In colonial times, candle making was an essential annual chore in all households. Home made taper candles were the only source of light for people’s homes, and there were no commercial candles available as there are today. Each household made its own candles, usually once a year. The average household needed around 400 candles a year, so this was a huge job.

Since the candles were made from tallow, or animal fat, this event usually coincided with the autumn slaughter of animals for meat. Tallow could be made from the fat of all farm animals, but that from sheep tallow was the most desirable. Pig tallow had a very bad smell, and was used by people who could not afford either beef or sheep tallow.

The earliest settlers made their candles by the dipping method. A wick of cotton was dipped repeatedly into the melted tallow, with time to cool and harden between dips. This made a taper candle. These home made candles did not burn very well, emitted odors, and the light was poor.

Those who could afford beeswax had candles from that wax. These were generally rolled from sheets of beeswax, and had a sweet honey smell. Beeswax was not very available, it was expensive, and only the very rich could afford to use candles made from it as a daily way of lighting their homes.

Some colonists found that they could make a wax from bayberries, which have a waxy coating. They boiled the berries, and the wax was skimmed from the top. This was a source of pleasant smelling wax, but there were some drawbacks. Huge numbers of berries were needed – about 15 pounds of bayberries were needed to make just one pound of bayberry wax! Since time was often at a premium for colonial women, this was not an efficient way to make candles. Also, the resulting candles were quite soft, and did not keep well in hot weather.

In the late 1700’s, whaling became an important industry in the Eastern part of America, and spermaceti (a waxy substance from the whale’s head) was found to make much better candles. This wax was harder than either tallow, beeswax or bayberry wax. The candles burned longer and brighter, and stood up to summer heat much better. They were quite expensive,

Around the same time, candle makers started to use wooden molds to make candles. This important innovation allowed candles to be made much faster, and the candles were uniformly shaped. Some candle makers would travel around, taking their molds and equipment, and making candles for people. Others set up a candle making business in one location, and sold their candles.

In the early 1800’s paraffin was first made from coal tar, and around 1850, it became commercially viable, when James Young filed a patent to produce it from coal, which was extensively mined in the eastern states. Paraffin was used to make candles of high quality, and along with the new machines that could make 1500 candles an hour, they became inexpensive and widely available.

Although they are no longer the major source of light for our homes, candles have grown in popularity and use in recent times. For many of us, candles are lit to mark celebrations; they symbolize romance, scented ones soothe our senses, and decorative candles accent our homes, where they cast a warm and mysterious glow for us to enjoy.

How do you anchor the bottom of a candle wick when pouring a candle?

I use a pencil to tie the top of the wick off, but the wick bases I have aren’t heavy enough to keep the wick taught. The wick isn’t centered down the middle of the candle.

There are little tabs you can buy that you thread the wick through. Then you place a blob of wax on the bottom, put the tab into that, and then make the wick taught and pour.

Gel candle making has enjoyed a surge in popularity in the past few years. It is easier than traditional candle making, requiring few ingredients and some simple instructions. The hardest decisions are ones based on personal taste: what kind of container do you want to use, do you want to add color to your gel and what scent do you want to use.

Gel wax has greatly changed the world of candle making. With its transparency the possibilities are limited only by your imagination and the speed with which it sets makes producing large numbers of candles less time consuming than with traditional candles.

Making gel candles uniquely individual is one of the most appealing aspects of the process. The only thing that has to be taken into consideration is that containers must be used, unless of course the time is taken to make unique molds as well.

Gel candles can be made using seashells from vacations, coins from travels around the world, even beer cap collections can be used to make personalized candles. They can be tinted using dyes and scented using fragrant oils.

Materials

Before you begin making the candles you need to assemble your materials. The most expensive part of the process is the gel wax itself. You will need:

• Gel wax
• Glass containers – use your imagination, shot glasses, martini glasses, fish bowls;
• Fragrant oils – if you want to add scent;
• Dye – if you want your candles colored;
• Wick – the length of which is determined by the height of your container; use wax coated wicks for gel candles, not paper wicks.
• Décor for putting in the candle if desired.

You should also have a pot or kettle to melt and pour the gel from. Camping equipment is an excellent place to find a sturdy kettle to use. It will stand up to the repeated heating.

Making Your Candles

First you need to make sure that your containers are very clean and dry. Any residue or foreign materials that remain inside the container can cause your gel wax not to set properly.

You will need to melt you gel; however, you must keep an eye on the gel as it is melting as it can reach its flash point very quickly and be on fire before you know it. Using a thermometer is the best way to insure that you don’t exceed the recommended temperature. Also, do not under any circumstances whatsoever melt the gel in the microwave, it is very dangerous.

If you are going to color your gel you can do this after the gel has melted. Test the color by pouring a small spoon of it on a sheet of white paper, if the color is darker than you want it, add more gel, if it is lighter than you want it, add more dye.

This is also the time to add fragrant oil if you want to make scented candles. Again, add more if you aren’t satisfied with the odor and if it has too much smell add more gel to the mix.

You are now ready to position your wick. The method you use will depend on how precise you want your candles to be. If you are giving them for gifts and don’t want bubbles, you will want to use the pencil method. If you are making them for yourself and don’t mind some bubbles use the easier, hot glue method.

The hot glue method entails using hot glue to secure the wick to the bottom center of the container. As the wax is poured in, it will react with the glue and cause some bubbles.

The pencil method requires filling the container with wax, dipping the wick in the wax, removing the excess wax from the wick and rolling it around a pencil. Position the pencil over the container with the wick in the center and dropping it down into the gel. When the gel cools cut the wick no longer than 1/4 inch.

If you are adding embellishments to your gel candle you should dip them in wax and arrange them in the container before you pour the wax in the container. You should also arrange them closer to the outer edge to make them visible.

Step One: Start by turning off the power to the fixture’s circuit at the service panel.

Step Two: When you remove the fixture base on a wall or ceiling-mounted fixture, or the cover plate on a strip fluorescent fixture, test the wiring to verify that the power is indeed off. Probe each set of insulated wires with one lead of a neon tester and the metal box or grounding wire with the other. If the tester lights, the power is still on.

Step Three: Remove the screws or cap nuts that secure a globe or glass light shade.

Step Four: Remove the screws or cap nuts that secure the fixture, fixture body or canopy to the outlet box. Support the full weight of a heavy fixture during this step and the next. Get help for a heavy one, especially if you are working overhead from a ladder.

Step Five: With the wiring in the outlet box now accessible, repeat the power test described in step 2. When you’ve confirmed that there’s no power in the outlet box, remove the wire connectors that join the fixture wires to the house. If the fixture body is grounded, remove the screw or nut that secures the grounding (green) wire.

Step Six: You must secure fixtures that weigh over 50 lbs. (23 kg) independently of the electrical box. If you have access from above, install wood bridging between the joists above the box. Then screw the box into the bridging from below. If you don’t have access to install a support from above, purchase retrofit mounting hardware for a ceiling fan and install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step Seven: Compare new mounting-hole requirements with the existing provisions at the outlet box. If necessary, purchase a new mounting strap or a universal mounting plate, which will accommodate virtually any fixture.

Step Eight: Connect the new fixture to the same wires that connected the old fixture, and mount the fixture to the box with screws or cap nuts as required. Create a loop in the wires with long-nose pliers, then wrap them clockwise under a terminal screw. Or use electrician’s pliers to twist the wires from a prewired fixture together with the house wires, then secure them with wire nuts. Cut off excess with wire cutters.

As most people know, chrome is most seen in the kitchen and in the bathroom.  You will more than likely see chrome in the fixtures in the bathroom or the sink itself will be chrome.  If you don’t like the dull look of chrome in your bathroom, try adding a black wooden mirror frame that will compliment the chrome.

Makeshift candlestick holder?

Hey people, does anyone have any ideas for a homemade candlestick holder? I’m thinking of play-do at the moment, but it wouldn’t look too classy. I don’t have any empty wine bottles.

Fruit works well and arranged right can make a very nice centerpiece too. Just use a paring knife to remove enough pulp to set the candle firmly in it. You can also skin the bottom to make it level and arrange on a large plater with other fruits and foliage added as accents.

With etching cream, you definitely need a stencil.
If you have the time and a real steady hand, you can do the following:
• Write out what you want to stencil in a pretty font on your computer and print it out. Try not to get real intricate, because this process includes cutting out the letters.
• Take it to a Kinko’s or other full-service copy shop and have it transferred to clear acetate.
• Cut out the black areas in the acetate with an X-acto or thin hobby knife. Ta-da! You have a stencil.

I just did some of these a few days ago. I placed the candle holders in a pot of water that reached about 1/2 the height of the holder and brought it just to a low boil. Took it off the burner and in just minutes the wax in the holder was melted away from the sides and poured right out.

If you want to send out a unique Halloween invitation, why not make one yourself? Cost-efficient and eye-catching cards are made with cheap materials, ones you could buy from the corner store. This includes cards, thread, crayons, and even candles!

A unique Halloween invitation would involve the use of less than conventional materials. For example, have you thought about using candle wax? Candles have been associated with the Halloween season since the olden days. Nowadays you could buy candles that are shaped like familiar Halloween figures, such as the Jack-o-lantern (you don’t need to carve a pumpkin, if your candle is already shaped like one!), a witch’s broomstick, or a small bat.

But you don’t need fancy candles to make a cost-efficient Halloween invitation. A regular old red candle will do. Light the candle and allow it to melt a bit, then place some drops of red wax onto a spot on the front of the card. Let it dry. This would make it look like a few drops of blood have been left on the card, as a sort of “calling card” from beyond!

Feel free to shape the drops of wax anyway you want. You could make the drops in the shape of a familiar Halloween motif, such as a pumpkin or a bat, and use candles that are of other colors besides red. Black and orange candles should be easier to find in shops this season.

Just make sure that your card is hard enough to hold the wax! Flimsy sorts of paper, such as thin book paper, is not recommended for this technique. And of course, you should be careful not to leave lit candles unattended. These could be the cause of tragic fire-related accidents. Be careful also not to get hot melted wax onto your skin. Don’t allow children to play with melted wax without adult supervision, or to try and make wax decorations on their own!

Another way to use wax in order to make a unique Halloween invitation is to buy liquid wax (or solid blocks of wax for making homemade candles) and aluminum molds. Molds that are flat on one or both sides could create not only gorgeous candles, but fun giveaways as well! You could pour wax into the mold and make wax figurines, like cats or bats – they don’t have to be turned into candles if you don’t want them to. Simply fill in the molds solidly with wax, and forego adding the wicks. Make sure to observe safety precautions, and to closely follow the instructions on the molds and the liquid wax, if there are any!

Once the wax has cooled, place the figurine on top of a piece of paper. Trace the edges and cut out the piece of paper that will fit exactly on top of the flat side of your wax figurine. You can then write or paste on that piece of paper the details for your Halloween invitation. This is definitely a unique Halloween invitation idea that your guests would want to safekeep!

I’ve been looking for the irresistible Voluspa candles everywhere and haven’t been able to find them. I received the Cardamon Fig as a gift a few months ago. I know they can be found in certain shops in CA and NY, but I live in Okla. and the only place for me to get to them is online. I tried to get them cheap on ebay, but I had an experience from hell with the seller and ended up empty-handed. So, if anyone knows of any known boutique or store that sells them, I’ll greatly appreciate the information.

Campfire Fruit Cobbler

1 cab of fruit (cherries or blueberries)
1 white cake mix
1 empty 34.5 ounce coffee can

Grease coffee can with butter or margarine. Pour can of fruit into the coffee can. Make cake mix as instructed on the box. Pour the batter into the coffee can on top of the fruit. Cover with aluminum foil and place into the campfire approx. 30 min. When the cake looks done, mix, stirring the fruit up from the bottom. Very tasty!!!

To make one, anything that is extremely light (tissue paper) will work, and then use bamboo strips or wire to hold the heat source at the bottom so it does not catch the “skin” on fire. Here is a Youtube video at random:

If you are talking about the Japanese, originally it was floating lanterns on water for the Obon Festival, the Japanese buddhist festival of the dead (the day to honor your dead ancestors who are thought to come back home during Obon). There are a lot of traditional ceremonies, such as participatory dancing around a central platform (”Bon Odori”), food offerings (fruit, manju..a formal japanese dessert made with sweetened rice flour and filled with sweet azuki beans) to the ancestors in the home shrine, and “Toro Nagashi” which is the tradition of launching a floating paper lantern with a candle onto the water, usually a river that flows into the sea. The ritual is to help ancestors return back to the spirit world at the end of Obon. In the USA, Hawaii is the best state to experience Obon festivals (particularly Honolulu) followed by states on the west coast. The floating lantern ceremony has also been expanded to honor the dead on other occasions, such as Memorial Day in Honolulu. To make one, a thin, flat piece of styrofoam, tissue or rice paper and four thin stakes, write ancestor name with message on lantern and voila your done!

there is a room there with red walls, pink dresser and a silver heart on the wall if you scroll thru the rooms. the title of the room is “room for dreams”. you could have a red accent wall and place your bed against that wall then put a furry white rug or two by your bed. you could make the cute mirror that is in the picture yourself by adding jewels or small round stickers from the craft store around the outer edge of a full length mirror. if you add the jewels to the mirror surface ask them at the craft store cuz i think you need a special kind of glue. but i think you could do this room for a pretty cheap price. the white comforter with red flowers( or look for a white one with pink flowers) is available on ebay and the lamps, curtains, rugs and the hooks that they made the heart shape out of are at ebay too. then just add a simple white table as a night stand with a couple of red storage totes for your stuff. it’s a super cute room:)
