I’ve been thinking about the placement of wall candle holders for some time now. There are so many applications for these beautiful candle holding wall sconces. With the addition of these wall candles, to places on your walls that already have some form of art or decoration, you can enhance the beauty of each and every room in your home or office. So join me in exploring all the possible applications these wall candles have in order to turn ordinary rooms into magnificent surroundings.

I will start out by asking you if you have any wall mirrors in your home other than in your bathroom? By placing a wall candle holder on each side of your wall mirror, you add a classic touch of beauty that was not there before.

If you have some walls in your home that are small, you can add one or two wall candle holders to these depending on the size of the wall sconce you wish to use. An example of this is the small section of wall I have between my living room and dining room. On this wall I have applied 2 medium size wrought iron candle holders that are each capable of holding one pillar candle 3 inches in diameter. I have the candle holder on the left about 5 inches higher on the wall than the candle holder on the right. This adds an artful appearance to a wall that would normally be left empty.

I have a fireplace in my living room. My fireplace is built into the wall. Above the fireplace is a mantle. Above the mantle is a normal painted wall. On the wall above the fireplace is a framed art print. I chose to put up a wall candle holder on each side of this framed art print. Now let me talk about candle holder wall sconces and bedroom décor. One of the most beautiful bedroom decorations I ever put my eyes across was at the home of one of my friends. In the master bedroom was dark oak bedroom furniture. The headboard of the bed (King size) was also beautifully carved dark oak. The headboard was up against the middle of the wall on one side of the room. Above the headboard was a beautiful contemporary tapestry (about 5′ tall by 7′ long) hanging on the wall. On each side of the tapestry was a wall sconce candle holder. These wall candle holders had to be 24 inches tall, made out of brushed pewter. The pewter candle holders matched the rod that held the tapestry on the wall. I’m telling you this looked stunning!

When it comes to tapestries, no matter what the size, if there is room for a wall candle holder on each side, then put them there. It just adds a touch of magic to the room décor.

Hanging a Wall Candle Holder!!!! Help!?

I bought two wall mounted candleholders and they didn’t come with any hooks. I don’t know what to hang them with. They seem to be to thick for picture frame hooks and where I want to hang them there is no wall stud. They are heavy. Any advice please thanks!

GO to home depot and get a couple of toggle bolt wall anchors- then you just drill a hole, install the anchors, then you can hang your candle holders!

Beeswax candle making is one of the most enjoyable of the candle making projects that you could engage in. Beeswax is a soft wax that is wonderful for making both rolled candles and dipped candles. The wax comes in both block and sheet form and is easy to find at any craft store. The nice thing about the sheet beeswax is that it is idea for making candles with young toddlers, as there is no melting the hot wax.

Aside from the beeswax and the wick, there are no other supplies you need, with the exception of an old coffee can and a big pot to bowl water. You will also need a metal spoon for stirring and a candy thermometer. Gather up all your materials before you start.

How to make beeswax candles:

The first thing you need to do is measure the wick the length you would like each candle to be. Double the wick and include a few extra inches.

Place water in a large pot big enough to add the coffee can and place it on the stove to boil. The beeswax will come in a block. Break the block into smaller chucks and place the pieces into the coffee can. Once the water has boiled place the coffee can in the water and turn the heat to medium. Stir the wax constantly while it is melting.

Once the wax has melted take your wick and double it over your fingers. Take the wick and dip it into the melted beeswax. Dip quickly the first time. Raise the wick from the melted wax and allow a few minutes to dry. Then, dip again. Allow a few minutes to allow the candle to drip and cool and then dip for the last time. Hang the candles over a closet bar or place a dowel between two spaces to form an area for drying the candles.

Take the next wick, and dip in the same manner as the first set of candles. Hang this batch and dip another set. By the time you finish dipping all the beeswax sets that you intend to make, than take the very first set that you made and start the process over. You may decide to have different thickness.

After a few hours of cooling, you will have the enjoyment of beautiful beeswax candles, which will fill your home with a wonderful aroma! To store the beeswax candles, simply place the candles in a drawer and close the drawer! There are no special requirements, and they will have the contents in the drawer smelling wonderful.

Tips:

• Once the beeswax has melted, keep the wax on the lowest temperature on the stove as you will continue to work with it and need the wax to be soft.

• Also, place newspaper below the area that you will be hanging your candles from. This will help with cleanup.

• Always keep young children out of the area when working with the hot wax.

What would be the best way to package a yankee candle or candle crock pot for shipping?

I want to send my friend one of these items in the mail. Has anyone mailed either before without them getting broken? If so, I could use some help with packing ideas. Thanks :0)

I have shipped an entire household worth of breakable china, glass figures, etc. PLUS glass jar candles, cross-country on the Greyhound Bus! Believe you me, I have become an expert at shipping breakables without having them break.

Buy your Yankee or crockpot candle, and find an old clean BATH TOWEL you do not need anymore, or grab a pretty new one as an extra bonus gift for your friend. Fold the bath towel in half lengthwise, so it makes a long thin strip. Lay the candle down on one end of the towel, then roll it up so the the candle is deep inside the towel…when you’ve finished rolling it, seal the towel to itself with a strip of packing tape…it comes off quite easily…or use any other tape that will stick well and not leave residue on the towel.

Now…find yourself a box that has about 2″ to 3″ of space all the way around that towel/candle bundle…you likely are going to wind up with a box that has more room on two sides, less on the other two…make SURE that the two closest sides give you at LEAST 3″ leeway…then fill with tightly wadded newspaper and jam it in there GOOD and tight, so that the candle has NO wobble room at all. If you like, you could substitute packing peanuts, but still you will need to pack them in there real tight so the towel-candle unit cannot move.

Seal the box well with packaging/mailing tape, address your mailing labels, put them on, and with a WIDE TIPPED PERMANENT BLACK MARKER print “FRAGILE PLEASE HANDLE WITH EXTREME CARE” on every side of that box.

Now, take it to your post office, and when mailing it, INSURE IT for the cost of all the contents PLUS a few bucks (to cover the initial cost of mailing). You usually won’t need to cash in that insurance, because your item SHOULD arrive unbroken and totally safe. I did not have ANY breakage in my stuff when I packed it this way. My grandmother and mom taught me to pack glass in towels like that. Works every time for me.

If anyone lights the candle the plastic will probably melt and start a fire. I would stick with using something made from glass to be on the safe side.

Just on a quick search on-line for bulk vases I found Dollar Tree has an on-line location for ordering vases. I looked up “ivy bowl” which is 5 3/4 inches tall. Not quite so wide, but it’s bowl shape is perfect for a centerpiece and it has a slight neck so flowers won’t just fall out like they tend to do in plain bubble bowls or cubes. (Otherwise, a 5 x 5 vase would actually be a cube, which are also popular, but much harder to arrange in, believe me.)
Dollar Tree site advertises a box of 12 ivy bowls (or any number of vase types) for $12.00. ($1.00 apiece.) I doubt you’ll find anything much lower. (I didn’t check shipping costs.)

There are special glues you can get at craft stores that are made to stick permenantly to glass. I’m sure that he did not go into the woods and rip bark off a live tree though. He probably got it off dead trees or went to a mulch store (or even places that split fire wood) and asked if they had any.

I would get some glue and twigs and bark and glue it onto the vase. Make sure you have bark and twigs that are close to the same texture and color so it doesnt look like you made a camoflauge log.

I think you color choices are good, I’d make the mocha color a bit lighter, with all those bold dark colors you could end up with them competing for attention and you could end up making a room look smaller than it really is, espeically if you don’t have a lot of big windows for natural light. You could also through in some cranberry accents in the form of throw pillows/blankets or candles in you candle holders. Make sure the fabric of of your curtains matches the fabric of you other furniture in style. I.E. don’t sheer light curtains if all the fabric is heavier, it will look out of place.

Also, never, ever trust the light in a paint store! It will look completely different in the light in your home than at the store! Take some sample home, cut them up and tape them on the wall and put them near your couch, chair, carpet/floor etc. Some paint companies offer inexpensive 2 oz samples in thier most popular colors. You can paint a 2×2 section with that and really see what it will look like. I’ve had many guests in my paint department who were so grateful for that because they loved the color in the store and hated it on the wall. 3 bucks for a sample verses 20 plus dollars for a gallon of paint you hate is a big difference. And most places won’t take back mixed paint.

It’s really not something that we think about too often. What happens when the auto glass repair job we had done isn’t done properly? For a car owner, we simply yank someone out of the phone book or call someone with a catchy jingle that we heard once and tell them our needs and hand over our keys. What happens next is not known to us and we tend to keep it that way.

In our own self imposed ignorance, we simply expect that the auto glass repair company will do the job and we get our car back later that day. Most of us are more concerned with getting a replacement inspection sticker to avoid getting pulled over than we are about the work that was done.

Upon basic inspection, it is difficult to discern whether the window repair was done correctly or not. It looks like it fits, it looks clean and new, and so off we go back into our world with our newest inconvenience taken care of for the day. Auto glass repair is not that simple, and there have been numerous places in Dallas, the surrounding areas, and other parts of the country who have been infiltrated with under par window replacement issues. The consequences can range from annoying to life threatening, and we the public are none the wiser.

The Dallas area has a high incidence of such insufficient window replacement simply due to the large number of glass companies in the area. Just like a town with too many hot dog stands, the bad hot dogs are bound to rear their ugly heads more often simply because there are more of them. Dallas hot dog stands are doing fine, the glass companies are now finding exactly where they stand on the quality scale.

Glass companies that return vehicles without a basic standard of safety are risking more than a leaky windshield. Windshields that leak are annoying and they are also a precursor to a large-scale problem waiting to occur under just the right circumstances. Window repair is not a simple project. Companies that lack the resources to properly train their employees, pay employees just enough to retain the good ones.

They lack the knowledge themselves in order to pass it onto their employees. Which risks their client’s lives with every slap dash window repair job that gets through. The general public of course, is impatient, requesting their vehicle is cared for now and without delay.

Glass companies also want to make their customers happy and offer them a speedy service that may or may not cave in on them. Glass companies must be willing to stand up and explain to the general public that a good window repair job is necessary and that they need to be patient. If the job is done correctly, customers need to wait about an additional 30 minutes on average.

Auto glass repair jobs that fail to do a good job create the most dangerous of situations. Of course, they don’t fail while your car is happily parked in the lot on a clear sunny day with no one behind the wheel. Rather, they fail in high winds on stormy nights, causing cuts and vision impairment on highways and overpasses.

They fail in the car wash, allowing burning hot water and wax to infiltrate the car and cause severe damage to skin, eyes, and of course the interior of the car. They fail while people are driving, causing nasty accidents and damages to both vehicles and humans along the way. It is rare that glass companies can even be held accountable after the fact, as the accidents that follow are more than enough to tear the remains of the windshield apart, leaving behind a tattered vehicle and the people that were riding in it.

Auto glass repair businesses are not a place for slap dash handy work and rush jobs, but window replacement takes a real skill and education in attaining that real skill. Of course, we want our cars back as soon as possible and we want to just go about our day without having to be bothered with the annoyance of a broken windshield. Unfortunately, it is up to the glass companies in Dallas and elsewhere to determine for us that they know what is best when it comes to the safety of our windshield. We ask them to fix it, and we hope they realize the great responsibility of window replacement.

Yesterday, we had a candle maker visit our warehouse to talk with us about planning her 2009 glass and candle supplies purchases. Although her business grew over 100% in 2008 after the launch of a new lotion candle collection consisting of several Libbey apothecary and status jars, she claimed that she has been unable to take money out of her business. Further, she told me that she is unsure whether she made a profit. When I asked her about whether she understood what a balance sheet or income statement was, she said, “what do you mean?”

Based in the northeast, she runs a solid direct-to-consumer candle business which includes both short and long term leases at several malls, mall kiosks and trade shows. I spent some time crunching numbers for her so that she could take a hard look at her cost of goods (for turning glass jars into a finished candle) and selling expenses (direct expenses related to her ability to get in front of consumers). What I found surprised me: her gross margin exceeded 70% on product.

After pressing her for more information, I discovered why she was not profitable. I found that she overexposed herself to contingent liabilities such as strict lock-in periods and profit “riders” in her lease agreements with landlords. In addition to forcing her to maintain payroll during slow selling periods, the profit “rider” clause cost her almost a third of her gross sales. When combined with rent, processing fees and labor, her selling expenses accounted for more than twice her cost of goods. This greatly concerned me, as it reduced her actual operating margin to less than 15%. I immediately put together a simple P&L and balance sheet so she could understand what was happening to her money.

The truth is that she has very strong cash flow due to the nature of her direct-to-consumer model, fast turn rates, just-in-time inventory and ultra low costs of goods, i.e., the glass jars and candle supplies she buys in bulk to make her candles. As such, it is unlikely that she would go out of business unless foot traffic is incredibly low. What’s more, the glass jars that she selected for her line are selling extremely well. Her customers are value-oriented candle users that are looking to get the best deal for the highest quality: her soy lotion candles have a two-in-one value packed in modern and unique Libbey jars that give them outstanding shelf appeal. The result is that her candles easily compete with overpriced mall alternatives.

Subsequently, I realized that she neither had quality, marketing or sales problems and no issues with cash flow or cost of goods. Her problems were as follows: (1) she failed to negotiate acceptable terms with her vendors, (2) she doesn’t understand her true selling expenses and (3) she isn’t pursuing a wholesale model to avoid or mitigate liabilities.

I’ve found that retail is a great “opener” to build your brand and customer base, but at the end of the day adding a wholesale component is essential. This would involve giving up some gross product margin, but this would be immediately offset by reduced selling expenses. In addition, working with retailers and sales reps expands your footprint through multiple sales channels simultaneously, without taking on any liabilities. While product margins may end up lower, net margin – your actual profit – will be significantly higher. Based on my initial assessment? Adding a wholesale component would put 35% in her pocket!

they are hurricane vases and i only pane to put one taper candle in each one, but i don’t want them to fall over.

In all honesty both will hold up fine. It really depends on which appeals visually to you more. I’ve made more centerpieces than I care to remember and have never had an issue with either holding up candles.

Of course sand is messier, but it holds up the candle just fine. You can even wet the sand if you are really worried about it and push the candle down into the sand a little bit for some extra support.

Pebbles are easier to work with and look really nice, you’d have to wiggle the candle around a little bit once you set it in the vase just so it’s flat, but there won’t be any issues in the candle falling over after that. Well, if someone knocks the vase over obviously the candle would move (ha ha) but that is true no matter what you use as a base.

Just use whichever works best with your theme

If you have the time and a real steady hand, you can do the following:
• Write out what you want to stencil in a pretty font on your computer and print it out. Try not to get real intricate, because this process includes cutting out the letters.
• Take it to a Kinko’s or other full-service copy shop and have it transferred to clear acetate.

Any advice on how to get out old candle wax out of an old glass candle holder?

I have several old glass candleholders that at one time did contain a short pillar candle. I’d like to resurrect them to use again, but there is old candle wax in the bottom and it’s too deep for me to get at easily. I thought about putting them in the microwave to melt the wax so I could pour it out, but there are remnants of metal wicks in the bottom and metal in the microwave is a no-no. Has anyone ever successfully done this, and if so, how? These holders are really pretty and have sentimental value, so I’d like to preserve them. They’re gorgeous when they’re lit.

I just did some of these a few days ago. I placed the candle holders in a pot of water that reached about 1/2 the height of the holder and brought it just to a low boil. Took it off the burner and in just minutes the wax in the holder was melted away from the sides and poured right out.

Your solution would be to purchase swag light kits. They come in a number of lengths to be able to a proper swag from location to plug. The kits include chain, cord, loop, on and off switch to attach to the cord if desired, and hooks to swag your fixture. What you will need will be sockets(ceramic would be best for long lasting), threaded 1/8 IP nipples(to attach the socket to the shade and loop that is in the kit). And to adjust the socket so the bulb sits center in your shade you may need couplings or necks( they would go between the shade and socket). If you go to a Lighting Showroom they should be able to supply the parts you need along with some guidance. I don’t know of any websites or books that show you how, sorry.

another suggestion you can try is giving him a chew toy that has a little compartment for treats. Fill that up with peanut butter and doggy treats and that will keep him preoccupied.

My husband just started glass blowing 3 weeks ago. He started with a paper weight which is a common thing to start with. He loves doing it and is getting better. Gel candle wax is one of the most exciting products to arrive on the market for candle makers in a long while. Gel wax is made from a combination of mineral oil and polymer resin. When the resin is mixed into the mineral oil, a solid jelly is formed, and that is the gel candle wax. This gel can then be heated to melting and poured into containers for candles. It must reach temperatures of around 200F degrees, so use caution with this wax.

Gel can be bought in different densities – high, medium and low. The difference in density determines its usability. High density gel wax can support decorations suspended in it better. It’s downside is it is more difficult to pour, and takes longer to meld or set. Gel candles must always be made and kept in a container, since the when the wax sets it looks and feels like jelly, so needs to be supported. Make sure the container can take the high heat of the liquid gel.

The containers for gel candles can be of any material that can take the high heat of the melted wax. Clear glass containers are most commonly used, since the gel is clear, and can be colored in attractive and interesting ways. Gel candles, with their clear wax, can hold inserts such as small seashells, colored glass bits, pieces of dried fruit, seeds and so on. Because of this clear characteristic, gel candles are quite spectacular.

Gel wax made into shapes are available in the marketplace, and with them you can make totally unique candles. Your choices are varied – from grape-shaped and colored gel pieces to simple rectangular chunks. It is also possible to make your own colored chunks or pieces to use. Simply melt the gel wax, following the manufacturer’s directions, add the color, pour into a flat tray with sides, and allow to cool and set. When cold, you can easily cut it into chunks to use by pressing down onto the gel with a sharp knife.

Use these pre-made gel shapes and chunks to make an interesting gel candle. First, glue the wick (with sustainer attached) to the base of your glass container. Now, add a layer of gel chunks into the container. Pour in liquefied gel wax in a contrasting or complementing color to fill in the gaps between the chunks. Add another layer of gel chunks, and repeat. When the container is filled to within a quarter inch of the top, it is complete. After the gel has cooled and set, trim the wick, and your candle is ready to use.

Gel wax can be used like other waxes – melted and poured into a container, where it cools and makes a simple container candle. It must be melted to 200F degrees, over direct heat. You can also use an electric pot with its own heating element and temperature control. Because of the high temperature required to melt it, always have a fire extinguisher near by. Pour the wax carefully into the heat-proof container, to just within a half inch from the top, and while it is still molten, add some glitter for effect. Stir gently, so no bubbles form. If you pour the wax at a faster rate into the container it will have a bubbly ocean water feel. When the candle is cool, snip off the wick to a quarter inch.

Which ever method you use to make your gel candles, pay careful attention to safety, and wash after you make your candles, as the wax gel is slightly toxic. Never burn a gel candle down right to the container bottom, as the heat may cause the container to crack or break, and allow hot liquid gel to flow out. With this gel wax, you will have gorgeous container candles to enjoy, and even to gift to friends and family, or who knows – start your own business!

Whats the best way to clean one of those things that you put a candle in and let the wax melt on top?

It looks kind of like a pot and when I dump it out I always get the wax all over the darn thing!

Put it in the freezer for a day or two. The residual wax will become brittle and you should be able to just pop it right out. I use an old butter knife to gently pop it out of the votive holder. Be careful not to break it! I then rub the surface with a paper towel to make sure there isn’t any wax left, then wash with soapy water.

They do make candle wax remover that you can buy at any big store in the candle dept., but this way is cheaper and works just as well.

It seems to me that you have started with a wrong choice that is going to fight with your desired appearance – you can’t make the foam core transparent, which means you are going to have to coat it with gels and colors that fake the appearance of ice, which takes you away from sculpture and into painting. You will have to research thick coatings, perhaps even going to the materials used in dioramas and HO model railroads to create rough water and waves.

It sounds like you don’t have quite enough color in your centerpieces to draw the eye. If you just want to supplement what you already have, why don’t you try getting some curling ribbon in gold and ivory and get some red silk rose petals (I’ve seen them at Party City, among other places). Curl a few yards of ribbon per table and just lay around the glass pebbles and candles, then sprinkle on a handful of the petals for additional color. You might want to add a few drops of yellow food coloring to the water that the roses are in (make it resemble champagne?) because it is color that will make the whole thing sparkle.

On a different note, for my centerpieces, I got some of those clear acrylic boxes and put pictures of my husband and I as children on the sides. We had eighteen tables, so I got 36 different pictures of me and 36 of him (I took them to Kinko’s and got color copies so the originals were safe). I cut them to fit just inside the boxes and taped them in. Then, the boxes themselves were filled with birdseed and paper fans were stuck into the seed to keep them upright (my wedding was in July and it was an outdoor reception). The guests didn’t want to just stay at one table. They had to go around and see all the different pictures of us.

Although I agree with the answers given I will go ahead and give you my interpretation of the colors as I have learned over the years. I am going to try to remain specific to spellwork:

Blue Candle:

If it’s dark blue, it can be used for protection spells. If it’s light blue, it can be used for emotional healing and calming nerves and getting rid of anxiety. Blue can also be used to represent the water element on an altar.

Gold Candle – Can be used to represent the God aspect of Divinity on an altar and/or the Sun. Can also be used in prosperity spells or to draw strength from the masculine aspect of the Divine.

Green Candle – I have used green candles for prosperity spells (coupled with crushed basil) and it is very, very effective. Personally, this is the only way I have used them. It can be used to represent the Earth element on an altar. Personally, I prefer a brown candle for that but they aren’t so easy to come by (unscented that is).

Orange Candle – Can be used to boost confidence, can be used in any kind of “cheer me up” spell…can also be used in spirit communication for attracting spirits. Also can be used for creativity.

Purple Candle – For psychic activity, astral travel, spirit communication and spiritual healing. Can also be used in physical healing spells as well. A light purple candle is more along the lines of the light blue candle, providing calm and comfort…relaxation.

Red Candle – The ultimate manifestation candle. Can be used to create passion and motivation in any given situation. You can place a red candle next to something you are supposed to study and the candle will draw you and compel you to focus and take interest in what you are studying. If you burn it by itself for no reason, you might find yourself totally drawn to it and playing with the wax and flame…I speak from experience on that one. It’s a really good color for candle meditations. It can be used to boost spells or to remove obstacles. It represents the fire element on an altar.

Silver Candle – Can be used to represent the Goddess on an altar. It also connects to the Moon’s energies. It is great for divination for that reason. As with the Gold candle, it can be used to draw strength from the Goddess.

White Candle – Can be used in place of any candle color. You can use it in prosperity spells, protection spells, healing spells etc. White is neutral in the way that clear crystal quartz is. It can be programmed to carry out a specific task. If allowed to burn on their own, they generate positivity, protection and clarity…actually, clear crystal quartz and white candles have the same definitions…never noticed that before.

Yellow Candle – This one I am weary of for personal reasons but I will tell you what I know that it can do. It attracts all things paranormal. IT can be used for spirit communication, you can call on your guides with it. You can use it to learn new things, it can be used for study. You can place a yellow candle in front of something you don’t know much about (like maybe a stone or a symbol) and it will either signal your guides to educate you, or the spirit of the object itself will respond to you. It is a very powerful color (when speaking of candles).

I have never had good experiences with yellow candles but I think it is because my ancestors come from islands where I have been told that white magick and black magick is prominent there. I think that yellow is used in black magick there and I feel that when I burn yellow candles, even though they have plenty of positive uses, it taps into a dark place for me.

I want to add brown candles:

If you need to move, need a new job or are out of sorts and need to ground, use a brown candle and do a grounding spell. They are super effective. Brown candles will root you to the Earth and give you a very stabilized feeling. So if you are somewhere that you are unhappy and can’t find a way out, a brown candle will work with Mother Earth and manifest a better destination for you.

Oh yeah and gray candles:

Gray IMO, is a very magickal color, it generates magickal energy. Just by burning it, your “witchy” side is stimulated.

That’s all I can think of right now. I do think that our lineages have a great effect on what color will symbolize what. While I do agree that sometimes we develop opinions of colors over time, the opinion our higher self (our witchy self) has is way more accurate and is tapping into our ancestry….which is where our greatest power is. So tapping into that lineage…of all our lives combined, our soul’s lineage, will align us with the correct color symbolizations for us individually.
