With the holidays at hand, you may have decided to hold at least one of the family gatherings at your home. If you haven’t done this before, there may be a number of eventualities you should prepare for and a little planning you should do before the day arrives. Here are a few tips that may take some of the stresses out of hosting a dinner.

Table Settings

The first thing you need to know is how many people you can comfortably seat at the dining tables in your home. As you start to set down the place settings, you should think about the fact that there should be 2 – 2 Â½ feet of space between each of those place settings. This gives those sitting at the table enough room to move their elbows and arms while eating without hitting each other.

Chair Space

If you are putting in dining tables for this event, you need to make sure that while you get a table large enough to seat your guests that you also have enough space to allow your guests to get in and out of their chairs. If you have chairs without arms you have a little flexibility in this, but if the chairs around it have arms, you need to make sure that the chairs can be pushed 1 Â½ – 2 feet away from the table so your guests can comfortably get out of their chair without tumbling.

How to Serve

Once you have the dining tables themselves sorted out, you need to figure out the best way to get all those great food items to it. This is where a number of optional pieces of furniture may come in. Many can be purchased to match the surface you purchased and look like they belong as part of the dÃ©cor when they are not being used.

Server – A server for the most part is a small table that can be set near the dining table and is a place where portions of the meal can be set while they are waiting to be put on the table or passed around to all the guests. If you have multiple dining tables set up for the meal, you may even want to consider a server with wheels so it’s easy to get it from one table to the next.

Buffet – Another common piece of furniture that goes with dining tables is a buffet. A buffet is traditionally a long cabinet-style piece of furniture with the top at table level. This can be set up along a wall of the room and the top used as a space to set or serve portions of the meal. The drawers and cabinets beneath are a great place to keep extra napkins and serving items. Many people use a buffet to serve just such a meal – a buffet. They line the portions of the meal up along the top of the buffet, let people serve themselves and then return with their plates to the dining tables to enjoy their dinner.

Dining Chairs are chairs for dining tables in dining rooms…? Maybe a hundred years ago, or for a traditional household that has the space to label a room the “dining room”, and then of course they would have a dining table & dining chairs to fit into that space. BUT, for the majority of city dwellers, tendency would be to have a table and chairs which fits into a smaller space. Mind you the table is used for eating (aka dining table), and when eating at the table we are seated on chairs (guess they could be referred to as…dining chairs)…

Anyway, lets talk about the transition from the formal dining room to the modern day kitchen area. Here is a little more for you city dwellers to digest about the dining room and its furniture… A dining room is a room for consuming food. In modern times it is usually adjacent to the kitchen for convenience in serving, although in medieval times it was often on an entirely different floor level. Historically the dining room is furnished with a rather large dining table and a number of dining chairs; the most common table shape is generally rectangular with two armed end chairs and an even number of un-armed side chairs along the long sides.

In the Middle Ages, upper class Britons and other European nobility in castles or large manor houses dined in the Great Hall. This was a large multi-function room capable of seating the bulk of the population of the house. The family would sit at the head table on a raised dais, with the rest of the population arrayed in order of diminishing rank away from them. Tables in the great hall would tend to be long trestle tables with benches. The sheer number of people in a Great Hall meant it would probably have had a busy, bustling atmosphere. Suggestions that it would also have been quite smelly and smoky are probably, by the standards of the time, unfounded.

The owners of such properties began to develop a taste for more intimate gatherings in smaller ‘parlors’ or privee parlors’ off the main hall. Over time, the nobility took more of their meals in the parlor, and the parlor became, functionally, a dining room (or was split into two separate rooms). Eventually dining in the Great Hall became something that was done primarily on special occasions.

A typical dining room will contain a dining table with dining chairs arranged along the sides and ends of the table, as well as other pieces of furniture. In modern homes, the dining room is increasingly used only for formal dining with guests or on special occasions. Informal daily meals are often taken in the kitchen, breakfast nook or family room. This was traditionally the case in England, where the dining room would for many families be used only on Sundays, other meals being eaten in the kitchen. Often tables in modern dining rooms will have a removable leaf to allow for the larger number of people present on those special occasions without taking up extra space when not in use. Although the “typical” family dining experience is at a “dining table” or some sort of kitchen area, some choose to make their dining rooms more comfortable by using sofas or comfortable chairs…

Looking for some Nice Cushions to sit on for a dining experience. I’m not using chairs. Any ideas?

I went to this Moroccan Restaurant along time ago and they sit on these nice round cushions that were very comfy. I’m trying to find somemore like that or something that people use in a traditional sense to sit down and eat. I don’t wnt to use chairs. And my table will be atg least 2 feet off the ground. I’m aiming for a worldly, relaxing, eclectic approach for my dining room.
Anyone know any great websites, or what types of cushions I can be looking for?

how do you fix tears in the seams on a leather chair on armrests. Both armrests are torn. Would sewing work?

I have a tear in my 5 year old leather chair, where the seams meet in the middle of the armrests. It looks awful, but not sure how to go about fixing it. I thought about sewing, but not sure if that would be good for the leather. Also thought about superglue, but not sure if that is a good route either.

You can actually sew it with a leather needle, if you are a decent sewer. You can find a leather needle at the fabric stores usually in packs of upholstery and specialty needles. Ask them at the store about the type of thread to use because you will need a heavy duty thread.

But if your sewing skills aren’t too good, you could also get leather glue at the craft store and carefully glue the seam. I would not use superglue because it simply won’t hold for long.

Why do we sit on hard wood chairs in the dining room?

Why do we sit on hard wood chairs in the dining room, but our patio furniture is padded? We sit outside for a barbecue, so it’s not because we’re eating.
For that matter, even some toilet seats are padded.

Dining room tables are generally wood. So, matching chairs are made out of wood. You can get padded chairs, but they’re expensive. You can also get pads that sit on the chair seat in a variety of colors and patterns.

I have this stained dining room table I’d like to refinish?

I was thinking about antiquing my dining room table, its got the originally stain that it had on it from the factory. I wanted to do it in like a cream white, being my dining room is all americian what do i do to do this antiquing, and is it recommanded to paint a dining room table that used for all meals, (with 2 young boys) Does anyone have ideas, I am going crazy looking online for how to do it yourself, all it shows you there is how to stain it, I want to paint and give it an antique look

Paint it white, sand it lightly on the edges and high points with a medium grit sand paper. Then go back with a dark stain (you can mix with a little glaze to keep it from drying faster than you can work) and paint over all the surfaces and cracks. Wipe off. The stain will stay in the creases and the areas that you sanded the white paint off.

Try looking up Debbie Travis’ the painted house show. She does it all the time and it looks great!

Covering for seat cushions of dining chairs?

I would like to know if anyone knows of a good web site with instructions and pictures of how to cover a chair cushion with your owne fabric. I tried looking and havent found what i need. see this is for my mom because shes not listening to my instructions since i know how to do this task. she cut her own cloth with out a ruler, didnt measure what she needed to cut and is using small screws to attach the fabric and the back of a screwdriver to tap them in. i told her she needed a staple gun but shes ignorant and wont listen and i even tried to show her but she doesnt care. The fabric is all bunched up in the corners and looks like its gonna fall off. i need to show her easy instructions with pictures so then maybe she would listen to that inteasd of not listening to me.

If she might like to do more, she can look for an upholstery class at a tech school. That’s what my mom did and she had a great time with all the other ladies too.

What is the best way to cut chair cushion foam?

and if you dont have an electric knife….

A hack saw blade cuts nice clean edges.

If you dont have a hack saw, just use a serrated blade where the length of the entire serrated part, is at least 2 or 3 times longer than the foam.

A bread knife? a bagel knife? foam is the same kind of consistancy-dont try a steak knife, only about half of the blade is serrated and the foam will pull and you could screw up or cut yourself. Good luck!

What kind of wall art should I have in my dining room?

I’m at a loss with what should go with my new palate and design. I have one large white wall that you can see when looking at my dining room. My table is round and black with a glass top. THe chairs are black with Black and Ivory Damask cushions. My new palate is Black, Ivory, and Sage green. I can’t decide what I should hang on the wall. a Big Mirror? A large Black and White framed photo? What a bout something that is Sage green? But What? Please help!

I think three large circular mirrors side by side would look good. Framed in a rich black. The roundness of the mirrors would accent the shape of the table, but having three will make a killer focal point, and draw your eye vertically. If you want to incorporate sage, put a sideboard under the mirrors, fill some vases with river rock, paint some twisted willow green, and put one in front of a mirror.

How can I clean dining room chairs with material covering them?

I’m not sure if the material is cotton or something else, but how can I clean them? The material is dark colored and durable, so it’s not silk, satin, or anyting like that.

How to clean pen off leather chair?

A kid at my work drew smiley faces on the arm of our leather chairs. How do you get black pen out of tan leather.

Old wives tales are a major cause of most repairs that leather technicians go out to fix and hairspray and solvents are the most common. Taking notice of these untested/unproved old wives tales could cost you a great deal of money if it goes wrong.
Just repaired a very expensive jacket that had been virtually ruined by using hairspray to remove ink. It did not remove the ink and left a far worse problem to solve.

Please do not scrub with anything as this will almost certainly remove the finish on the leather and this will be expensive to rectify.

Successful ink removal will depend on the type of leather you have, please see the following:

For ink removal (applies to car leather as well as furniture)

Ink Removal
Removing ink from leather is not a cleaning problem.
Most ink removal products will not work simply because of the length of time the ink has been on the leather.

Ink is a dye and has re-coloured the leather (this is what it is meant to do)
The longer the ink has been on the leather the harder it is to remove because it soaks into the finish. Once it has soaked into the finish you have to use very strong products to remove it, which will also remove finish and pigment which then need replacing.

Pigment/Protected leather
If the ink is on a pigmented leather then the first thing you should try is an LTT Ink Gel.

The fresher the ink the more chance you have of removing it. It is a good idea to have one in your house if you have pale leather and children!!!!

Old ink will be harder to remove than new ink and may mean resorting to solvents which will also remove the finish. This is probably best left to the experts

If an ink gel doesn’t work a solvent based remover will need to be used and it may also remove finish and pigment so is best left to the experts.

You should also be using LTT Leather Protect on your suite. This will act like a ‘scotchgard’ and will make any more mishaps easier to clean off.

You will see many people recommending household products to remove ink – this is not recommended as most simply will not work, some may appear to work but the damage they cause can make a much bigger problem which is then un-repairable (even by a technician)

DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING:

Hairspray – This is very risky as it can make the matter far worse by spreading the ink over a bigger area and can sometimes then be impossible to fix.
Nail Varnish remover/solvents will remove the finish on the leather even if you cannot tell it is doing so and this will then need replacing, and alcohol may do the same depending on the strength of the finish on the leather.
Baby wipes – just about the worst thing you can use on a leather as they break down the finish and will eventually ruin it.
Milk or Toothpaste – these are just silly ideas that will leave sticky residues on the surface which will help to break down the finish on your leather.
Silicones/furniture polish – should not be used on leather. They will form a coating on the surface of the leather which will not allow any moisture to get to the leather itself and will eventually break all the finish down and cause it to crack.
Hide food will not remove ink and will leave residues on the leather which will attract dirt and oils.
Most leather cleaners will not remove ink unless a very good leather protector has been used on a regular basis.
Magic sponges or erasers (Mr, Clean Magic Erasers). These have been tested by experts in the leather industry and have found to do a lot of damage to certain finish types on leather.

Aniline Style Leather
As aniline style leathers are largely absorbent it means that the ink will have soaked straight into the leather itself. This makes it impossible to remove. No product will successfully remove the ink.

DO NOT try ink removing products on aniline style leathers as most will leave a greasy residue which will then cause another problem.

Because aniline style leathers are absorbent the ink will carry on moving through the leather and may become less obvious over time. Cleaning and protecting will also help to dissipate over time.

What style is this old chair?

It has a full curved back all the way to the arms with a t-cushion. I think it was made between the late 60′s to mid 70′s. The furniture maker is Montclair Furniture Co. in Claremont, N.C.

I believe it is called a barrel chair. Although the one I put in the link looks a little different (probably time period), the way the back of the chair is shaped like a barrel indicates the name.

Where can I find parson chairs in four different colors?

I fell in love with a dining set I saw on Macy’s website but it’s a bit out of my reach. It has four different colored parson chairs: beige, deep orange, burnt and moss with a round glass table. if you were replacing a 2 prong adapter with a 3 prong, code requires you to fill the ground. What do you use?

In my house, half has been remodeled (including kitchen, basement, bathrooms) and they are all grounded- I accidently cracked a plug in my dining room with the leg of a chair, and need to replace it, but you can’t buy 2 prongs anymore. I checked the building code and it allows you to use a 3 prong if you fill the ground with “Caulk or some form of filler”. I’m not ready to run new wiring to this side of the house. What do you fill the ground hole of the plug with? caulk? some sort of compound?

What is the best treatment for indian oak wood?

I have a dining table with 6 chairs and have been given conflicting advice on whether i should treat the wood or not. It is in untreated (Indian oak) wood form and i want to protect it from stains from food etc, it also feels a bit rough to touch. What would be the best thing to use, if anything?

If you like the color of the wood now, here’s what I would do. I would sand the top to give it a nice smooth surface. Start with about a 100 grit paper and work down to about 220 grit. Then, use a tack cloth to wipe up all of the sawdust.

To seal the wood, I would recommend a polyurethane finsih that is clear. It will seal the wood without changing the color. It will make the wood appear to be deeper and darker in color, but I think such an enhancement is great for all types of wood. I would apply a couple of coats of finish, sanding with steel wool between each coat. This will prevent the finish from becoming gray, dull and require another complete coat. Finally, work the last coat with 0000 rated steel wool. Then, apply a nice coat of floor wax and buff it to a highly polished finish….it wil look great

sand thoroughly for tooth, mask any areas you do not want to paint tightly, and use good old Rustolium black…not a rattle can of spray paint, those things really don’t work well for furniture, use a brush or rent a conventional sprayer, or hire someone to do it.
lacquer will cause the factory finish to blister, do NOT use lacquer. use an oil-base enamel type paint for maximum adherence and durability.

What does my recurring dream mean? I rarely remember my dreams, if I have them?? So I’m freakin’ out!

I have had this dream at least 3 times in the past month… Everyone is asleep in the house. I hear the front door close (not open), and I wake up. I walk down the hallway to find a strange woman in my livingroom. She looks at me, seems to pay no attention that I am there – and walks into my 2 year old daughter’s room and comes back out with her. My daughter is still asleep in this woman’s arms. She starts walking toward the front door with her, and I scream frantically. I tackle her and wrestle my daughter free – by this time my husband is awake and he grabs the strange woman. We tie the woman to an adjacent dining room chair, and call the police. The woman shows no emotion, no remorse for what she has tried to do. The police show up and haul her away to jail. As it turns out, the woman has another woman accomplice in her car outside, along with another (perhaps also kidnapped) child. Then I wake up?

I have red sofas, what colour should i paint my walls?

My sofas are like a burgandy red chenille, i have beech colour furniture and brown leather dining chairs in the room also. I currently have magnolia walls but i want to paint them. I am thinking of like a stone colour with a darker contrast on one wall. i have just brought some new curtains which are like a goldy brown silk. I am just not sure that the walls will match. i dont want to be too drastic but i want some nice tones that will make a slight difference. i did want to paint one wall a rasberry colour but i cant as i have my sofas on that wall.

I like your idea of a neutral stone colour with possibly a feature wall in a darker shade of that neutral…too many colours would be overwhelming …why not get a sample-pot and paint one wall for a try. There are some fabulous colour selector tools around and even if you go to your paint store you can get some colour brochures to give you some ideas of colour schemes etc…there are also on-line home decorator sites that will have info on this.

- Encourage the cat to investigate the posts by scenting them with catnip or hanging toys at the tops of the posts. Take care to place posts in areas where the cat will be inclined to climb on them.

- Discourage inappropriate scratching by removing or covering desirable objects in your home. Turn speakers to the wall. Use plastic, double-sided sticky tape, sandpaper or vinyl carpet runner (turned upside-down to expose the knobby feet) on furniture or on the floor where the cat would stand to scratch. Place scratching posts adjacent to these objects.

- Clip the cat’s nails regularly.

- Consider using plastic caps (Soft PawsTM) for the cat’s nails. These caps attach to the nails with an adhesive so that if the cat scratches, no damage is done. The caps are temporary, lasting about 4 to 6 weeks.

- If, and only if, you catch your cat in the act of scratching an inappropriate object, you may try startling the cat by clapping your hands or squirting her with water. Do this sparingly because the cat may associate you with this startling event and come to fear you.

WHAT NOT TO DO:
- Do not hold your cat up to the scratching post and force her to drag her claws on it. This procedure may frighten the cat and teach her to avoid the scratching post completely.

- Do not throw away your cat’s favorite scratching post when it becomes unsightly. Cats prefer shredded and torn objects because they can really get their claws into the fabric—and best of all, the object is infiltrated with their scent.

add: declawing is the lazy route out of this situation. besides cats use their claws for more than just scratching. they need them for balance when walking on thing and while trying to get to that annoying itch. not to mention they need to for an escape route from danger.

how do i make my baby nap in a new place?

my son is now 5 months old and particuarly large, until now he’s always napped in his rocker and always been rocked to sleep. because he’s growing out of his rocking chair now i want to move his nap time to a large cushion on the floor but i’m worried that he will put up a huge fuss to this change in routine and not being rocked any more. have you gone through anything like this? what worked or didn’t work for you? any advice to make this transition smooth would be appreiceated
he sleeps in a cot at night and have no problems with his night time routine. but i am not wanting to have him in another room during the day. i know it is selfish but i need to be around him.

Where does he sleep at night? Where ever he goes to bed at night make that the place he takes a nap also. It will make his body recognize that place as a place for sleep.

I personally then would have no problem laying a blanket on the floor for him to nap on. It might take him a few days to get used to it. My son is currently laying on the floor taking his nap because I don’t want to run upstairs to lay him down. And he seems to sleep really well on the floor.

Plastic wrap on seats of new dining chairs?

I recently bought a new dining set, the table and chairs are all wood. Each chair’s cloth seat portion itself is completely sealed with a thin, transparent plastic wrap. Am I supposed to rip that plastic wrap off? Is this like the pins in men’s dress shirts, i.e. something to make the product present well but you then have to waste a bunch of time removing it before you can actually use it?

OK so I lied. I’ve had the chairs for 7 yrs now and still have the plastic on, and yes they’re beginning to rip in spite of incredible gentle use. I’ll go rip them off now.

Because it’s a cloth seat, the plastic is to protect it from dirt and dust during shipping. You may leave them on but because they are so thin they will start ripping after sitting on them often. You can have them professionally covered by a furniture upholsterer, they would provide a heavier plastic which would last longer, keep the cloth clean and protected from food stains, spills, dirt and dust.

Reupholstering a dining room chair?

I would like to change the fabric on my dining room chair. Will have to change out the foam/padding as well? The chairs are only 3-4 years old and the padding appears to be intact. (Or will it come apart when i remove the old fabric)?

i would just put the new fabric right over the old, why not?
just measure it 4 inches longer than the chair measures, that will give you about 2 inches to play with and staple

One cannot choose the right rocker just by looking at it. There are many things that have to be taken into account and considered before you settle on the one chair that is made just for you. Read on to know what these things are.

Choosing A Rocking Chair

1. Size of the rocking chair: Firstly, you need to make sure that the chair is properly sized for you. What do we mean by that? Well, for starters, when you sit on the chair, your legs should touch the floor easily and should not be left dangling off the rocker. If your legs do not reach the floor, the rocker is too big for you. On the other hand, if your legs are touching the floor but your knees are practically to your chest, then the chair is too small for you. Therefore, choose a chair which allows your legs to reach the floor, but just so. Another thing to check is that the seat is big enough to seat you comfortably, but not so much that the armrests are too wide apart and you have trouble resting your arms on them. And for the backrest, it should be so high that your head is reaching the head rest but not rising over it.

2. Indoor or outdoor rockers: There are some rocking chairs that are made for indoor use, some that can be used outdoors, whereas some that can be used inside as well as outside your home. Thus, before choosing a rocking chair, be clear about where you intend to put it. Indoor rockers are the ones with cushions and padding, whereas outdoor ones obviously dont have them. Those rockers that can be used in any location are the ones that have cushions and extra padding, but which are made from materials and fabric that is weather proof.

3. The rockers: The curved base of the rocking chair is somewhat confusingly also known as the rocker. This is the most important part of the chair, without which it would not rock properly. When buying any rocking chair, make sure the rocker is pitched properly. You can do this by sitting on the chair and rocking it to and fro. If you get a feeling that the chair might tip over, then the rocker is not pitched properly. However, if you can rock comfortably, and there is no danger of tipping over even when you use it as a recliner, then the pitch of the rocker is perfect.

4. The rocking motion: Everyone knows that the motion of the chair should be smooth and continuous. But did you know that you should not have to rock the chair every few seconds? Yes, thats right. A rocking chair that has the complete range of motion will keep going for a couple of minutes with just a single push. So, that is what you should be looking for.

5. The comfort factor: The rocking chair should be absolutely comfortable for you. Your hands should reach the armrests comfortably and should fit on them properly. The seat should have a downward slope and should support your lower back too. In addition to being firm, the back and the seat of the rocking chair should be flexible. In other words, if you are not 100% comfortable on the rocking chair, do not buy it.

6. Safety aspects: While rocking chairs are extremely user friendly, there is some danger involved with the curved rockers. If you are not careful, you can have your feet crushed if caught under the rockers. Same goes for little children. Thus, if safety is a concern for you, more so with kids around, then you may choose a different type of rocker known as glider rockers. The base of such chairs is not curved but sits flat on the floor, thereby making them safer options.

7. How much are you willing to spend? If money is not a concern, you should consider buying an exclusive hand crafted rocking chair made by one of the many people who are masters at their craft. It may set you back by thousands of dollars, but every penny will be worth it. But, if you are on a budget, you can still find a comfortable rocking chair for few hundred dollars, albeit not a branded one, unless you decide to buy used.

8. Decor of your house: After ensuring the comfort and the safety factor of the rocker, you need to look at its design and style. Since the rocker will have the pride of the place in your home, it should look the part as well. So make sure the chair you choose compliments your home dcor and does not look out of place in your beautiful house.

9. Assembling the chair: Some rockers arrive fully assembled, and some have to be put together at home. If you are not good at following instructions and assembling things, you probably want one that is shipped completely assembled.

By answering the questions asked above and by keeping the above criteria in mind when choosing a rocking chair, you will definitely be able to find a rocker that fits you like a glove, is extremely comfortable, looks good in your home, and serves you for years to come.

how much do I charge for painting two rooms?

I will be painting a dining and living room all antique white. All trim work will be a different color.

I always try to figure out how LONG it will take me, and charge accordingly. Some of the factors that can increase the average time to paint a room are —–

How much cut out and trim work is involved? Are you painting the ceilings too? How tall are the walls 8′ ,9′ or even 12′? When a different trim or wall color is used it requires additional touch up for a perfect job (one wall darker etc.). Do you have to remove and replace the furniture?
Do they want to help, (I charge more when they want to help!)

Estimate the time you think it will take, then multiply that time by 1.5 ( 10 hours x 1.5 = 15 ). (Almost everyone I know in the construction business underestimates the time required) Then multiply that by what you figure your time is worth (15 x $20.00 = $300.00)
Plus the cost of any materials YOU pay for and you should come out pretty close.
