For a small office, I think a flat fee ($50 to $350) is not too much. If I were the office manager/owner, I would expect an initial consultation and a formal proposal, including a drawing and paint samples, fabric samples, carpet samples, etc. I would be a very unsatisified customer if I paid $200 for a picture from a magazine paired with the suggestion to remove the current wallpaper and paint the walls blue. I think a large office would be leary to hire you because you do not have a license.

For a home, I think a rate of $15 to $25 / room for an in home consultation seems fair. I would still expect to see a semi-formal proposal or a drawing/floorplan and samples. You could also charge an hourly rate or a flat rate, depending on the homeowner. Many homeowners would be willing to pay just for a fresh perspective and for different ideas.

Just putting the lights on the tree every year. I’m a perfectionist and the cord isn’t allowed to show at all, LOL. We did candles. Our soloist went to the front and started “The Wedding Song” by Noel Paul Stookey, and while she was singing we lit our candles. I don’t know if you’ve heard the song, but it was perfect for the lighting of the candle.

If this is happening often, I suggest removing all of the bulbs and replacing them with a quality name-brand bulb. Maybe a previous owner bought some of the bulk “el-cheapo” bulbs just to fill the sockets.

As long as you are replacing bulbs, replace the ones that stay on for longer than ten or fifteen minutes with fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs produce less heat and use less electricity. If the bulb is only on for a few moments each time, then do not spend the money on the fluorescent replacements, as you gain no appreciable savings.

You need to consider this problem as very dangerous. What you describe might lead to someone receiving an electrical shock or worse.

This is really a neat thing to do if you are having a patio party. The cans really look great if you hang them all around your patio and they pull a double duty if you burn citronella candles in the lanterns.

To complete this project, you will need:

-Clean can with label removed

-Old towel

-Hammer

-Large nail

-Galvanized wire

-Pliers

Steps to Make Lanterns:

1. First get the label off the can by soaking in hot sudsy water. Then fill the can full of water and place in your freezer until the water has frozen solid, usually overnight. Then in the morning, place an old towel on a firm counter surface. Lay the tin can (which is now full of solid ice) on its side on the towel.

2. Determine, either in your mind or mark on the can, the design you want to place on the can. You don’t have to get fancy, you can put simple shapes such as crosses and spirals. The important thing is that you have holes all the way around the can. As you do this, hold the point of the nail vertically on the can and hammer with several hard hits. The ice will support the sides of the can and prevent them from bending and you should be able to make a clean hole. Continue making holes in the can until you have rotated all the way around it. While you are doing the holes, make sure you make three holes along the top of the can, preferably evenly spaced. These are the holes you will use to secure your wire hanger.

3. When you’re finished making your design on the can, let the can thaw. To make the hanger, cut three lengths of wire, each at least 12 inches long. Push one end of the wire through a hole in the top of the can, bend the end back up and twist the wire around itself to secure it. Do this with all three wires.

4. Gather the loose ends of all 3 wires together at the top and twist them together, then bend the twisted trio into a large hook so it looks like the top of a wire hanger. Then secure your candle in the can. You can use a match to heat the base of the candle so that it just barely starts to melt then press it into the bottom of the can so that it will stick. Or, if you have a hot glue gun, you can glue the candle in. Another option is to put sand in the bottom of the can and let that support your candle.

The can will work well as a nice lantern. If you want, you can always paint the can, but that won’t affect the lantern effect. When the candle is lit, the nail holes shine out like stars and a glow emerges from the top of the can. The cans look beautiful hanging in trees around the garden on a summers night. The can protects the candle from the wind and the candles will burn for hours.

How do you get wax off of a candle holder?

I have these black pillar looking candle holders that wax has dripped down on to, and I want to get all the wax off so I can use them for decor because they are pretty, how do i get all of it off?

1. Lay several layers of wet newspaper on a cookie sheet.
2. Lay the candle holder on the newspaper.
3. Bake in an oven, preferably a convection oven for 8-10 minutes at 400 degrees.
4. Remove cookie sheet from oven and pick up candle holder with a hot pad. Wax will already have been absorbed by the newspaper.
5. If the item is likely to be damaged by heat you can soften the wax with a hair dryer.

Another option is to freeze the candle holders, the wax then comes off easily.

Older strings of lights did work in parallel. The LED lights they use now hardly ever burn out (so the manufacturers claim. The claim is untrue in my opinion.

But … What about the resistance?

The series resistors require a voltage of 6 volts if there are 20 of them and you are working with a series circuit and you have 120 volts. Naturally the bulbs are all identical. If they are not, then the one with the highest resistance glows the brightest.

Let us suppose the each bulb has a power rating of 6 watts.

In a parallel resistance situation, the resistance is

V = 120 volts
P = 6 watts.
R = ????

Formula
P = V^2/R

6 = 120^2/R Cross multiply
6R = 120^2 Sqr the right side
6R = 14400
R = 2400 ohms.

Now try the same thing with the series circuit.
P = V^2/R.
P = 6 watts
V = 6 volts
Formula
P = V^2/R
6*R = 6^2
6R = 36
R = 6 ohms.

Result: The resistance of the series bulb is much smaller, BUT the current drawn is much larger. It is nearly 1 amp. See if you can get that.

The parallel circuit for the same wattage draws 0.05 amp.

Conclusion: The series circuit always has the lower resistance.

This Mother’s Day Craft for kids to make is easy and mom will love it, we know all women love candles. Because heat is involved this mother’s day craft must be done under adult supervision. Sand candles are beautiful and very easy to make. The sand you need for this mother’s day craft for kids to make can easily be obtained from the beach, a garden store or even from a toy store. Lots of toy stores keep clean sterilized sand for kid’s sand pits. For me personally, I would prefer the sand from a toy store.

This is what you need for this easy craft:

• First, of course, your sand
• Candles (enough candles so you will have enough wax for the size and amount of candles you want to make)
• Wax crayons in the colors you prefer
• A cardboard box lined with a plastic bag (so the sand will not leak out and make a mess)
• A knife
• Newspaper
• Bowl, cups or anything in the shapes you would like to make your candles
• A fork
• A spray bottle filled with water
• A saucepan for melting the candles (It is best to use an old pan you do not use anymore)

How to do your easy kids craft for mother’s day:

1. Place your sand in the lined cardboard box.
2. Spray the sand with the water until it is moist enough to hold its shape when make a hollow in it.
3. Now, using your cups, bowls or any other mold you prefer, make a hollow in the sand.
4. If you want to make more than one candle at a time you must ensure that there is at least an inch between the hollows.
5. With your knife cut off a piece of a candle to use as a wick. Remember to cut it into such shapes that a little piece of wick sticks out from the wax so you can lit the candle when you want to use it. Obviously as many wicks as you need if you are making more than one candle. If you are making large candles it is also a good idea to use more than one wick for a really pretty effect.
6. Cut up the rest of your candles into small pieces to make the melting process easier.
7. With the help of an adult, melt your pieces of candles in your old pan over a medium heat.
8. When the candles are melted, fish out the wicks with a fork. You can of course remove them before hand and save yourself this rather dangerous part of this craft.
9. Remove the papers from your crayons and add the crayons to your wax to serve as dye.
10. Now you pour the wax into the hollows you made in the sand.
11. Wait a few minutes, just until the wax starts to harden, then you put your pieces of candles that are to serve as wicks in the middle of your candle or where ever you think it will look pretty.
12. Now you have to wait until your candles have hardened completely. Small candles will take about an hour and larger ones longer. Be patient, the end result is worth the wait.
13. When your candles have hardened, gently lift out of the sand and carefully brush of all extra sand.
14. Your candles are now ready for you to wrap as mom mother’s day gift.
15. This is one of our really fun and easy mother’s day crafts for kids to make.

Oh, my! His work is absolutely gorgeous! I’m sure it is even more beautiful in person. Also, if your Dad is there in person, chatting with people about his art, I’m sure they are intrigued to meet the artist and find more meaning in the art than just from seeing it online.

If he passes out business cards with his website link and contact information to people who see his art in person, they might be more likely to go online or email or call and ask to buy more of his art, since they have already seen it and love it.

I see there are only 2 “friends” on the “MySpace” account. You have to join groups and make friends to draw traffic to your page. Also, if he builds a Facebook account as well, when he posts art on “MySpace, he would probably have the option to cross post it to Facebook as well.

He would need to join groups and make friends with people online who like his type of work. Then, he could feature a different piece each week by posting a blog about along with the picture. This would remind people to come back and check out his work. If you have a teenager in the family who is “Facebook Savy”, they could show him how to find friends and be sure people got a notice when he posts something new.

It would be good just to chat and be friendly on Facebook and MySpace as well, because the networking is as important as the posting of the art. Be sure to have prices listed with the pieces, perhaps in a blog, so people will know what to expect, and a way for them to pay for it. People need those details.

Becoming an active part of online community is a big part of making sales online. People need to “see” you and know you’re real.

Another way to increase sales… become involved with a charitable cause and offer to donate a percent of every sale to the cause. A friend of mine who paints pet portraits gives a percentage of each sales to pet charities. In exchange, they are eager to post her link and a painting on their site. She posts notices of pet charity events, animals that need homes, etc. on her site, as well as her paintings. See how it is a “give and take” situation? She really cares about the animals, so she’s glad to promote their needs, and when pet lovers see her paintings, they want her to paint a portrait of their pet, also knowing part of the money will go to support a pet charity.

Chandeliers have adorned the halls, churches and abbeys as far back as the medieval times. In these early days, they were candle chandeliers made as a wooden cross and each section had candles secured to them. They were hoisted by a rope and pulley system to a height to provide enough light and tied off in order to prevent it from falling. These candle chandeliers were one of the earliest means of providing light to a dark room.

Later a more complex form of the candle chandelier began to evolve in the form of a ring or even a crown. These designs began to become popular as a decorative piece and often were found in prestigious places such as palaces and the homes of the extravagant and wealthy. As the early forms of these candle chandeliers became popular they took on a “status symbol” of the rich. They continued to grow in popularity and by the early 18th century they were being made from ornate brass cast with various forms and curved arms in order to hold lots of candles. These candle chandeliers then found their way into the homes of many merchants.

As glassmaking evolved the candle chandeliers were adorned with the lead crystals that scattered the light the thus the crystal chandelier began taking on the more popular choice.

One of the most popular chandeliers is the chandelier from the Phantom of the Opera where of course, it was brought crashing down by the Phantom.

Today, candle chandeliers are still used though not so much for the lighting but more for the atmosphere they create. Many of the ones you find in retail outlets have the votive that holds the candles and are found in a wide range of styles, shapes, sizes and materials. One of the more popular types of today’s candle chandelier is made from iron or ornate metal and can be adorned with crystals or other decorative ornaments.

I recently had to clean a LOT of grease in my new house (I don’t think the previous occupants ever cleaned). I pretreated with vinegar – let that sit for a bit, then used citra-solve (I think that’s what it’s called?). Citra solve is basically citrus oil. It’s supposed to be diluted, but there was so much grease I mainly used full strength.

Also, you may want to scrape off a layer with a putty knife (yuck). That’s what I had to do first. Scraped right off after the vinegar pre-treat.

For making a candle, can I use cheap plastic wine glass?

If anyone lights the candle the plastic will probably melt and start a fire. I would stick with using something made from glass to be on the safe side.

Okay kids, take a tin of custard powder, open the lid and place it inside a larger tin with a sealable lid. Make a hole in the tin can and place a tube through until it touches the custard inside the tin. Now place a candle inside the tin, quickly seal the lid then blow through the tube: kaboom, the lid should have flown off as the custard ignited.

Science teachers love this kind of experiment; it keeps kids engaged whilst demonstrating some important principles of science. Yet, if a group of kids can make a tin of custard explode, just think of the potential explosive power in factories that use tons of it. Not just custard either, most powdered foodstuffs, such as sugar, spices, flour and even coffee can explode.

Of course there are laws implemented to ensure that risk of explosions are kept to a minimum but how many companies actually follow them? In Britain the EU’s ATEX directive was introduced in 2003 to ensure companies were aware of the risks attached with explosive materials.

Yet, according to industry analysts, many food producers, particularly smaller companies, are wither completely unaware of the risks or are ignoring them.

“If the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) decided to crackdown I think they will find a lot of non-compliance,” said David Mairs, from leading project management company Projen.

Even when companies do take pains to ensure they meet the desired requirements often certain items can get missed, the most common being the computer equipment.

Obviously, computers, monitors and printers are electrical and can spark (particularly in dusty environments where the dust itself can short circuit boards), yet many companies neglect to ensure their IT is approved to use in that area. The most common reason for this neglect is put down to cost.

Obviously replacing all IT systems with intrinsically safe and air-purged machines can be extremely expensive, especially if you are in the habit of upgrading your IT on a regular basis.

However, there are lower priced alternatives. One way is to house all IT equipment into special industrial computer enclosures. These are widely available and can be manufactured in all materials including food-grade stainless steel. They have the advantage of not only preventing any fault in a computer or monitor from setting light to your factory but they also afford protection from knocks, bangs and explosions. They also have the advantage over specialist machines by the fact that enclosures merely house existing equipment which can be replaced and repaired whilst still retaining your original industrial pc enclosure.

‘Old man,’ they call me now, capped with a receding hairline, a few white hairs, here and there, a drought, rising inside my brain, knotted muscles everywhere; once unimaginable, now like vapor clouds in my eyes. I see my Mother in that old sofa chair, she’s saying, “I never expected to live so long,” how strange it seems now; I’m singing the same old song (I guess I’m there).

My saga is hammering out, I live in a labyrinthine circle, with deep roots: my bones, knuckles, shoulders, chromosomes, breaking down; dreams not worth much anymore: they come during darkness and vanish by dawn. I even have a grimace on my face, like the cool breeze from the sea.

I see everywhere the new breed: with computers above their knees, a cup of coffee by their side, not much life in their eyes.

Note: Being a Meat packerÂ’s son, my mother liked to come home from work sit around the kitchen, tell me of all the gossip going on, down at the South St. Paul (Minnesota) stockyards (the slaughterhouse, it was known as). I worked their one summer, back in 1967, sheÂ’d come and wake me up at my apartment on Seventh Street, bring me to work, she was proud I was working there. I would come in late and all that kind of bad behavior, and sheÂ’d stick up for me with the bosses, have her boyfriend who worked there talk to them; thus I kept my job for the summer. But that was it.

How do I get a burnt smell out of my room?

I lit a small votive candle on my shelf, well apparently the shelf is unlevel and the wax leaked off. It leaked on my alarm clock, was hanging off of my shelf like an icecicle, and dripped on my carpet. My whole room smells like burned berries. Help?

I’m guessing at this but, scrape off the wax from the carpet or use a low-heat iron and paper towel to absorb the wax. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet to absorb odor, and if you can, wash any curtains, bed linens and such and use some febreeze. Hope you find something that works!

You’ll want to burn these darling homemade candles yourself and give them as gifts as well.

Use this craft technique as a teaching moment with your kids. Before you start making the candles, talk to your kids about safety. They’ll need to know that the crayons will have to be melted using a very high heat, and they will not be able to do that particular step in the process. Tell them they will have other fun steps in making crayon candles.

Get your supplies together. Along with about six crayons, you’ll need a wax container of some sort such as an empty milk or orange juice wax carton, one pound of paraffin wax, two full ice cube trays, a double boiler, white packing string. If you’re hesitant to use your double boiler to melt the crayons and wax, an old coffee can and saucepan works great.

First, trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high. Next, cut the string at least 8 inches long and later cut the wick to fit the holder. Braid the three string pieces together to make a wick that burns easier. Melt the paraffin wax in the double boiler or coffee can. To help it melt faster, cut it into small chunks. Usually you’ll need to allow about 20 minutes for the melting process to complete.

Get your kids involved with the crayon candle making fun by letting them remove the crayon wrappers from the crayons while the wax is melting. Be creative by mixing and matching the crayon colors to create your own pretty candle.

Most folks find that they get the best results if they wait and add the crayons to the wax after it’s totally melted. Use a pair of scissors and dip the string into the paraffin. Dipping the string will make sure it’s coated with paraffin because the ice cubes may make it hard for the wax to stick to the string. Hold the string so that it is in the middle of the carton and fill the carton with ice cubes. Pour wax mixture over the ice cubes. You can even add a touch of scent to your crayon candle by adding a little cinnamon or vanilla to the hot wax.

Once you have poured your candle, make sure your kids know the importance of leaving it alone to harden. The candle will usually set in about half an hour, but leave it alone for a couple of hours and until the ice is melted. Put the candle in an area that is safe and where it will not be bothered. Be sure the little ones know they could be burned if they touch the hot wax before it’s cooled. The wax can stay hot for hours after pouring and can be a potential hazard to kids and animals. When you’re ready, all you have to do then is pour off the melted water and then peel off the wax carton.

No, but it is usually the best way to work.. I do this type of work a couple of times a month, as part of larger projects. What I have learned is not only is it true that time is money, but it is also important to consider who’s time we are using. Assuming that you are paying people to do the work, the rates of pay for the electrician and the guy who strips the ceiling are vastly different. By stripping the ceiling, you allow the electrician to get in and out as quickly as is possible. By giving the wallboard crew a whole ceiling to install, rather than patch, you get a better job, for about the same money. Remember, if you try to work through the existing ceiling, you have to guess where the joists are. Sooner or later, you will guess wrong, and have to patch that hole. Sometimes one joist can throw off a whole line of lighting, requiring all the holes to be redone and all the old ones patched.

Gel candle wax is one of the most exciting products to arrive on the market for candle makers in a long while. Gel wax is made from a combination of mineral oil and polymer resin. When the resin is mixed into the mineral oil, a solid jelly is formed, and that is the gel candle wax. This gel can then be heated to melting and poured into containers for candles. It must reach temperatures of around 200F degrees, so use caution with this wax.

Gel can be bought in different densities – high, medium and low. The difference in density determines its usability. High density gel wax can support decorations suspended in it better. It’s downside is it is more difficult to pour, and takes longer to meld or set. Gel candles must always be made and kept in a container, since the when the wax sets it looks and feels like jelly, so needs to be supported. Make sure the container can take the high heat of the liquid gel.

The containers for gel candles can be of any material that can take the high heat of the melted wax. Clear glass containers are most commonly used, since the gel is clear, and can be colored in attractive and interesting ways. Gel candles, with their clear wax, can hold inserts such as small seashells, colored glass bits, pieces of dried fruit, seeds and so on. Because of this clear characteristic, gel candles are quite spectacular.

Gel wax made into shapes are available in the marketplace, and with them you can make totally unique candles. Your choices are varied – from grape-shaped and colored gel pieces to simple rectangular chunks. It is also possible to make your own colored chunks or pieces to use. Simply melt the gel wax, following the manufacturer’s directions, add the color, pour into a flat tray with sides, and allow to cool and set. When cold, you can easily cut it into chunks to use by pressing down onto the gel with a sharp knife.

Use these pre-made gel shapes and chunks to make an interesting gel candle. First, glue the wick (with sustainer attached) to the base of your glass container. Now, add a layer of gel chunks into the container. Pour in liquefied gel wax in a contrasting or complementing color to fill in the gaps between the chunks. Add another layer of gel chunks, and repeat. When the container is filled to within a quarter inch of the top, it is complete. After the gel has cooled and set, trim the wick, and your candle is ready to use.

Gel wax can be used like other waxes – melted and poured into a container, where it cools and makes a simple container candle. It must be melted to 200F degrees, over direct heat. You can also use an electric pot with its own heating element and temperature control. Because of the high temperature required to melt it, always have a fire extinguisher near by. Pour the wax carefully into the heat-proof container, to just within a half inch from the top, and while it is still molten, add some glitter for effect. Stir gently, so no bubbles form. If you pour the wax at a faster rate into the container it will have a bubbly ocean water feel. When the candle is cool, snip off the wick to a quarter inch.

Which ever method you use to make your gel candles, pay careful attention to safety, and wash after you make your candles, as the wax gel is slightly toxic. Never burn a gel candle down right to the container bottom, as the heat may cause the container to crack or break, and allow hot liquid gel to flow out. With this gel wax, you will have gorgeous container candles to enjoy, and even to gift to friends and family, or who knows – start your own business!

You can put the jar in the oven at its lowest temp (like 200-250) and the wax will melt all the way and then you can carefully remove the jar from the oven (with potholders) and pour the wax out. Wipe out with warm damp paper towel. I do this a lot! Good luck!
