With the holidays at hand, you may have decided to hold at least one of the family gatherings at your home. If you haven’t done this before, there may be a number of eventualities you should prepare for and a little planning you should do before the day arrives. Here are a few tips that may take some of the stresses out of hosting a dinner.

Table Settings

The first thing you need to know is how many people you can comfortably seat at the dining tables in your home. As you start to set down the place settings, you should think about the fact that there should be 2 – 2 Â½ feet of space between each of those place settings. This gives those sitting at the table enough room to move their elbows and arms while eating without hitting each other.

Chair Space

If you are putting in dining tables for this event, you need to make sure that while you get a table large enough to seat your guests that you also have enough space to allow your guests to get in and out of their chairs. If you have chairs without arms you have a little flexibility in this, but if the chairs around it have arms, you need to make sure that the chairs can be pushed 1 Â½ – 2 feet away from the table so your guests can comfortably get out of their chair without tumbling.

How to Serve

Once you have the dining tables themselves sorted out, you need to figure out the best way to get all those great food items to it. This is where a number of optional pieces of furniture may come in. Many can be purchased to match the surface you purchased and look like they belong as part of the dÃ©cor when they are not being used.

Server – A server for the most part is a small table that can be set near the dining table and is a place where portions of the meal can be set while they are waiting to be put on the table or passed around to all the guests. If you have multiple dining tables set up for the meal, you may even want to consider a server with wheels so it’s easy to get it from one table to the next.

Buffet – Another common piece of furniture that goes with dining tables is a buffet. A buffet is traditionally a long cabinet-style piece of furniture with the top at table level. This can be set up along a wall of the room and the top used as a space to set or serve portions of the meal. The drawers and cabinets beneath are a great place to keep extra napkins and serving items. Many people use a buffet to serve just such a meal – a buffet. They line the portions of the meal up along the top of the buffet, let people serve themselves and then return with their plates to the dining tables to enjoy their dinner.

The most important part of your dining room is the table. Modern dining tables come in a lot of different styles and designs that can give your home the look and feel you have been looking for. If you are looking for a new dining table, you may want to consider the available styles and designs to choose from before visiting local retailers.

First you will need to decide whether you want a contemporary table, retro style, antique or something that is simple with no fuss. Consider the make up of the table as well. Antique tables are generally worn and may need TLC to keep them looking their best and are usually made of some type of wood like oak, walnut or cherry. Contemporary and retro style tables offer you choices of glass, wood or laminate as a surface. You should also consider whether your table would best suit your kitchen or the dining room. Although there is very little difference in the two, one is a little more formal than the other.

It may be that only the top of your existing table looks old and you would rather keep it. In this case table pads are the answer. They are pieces of wood that have been cut to perfectly fit your existing table and cover only the top. They come in many different styles and woods and can even help protect a new table from scratches or damage. Table pads can be custom built to fit any size or shape of table top.

One of the most popular styles is the round pedestal table. These are made for smaller rooms and designed to seat six or less people. Most come with a leaf that will expand the table by about eighteen inches to seat at least two more. The pedestal on these tables expands as well with a plain wheeled leg to hold the center of the table up. These give a more antique look to your dining room and usually have a carved apron around the outer edge of the surface.

Chairs are the pieces of furniture that get most of the abuse. They are scooted across carpet and rugs to loosen the legs, items that are in pockets scratch them and many times the backs become loose as well. Some people even end up mismatching their dining sets by buying mismatched chairs. If this happens to you, consider using slipcovers to cover them up during a dinner party. Slipcovers hide the little imperfections your chairs may display while making a beautiful setting for your dining room.

When visiting local retailers explain what you are looking for in kitchen sets as well as dining room sets so they can better help you with your options. Many are available in oak finishes as well as with glass table tops. Retailers may also be able to special order modern dining room tables that are not readily available for purchase.

Dining Chairs are chairs for dining tables in dining rooms…? Maybe a hundred years ago, or for a traditional household that has the space to label a room the “dining room”, and then of course they would have a dining table & dining chairs to fit into that space. BUT, for the majority of city dwellers, tendency would be to have a table and chairs which fits into a smaller space. Mind you the table is used for eating (aka dining table), and when eating at the table we are seated on chairs (guess they could be referred to as…dining chairs)…

Anyway, lets talk about the transition from the formal dining room to the modern day kitchen area. Here is a little more for you city dwellers to digest about the dining room and its furniture… A dining room is a room for consuming food. In modern times it is usually adjacent to the kitchen for convenience in serving, although in medieval times it was often on an entirely different floor level. Historically the dining room is furnished with a rather large dining table and a number of dining chairs; the most common table shape is generally rectangular with two armed end chairs and an even number of un-armed side chairs along the long sides.

In the Middle Ages, upper class Britons and other European nobility in castles or large manor houses dined in the Great Hall. This was a large multi-function room capable of seating the bulk of the population of the house. The family would sit at the head table on a raised dais, with the rest of the population arrayed in order of diminishing rank away from them. Tables in the great hall would tend to be long trestle tables with benches. The sheer number of people in a Great Hall meant it would probably have had a busy, bustling atmosphere. Suggestions that it would also have been quite smelly and smoky are probably, by the standards of the time, unfounded.

The owners of such properties began to develop a taste for more intimate gatherings in smaller ‘parlors’ or privee parlors’ off the main hall. Over time, the nobility took more of their meals in the parlor, and the parlor became, functionally, a dining room (or was split into two separate rooms). Eventually dining in the Great Hall became something that was done primarily on special occasions.

A typical dining room will contain a dining table with dining chairs arranged along the sides and ends of the table, as well as other pieces of furniture. In modern homes, the dining room is increasingly used only for formal dining with guests or on special occasions. Informal daily meals are often taken in the kitchen, breakfast nook or family room. This was traditionally the case in England, where the dining room would for many families be used only on Sundays, other meals being eaten in the kitchen. Often tables in modern dining rooms will have a removable leaf to allow for the larger number of people present on those special occasions without taking up extra space when not in use. Although the “typical” family dining experience is at a “dining table” or some sort of kitchen area, some choose to make their dining rooms more comfortable by using sofas or comfortable chairs…

What should I do with a blank wall in my small dining room?

My boyfriend and I live in a decent sized apartment where the living room, kitchen, and dining room are all more/less open to one another. We dont use the dining room so much for actually dining but there is a table. There are two walls but one is a big bay window. We have no idea what to do with the other blank wall of about 6ft in length. We want something substantial there, not just a picture or a mirror. However, we don’t really have use for like a typical dining room china cabinet or something like that. We were thinking some kind of shelving unit but its too boring. We need storage but not blandness or major expenses. Help & Ideas! Thanks1

The first thing that come to mind is a buffet. It would provide cabinetry beneath, and a top for possible shelf space. A nice tapestry above would provide nice visuals. Or possiblly an entertainment center with stereo for dining?

Looking for some Nice Cushions to sit on for a dining experience. I’m not using chairs. Any ideas?

I went to this Moroccan Restaurant along time ago and they sit on these nice round cushions that were very comfy. I’m trying to find somemore like that or something that people use in a traditional sense to sit down and eat. I don’t wnt to use chairs. And my table will be atg least 2 feet off the ground. I’m aiming for a worldly, relaxing, eclectic approach for my dining room.
Anyone know any great websites, or what types of cushions I can be looking for?

Should I try to refinish dining room chairs?

I’m having a really hard time finding four dining room chairs to match my table. I’ve finally found some solid wood chairs that have the absolute perfect shape, but I think the shade may be slightly lighter (my table is very, very dark brown — barely distinguishable from black — and the chairs are described as ‘dark chocolate’). I’m tempted to just buy these gorgeous, well-priced chairs and refinish them. Is this crazy? I’ve never refinished furniture before, but the chairs are simple, modern, blocky with no scrolls or other details. What would be involved in this, and how much time might it take?

You can also spray on a lacquer toner. Use a very light touch as they quickly go from not-quite-there to opaque. In other words, sneak up on it with 5 light coats rather than one heavy one.

Is an espresso or black dining set a bad idea with small children?

We are looking to buy a new dining set and really like the espresso and black one’s we’ve seen. Problem is we have small children and I’m afraid it will look terrible in no time. When I see them in stores I see so many scratches on them that I can’t imagine how they’d end up in my house! I thought about maybe putting glass over the top but was told that would be very expensive? So should I just forget about the dark finishes?

if it were me,,being i have small children,i would get something neutral,, if stores have that,,when it comes to furniture,, i defitnately choose something that doesnt show scratches near as bad,, kids will be kids,if you want something new, that will last a while, go with neutral,if not i’m sure second hand stores would have something.hope this helps

Why do we sit on hard wood chairs in the dining room?

Why do we sit on hard wood chairs in the dining room, but our patio furniture is padded? We sit outside for a barbecue, so it’s not because we’re eating.
For that matter, even some toilet seats are padded.

Dining room tables are generally wood. So, matching chairs are made out of wood. You can get padded chairs, but they’re expensive. You can also get pads that sit on the chair seat in a variety of colors and patterns.

How do I paint an outdated ordinary wooden dining room set…..?

…without sanding it. I want a new look without the HOURS of SANDING! Note: the table top is very shiny like it has extra coating of a pretective something on it.

As some other people have said, you pretty much have to do a little sanding so the paint will be able to stick. You don’t have to remove all of the existing finish, just roughen the surface. I would use 150 or 220-grit sandpaper. Go over the surface just enough so that it doesn’t have any shine left. It won’t take very long… don’t worry.

Next, and very importantly, APPLY PRIMER! The primer is designed to stick like crazy and will enable the paint to stick to the furniture. Without it, the paint will peel right off in no time. “Kilz” is the brand that’s common around here, but any latex-based primer from a hardware store should do. It’s available in cans or spray-on.

Next… paint! I’d recomment a good quality, semi-gloss (medium-shine) latex paint for durability*. Also use a quality brush to avoid ending up with bristle marks that will detract from your finished project.

(*Oil-based would be even more durable than latex, but it’s much nastier and harder to work with, so I’d avoid it.)

I have this stained dining room table I’d like to refinish?

I was thinking about antiquing my dining room table, its got the originally stain that it had on it from the factory. I wanted to do it in like a cream white, being my dining room is all americian what do i do to do this antiquing, and is it recommanded to paint a dining room table that used for all meals, (with 2 young boys) Does anyone have ideas, I am going crazy looking online for how to do it yourself, all it shows you there is how to stain it, I want to paint and give it an antique look

Paint it white, sand it lightly on the edges and high points with a medium grit sand paper. Then go back with a dark stain (you can mix with a little glaze to keep it from drying faster than you can work) and paint over all the surfaces and cracks. Wipe off. The stain will stay in the creases and the areas that you sanded the white paint off.

Try looking up Debbie Travis’ the painted house show. She does it all the time and it looks great!

I want to know a fair selling price for an old mahogany dining room set I own?

From the reasearch i have done it is Circa 1930-50′s, Dunkin Phife style, solid mahogany, 72″ pedistal tabel w/leaf extends to 102″, 4 reg chairs, 2 arm chairs, large china cabnet and buffet. banded/inlay. in good condition

Duncan fife is well designed. Generally this sells best out
of site of the hotels. Used in many hotels in history this old
line of furnitures is good in that way, it has top utility wear.
Though there are updates recently the value is around 2500.
The antiquity is not as valuable as the chartership to get
someone experience with this quality, try a recent wedding.
Quality here is not for sale, that would be 20,000. It is an

i am having trouble rearring my furniture in my living room can you help me decorate?

Begin with your biggest pieces (sofa, love seat). Arrange them so they both fit and are functional for you (do they face a TV for example). Then after the big pieces are where you want them, you can fill in the smaller tables.

Do you have a long wall for your sofa? Or how about under a window? Try to put your love seat at a 90 degree angle from the sofa or directly across from it in order to maintain a good flow for conversation when you have visitors.

I tried looking and havent found what i need. see this is for my mom because shes not listening to my instructions since i know how to do this task. she cut her own cloth with out a ruler, didnt measure what she needed to cut and is using small screws to attach the fabric and the back of a screwdriver to tap them in. i told her she needed a staple gun but shes ignorant and wont listen and i even tried to show her but she doesnt care. The fabric is all bunched up in the corners and looks like its gonna fall off. i need to show her easy instructions with pictures so then maybe she would listen to that inteasd of not listening to me.

If she might like to do more, she can look for an upholstery class at a tech school. That’s what my mom did and she had a great time with all the other ladies too.

i live in a very humid climate with no air conditioning. how do i care for them. since i have no heat here the cracks could not be caused by dryness.

Is it ok to have brushed nickel kitchen hardware and lathan bronze finish chandelier over the kitchen table?

Its a galley kitchen with the dining table at the other end. The dining table can be seen from the living room. Our living room has medium oak floors, expresso coffee and end tables and beige couches. The counter top is Labrador Granite, the cabinets are a clean white and the sink is stainless steel with a (not sure if its stainless steel, chrome or nickel (not brushed) faucet.

Since our floors are a warm brown, I have the vents for the air (on the floor) a ventian bronze throughout the house.

Is it ok to have the ‘silver’ coloured hardware and facet in the kitchen with a bronze light fixture and chandelier or should I get ‘silver’ coloured light fixtures as well?

If so, how do you go nickel or ‘silver’ for a chandelier and still look soft?

Designers are less “matchy” these days, but, like you, I think unity in hardware is important.

However, in this case I would go with what you really like. Kind of like buying a piece of art-if you love the look of each item it is “correct”-no matter what the critics say.

Refinish/Restore a 60′s chrome/formica dining set?

I have an old kitchen dining set from the 50s/60s that I would like to have restored. Are there places that do everything or would I have to have the metal done somewhere and the upholstery done somewhere else?

This is one of those sets that everyone used to have in their kitchen–with the vinyl covered chairs that matched the formica table top. Sorry, the best I can describe it is that Raymond’s mom had a set in her kitchen on Everybody Loves Raymond!

What can I expect to pay for this type of thing and does anyone have experience having it done?

The table you should take to a furniture refrinisher. Assuming the chairs are not rusty or broken, you can reupholster them yourself.

I am putting my bed into the living room.Any tips on how to camouflage the bed so it blends with living room?

I have a huge living room so space won’t be a problem. I have a bar area and I sold the bar stools.Now in that area will go a queen bed. I am doing all this as I will have a new king bed in bedroom. I want it to look neat and not terrible.
As soon as you enter the apartment(1br and living room) there’s the kitchen on the left,a passage leading to a big living room.A china cabinet against the right wall, a tv with stand next to it.

Make a daybed out of it. Push the bed so that on long side is against a wall. Buy some bolster covers and put your pillows inside those for day time. Make or buy a bed spread that looks more like couch fabric, maybe some muted stripes. Now when you make up your bed in the morning, pull the spread nice and even and taut all around. Tuck it in if needed. Put the pillows inside the bolster covers and zip closed. Place the bolsters evenly along the wall side to look like the back of a couch. Now when folks come in and look at it they will not be sure if it’s a bed or a couch and you just say its a day bed. In other words, during the day it’s a couch and at night it’s a bed. Problem solved.

How do you work the self storing leaves to a dining room table?

I was given a beautiful oak dining room table, which I was told has two leaves that are supposed to store right IN the table itself. The person who gave me the table said she NEVER figured it out, and neither can I. I really want to be able to use this feature to store the leaves. Does anyone have any “secrets”? Swivel or dining-style chairs for patio furniture?

Which do you prefer? This would be for a dining set in cast aluminum that looks like wrought iron and would be used on a wooden deck (not a patio). I like the look of dining chairs (i.e., with legs) because I prefer a traditional style with my old house, but I’m wondering if swivel chairs would be more comfortable and practical on a deck (no legs to get caught in the cracks). Opinions?
One more thing — swivel chairs cost about twice as much as dining chairs.

I agree with the person who suggested a mix of the 2 kinds of chairs if you have a table large enough for 6 chairs. If you are just getting four chairs, having them all the same will probably look better. Swivel chairs can be very comfortable for just sitting, but I always feel like I have to lean forward uncomfortably to eat at the table because they tend to tilt back slightly. So it really depends, are you planning on using the set mostly for sitting at the table and eating, or for sitting and relaxing? I’ve never had a problem with the legs on non-swivel chairs getting caught in the deck cracks–but it is something to consider if the cracks on your deck are wider, or the legs are particularly small. What kind of wall art should I have in my dining room?

I’m at a loss with what should go with my new palate and design. I have one large white wall that you can see when looking at my dining room. My table is round and black with a glass top. I think three large circular mirrors side by side would look good. Framed in a rich black. The roundness of the mirrors would accent the shape of the table, but having three will make a killer focal point, and draw your eye vertically. If you want to incorporate sage, put a sideboard under the mirrors, fill some vases with river rock, paint some twisted willow green, and put one in front of a mirror.

Need color suggestions for painting my dining room/kitchen having trouble picking new color scheme.?

I was playing with the idea to paint my pantry doors with black chalkboard paint and adding some dark rolling blinds to hide the pool area when we have formal dinners. I was thinking neutral or blues but I just recently painted my living room in the tiffany blue/teal and chocolate. (I don’t want it to clash) The dining room can be seen from my foyer and shares a wall so I’m not too sure were I should end the foyer and start painting the hall way.
Room details:

id go with a medium tan color. it will work well with the black appliances and the cabinets and floor tiles. it would also compliment the blue and chocolate of the living room.Some dark brown or brick red roman blinds would work well with tan walls also.
another option would be gray, but it would make the room feel cold with the white floor and the stainless steel appliances.
You could paint a section of the pantry doors in the black chalkboard and then frame that section with stainless steel framing.

You should get some wood stain paint that is cherry colored and paint over it lightly. That should hide it, either that or put place mats down on the table to hide the spot and prevent it from happening again. I know sometimes place mats can look pretty hideous, but if you find the right ones, they can make all the difference.

Which is stronger – metal or chrome?

I am trying to decide between 2 different dining sets, one has chairs and a table that have a “silver powder coated metal base” and the other has chairs and table with a “chrome base”. Would one of these materials be stronger than the other?

The powder coated metal would be stronger by far. There’s no telling what’s underneath the chrome. Also, vinyl laminate is a hard, smooth surface. But not as durable as formica. Most people have vinyl laminate for countertops if that gives you an idea.. its the thin colored part that is glued over usually a particle board.

how do you remove the white marks left on a table after putting something hot on it?

I put a hot platter on my oak dining room table and it left these white milky looking spots. I’ve tried rubbing them out, but nothing is working…please help!!

Depending on how deep the marks go you may need bigger guns that Scotts Liquid gold. If the white marks reappear after the Scott’s has absorbed in the wood, you will need Howard’s Restore a Finish. It does not damage the finish but it will restore it. You can find it in the home improvement stores on the paint stain aisle and you can get it in clear or to match your wood tone. It is easy to apply, just wipe on and let it sit on the surface, then use a soft cloth to buff off the excess. In my experience, it does a better job with heat rings.

my friends think it’s too different, but I love that old-fashioned look.

Leather would look great with this dining room furniture. I would go with dark brown and highlight the couches with your color scheme for the sofa pillows.

Leather will stay nice for years and they are pet and kid friendly. Very easy to take care of. Great if you have allergys also.

I have dining room chairs that have a resin like wood. any tips on how to strip and re-stain it? we got this dining room set and realized after we got it home that there was this resin like wood on the back of the chairs and on the columns of the table. We did notice that it is easy to strip off, but we are not sure on how to re-stain it. We did try to re-stain on a spot that is hard to see, but the stain seems to wipe off when it is dried.

If your chairs and table have a resin coating or parts of it are made with resin, give up trying to stain it. Resin is produced with coloring already in it. Find the brand name of the furniture and contact the company that made it. See what you are actually working with, or in this case working against.

What paint to match with green speckled countertops in a kitchen??

I want to paint my kitchen and i have these green countertops that I cannot afford to replace so I need to match them. I have trim along all of the walls and the top half is white the bottom is what I would like to paint and leave the top half white. My cabinets and appliances are stark white. Any suggestions? Also you can see the dining room and living room from the kitchen-both of those rooms have wainscotting with a light buttercup color on top and white on the bottom. I am trying to go for a tuscan/french bistro style. Also my table and chairs in the kitchen are cast iron with light tan cushions! Thanks

Basic cutlery placement: fork to the left of the plate, knife to the right, then the spoon, additional silver is placed to the outside of the setting in reverse order to the way it’s used (i.e., the earlier the course, the farther away from the plate it is. The bread and butter plate is placed to the outside of the last fork, or to the left and above if there are many courses of the space is tight. Cutlery should be placed at least one inch from the bottom of the table, and the tops of the forks should be level with the bottom of the first spoon slightly higher than the bottom of the knife, and remaining spoons duplicating this spacing. The wine glasses are placed above the outside edge of the knife blade descending (if there are more than one) towards the diners right hand, first poured, lowest. Any water glass should be placed to the outside of the wine glass arrangement. If space is limited, the bread and butter plate of the final course silver may be placed directly above the plate: the silver horizontally with the handles pointing toward the hand that will grasp them. REMEMBER, as with any rules of etiquette, these rules are guidelines only, to be bent for the convenience and comfort (physical and mental) of the diners… and grace and safety of service of there are servants or waiters. The table should look orderly, the spacing even, and everything accessible. Here’s a good example:

do u like or hate counter height dining table set and why?

I have counter height dining set and I liked it because it is distinctive from the regular table. Now I begin to notice the not so nice view under the table with too much chair legs. I wanted to know what is your opinion if it is just me that think this way. How can I change my thoughts about it or get a new dining set?

This type of set is hell for shorter people, older people, and anyone with weak or bad knees. When it comes to furnishings, function as opposed to form warrants much more consideration than it usually gets. As previously said, cutting the legs down to size is a practical solution. If you want to maintain some semblance of ‘distinctive’ form in your dining area, and fill the empty space above the table, look for a distinctive vase or bowl in which to create a striking floral arrangement. Perhaps a decorative bowl with a floral “frog” in it to hold a tall branch or single stem, with smaller floral or wood pieces arranged to hide the hardware. Alternatively, if there isn’t a light fixture above the table, one might help with your design aspirations…perhaps a mobile, or create a table centerpiece of varying height candles.

In the living room we have a big green leather sofa with 2 matching armchairs. We also have the television in the living room. We have a computer and an oak coffee table.

In the dining room we have a dining table and six matching chairs. The walls are yellow. I think it looks disgusting but my dad likes it.

In the kitchen we have the oven, the dishwasher, the washing machine and dryer, the fridge and freezer. We also have lots of cupboard to put the plates in. There is also a sink and a working table. The main colour in the kitchen is blue. I don’t really like the kitchen because I have to help my mum there.

I think it really depends on placement. If you want it on or near the wall, a rectangular table would be best. If the table will be in the middle of the room (or traffic flow would take you around it) I would use a round table.

How much would you pay for this furniture?

1) a well used dining set (table, 6 chairs, dining buffet and hutch). multiple owners. structurally sound, but the dining buffet/hutch has water damage on the finish.

2) a well used kitchen table and 6 chairs. multiple owners. structurally sound, but one of the chairs spindles was chewed through by a dog. table is solid oak and gorgeous.

help:i scrubbed off laminate coating on my dining table?

my daughter got paint on it and i scrubbed it off but also scrubbed the laminate how do i fix it.. it looks awful

The easiest fix would be to just lightly sand down the table top with 400 grit sand paper. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and ask for some in the paint department.You don’t have to sand all the original finish off, just rough it up evenly. Get what’s called “Rub-on” Poly. Ask for it…. they’ll know what you’re talking about

It’s real easy to apply and very hard to mess up.

Next, get some “Goo Gone” – Not “Goof-Off”. It’s a citrus based paint remover that’s safe for poly finishes. You can use that next time to remove paint if you ever let her paint again.

Antique Henredon dining room table?

My grandmother has passed and I’ve been tasked with selling her dining room table. It was purchased around 1975 and the brand is Henredon. I havent measured it yet but it looks to be about 8 feet long and is in four sections (I’m not sure how many leafs that is). There are no chairs and it looks like the table surface may need light refinishing. It is a nice dark wood and has a border hanging down under the table about 4 inches low.

Where can I find out what this is worth? Should I try to sell it to an antique store or is this just a regular old’ piece of furniture?

It’s worth much less then it was new in the current market..probably in the neighborhood of 300 to 600. Less if it needs refinishing.

You didn’t mention the wood it will be stamped with a number underneath to tell you. If it is rosewood mahogany it will be worth more up to 1000. The style of the base is another factor..See if you can find the number. Or post a picture. Have a look on Ebay and see if you can find it.

While Henredon is good quality furniture, your table is not old enough to have any collector’s value.

What delivery or moving companies can help me transport a dining room set in south NJ?

i need to move a dining room set (table, 4 chairs, hutch) its about 1 hour drive, what kind of delivery or moving companies can help me do this for cheap?

The cheapest way is to rent a van from a car rental company, buy a few 6-packs of beer and invite a couple of friends along to move the furniture.

I need advise on how to set a dining room table?

It is for Easter. We have a antipasto course, Salad course & pasta course & then the meat with sides. So how should i set the original table. I was thinking just the dinner plate and smaller plate on top. I would then remove the top plate when the antipasto was done. Then give a new plate for the salad, leaving the dinner plate on the table the whole time. I would do the same for the pasta course. Any ideas?

Charger, antipasto plate, remove both – then salad plate, pasta bowl/plate and finally dinner plate but be sure not to forget the dessert.

Silver –

left side of plate from the outside to the plate – antipasto fork, salad fork, and dinner fork.

right side of plate from the outside to the plate – soup spoon if needed with pasta, teaspoon, dinner knife, steak knife.

On bread plate have bread knife at an angle.

At the head of the setting have a dessert fork or spoon (depends on dessert).

Now for the glass:

Water glass to the right angle of plate, behind it to the left; white wine glass, and beside it a red wine glass.

If you are having port for dessert with dark chocolate serve the port glass full with the dessert.

I think that about covers it all – have a wonderful party and remember we are celebrating the risen Lord!

Home decor colour scheme?

Which colour scheme is likelier to end up nicely:
1. Dark brown leather couch & chair with gold drapes and red accent bits, or
2. Dark brown leather couch & chair with gold drapes and blue accent bits?
Am trying to figure out what colour fabric to reupholster my antique dining room chairs (small apartment – dining room & living room are the same essentially!)… help with the red or blue question would be appreciated!

I choose #1, in fact, I did. My livingroom set is cinnamon leather, I have gold drapes and my accent colors are red, olive green and gold. The combination is beautiful.

What goes with black and apple green?

I need help picking a color scheme for my open living/dining room. Currently, all I have to start out with is a black dining room table/chairs, and a pale apple green couch. What is the best treatment for indian oak wood?

I have a dining table with 6 chairs and have been given conflicting advice on whether i should treat the wood or not. It is in untreated (Indian oak) wood form and i want to protect it from stains from food etc, it also feels a bit rough to touch. What would be the best thing to use, if anything?

If you like the color of the wood now, here’s what I would do. I would sand the top to give it a nice smooth surface. Start with about a 100 grit paper and work down to about 220 grit. Then, use a tack cloth to wipe up all of the sawdust.

To seal the wood, I would recommend a polyurethane finsih that is clear. It will seal the wood without changing the color. It will make the wood appear to be deeper and darker in color, but I think such an enhancement is great for all types of wood. I would apply a couple of coats of finish, sanding with steel wool between each coat. This will prevent the finish from becoming gray, dull and require another complete coat. Finally, work the last coat with 0000 rated steel wool. Then, apply a nice coat of floor wax and buff it to a highly polished finish….it wil look great

Family Christmas present – gathering table?

Our current dining set is over 14 years old. Solid glass table and 6 chairs. We have 2 kids, ages 10 and 15. Thinking of getting a counter height “gathering” table with chairs instead of the full size dining table. Any one have any experience with these. I like the idea of a leaf to add more space as needed.

Where can I find a table cloth to fit a large square table?

When I put the leaf in my dining table, it measures 54″ x 54″. It seems that most table cloths are made for rectangular or round tables and not squares. I am also hoping for find one in a light pastel color for Easter. Any ideas?

You will have better luck buying material you like and making one yourself. You get a custom look, and the perfect fit. Even if you don’t sew, it is all straight lines and very easy! You can even make coordinating curtains, napkins, placemats or even seat cushions! OOOhhhh, you done it now! Now I gotta go create something! Thanks for the inspiration!!!

I have an old dining room table I want to paint. Any ideas?

I don’t have time to refinish it. It’s not real wood; it’s that fake material that looks like wood, but rubs off in time. Some of the chairs don’t match quite right. How could I paint this table to make it look right in my dining room?

you have to use an oil primer on it and then sand it lightly and then pick the paint color you want. I would use oil paint on it because it is more durable but if you use an oil based primer you can use latex and then seal it with a latex primer. Think about using a stencil in the middle before you seal it to customize it

Where can I find parson chairs in four different colors?

I fell in love with a dining set I saw on Macy’s website but it’s a bit out of my reach. It has four different colored parson chairs: beige, deep orange, burnt and moss with a round glass table. I have been searching online to find these colors but I can’t. It would be great if I could find these colors in parson chairs and then I could go look for a glass table anywhere else. 3 Piece Dining Set

Husband always breaks High Ticket items and sentimental belongings by making poor choices?

He continually breaks furniture, tv sets, wrecks cars, and fails to put water and oil into them causing engines to blow , 3 cars did that in one year on him in 2005. He breaks everything! from sofas to dining chairs, plates, games, glass, doors, windows, glass smoking pieces that belong to other people, radios clocks, microwaves , the Xbox 360 etc.. The last 5 years have been hell with him. I have seen him stomp on his own glasses, run over his tool sets etc…He seems to be a great person but I think I am at my wits end. Everything in our house has been broken twice including this keyboard, and computer. All he ever sais is ” I didn’t mean to ” or ” I didn’t think that would happen”. He sometimes apologizes but often acts like it is not his carelessness that caused a problem. Help I want to scratch his eyes out! I am begining to think I am only babysitting him and I hate the stupid choices he makes.

I think you need to make some video’s of this and send it in to a home movie show… you might make some money back on his mistakes!
