, between layers of paper towels until you’ve gotten all you can out that way. Products like Goof-Off are supposed to work on wax, but I’ve never used it for that, so I can’t tell you from experience. Wash in the sink by itself in hot water, then the washer with other towels. Launder, hope, and pray. Best I’ve got.

Chandeliers have adorned the halls, churches and abbeys as far back as the medieval times. In these early days, they were candle chandeliers made as a wooden cross and each section had candles secured to them. They were hoisted by a rope and pulley system to a height to provide enough light and tied off in order to prevent it from falling. These candle chandeliers were one of the earliest means of providing light to a dark room.

Later a more complex form of the candle chandelier began to evolve in the form of a ring or even a crown. These designs began to become popular as a decorative piece and often were found in prestigious places such as palaces and the homes of the extravagant and wealthy. As the early forms of these candle chandeliers became popular they took on a “status symbol” of the rich. They continued to grow in popularity and by the early 18th century they were being made from ornate brass cast with various forms and curved arms in order to hold lots of candles. These candle chandeliers then found their way into the homes of many merchants.

As glassmaking evolved the candle chandeliers were adorned with the lead crystals that scattered the light the thus the crystal chandelier began taking on the more popular choice.

Balloon Candle Making Recipes

This recipe will help assist in creating one of the simplest candles there is available. 3 items are all that is needed to make this balloon candle!

The steps are straightforward and uncomplicated:

• Fill balloon with water (you heard right – water)

• Secure top of balloon

• Melt wax in double-boiler, electric skillet or sauce pan (be sure skillet or sauce pan is an old one)

• Keep temp somewhere near 165 to185 until wax is fully melted

• Let cool until almost firm

• Dunk water balloon into wax, pulling out quickly, letting layer of wax cool and set

• Repeat dipping and cooling process until you have approximately 1 cm thick of wax surrounding the balloon.

• Pop balloon and remove from center of candle

• Pour warm wax slowly inside your balloon shell candle, rolling wax constantly until the interior is full.

• On the last pour, position wick in center first, allowing the final warm wax to surround it.

• Wait for the wax to cool to support wick before you release it.

Beeswax Candle Making Recipes

• Gently spool the edge of beeswax around the cotton wick sealing it into place. The heat of your hands will soften the wax enough to assist in seaming the wax candle

• Follow through by rolling candle wax slowly, all the while being sure it is straight and tight

• Upon reaching the end of your wax sheet, the heat of your fingertips will be able to meld the edge to your wax candle

• Snip the cotton wick flush at the base, while cutting the wick on top part of the candle to about 1/4 inch

Buttercreme is my all time fav! Some other good ones are, Blueberry, Chrismas Cookies, Sage and Citrus (doesn’t smell like you would expect it to), Farmhouse apple, spiced pear, honeydew melon, peach, macintosh, peach and macintosh, pumpkin pie, spiced pumpkin, vanilla caramel…can you tell I’m a Yankee Candle junkie?? To play it safe go with something like Buttercreme, I don’t think it’s too strong of a scent that many wouldn’t like….Sage and Citrus isn’t either.
