A license is your best bet, but you might want to look for an interior design class or workshop. You may want to do a few “freebies” for publicity and to build a reference list and a portfolio.

For a small office, I think a flat fee ($50 to $350) is not too much. If I were the office manager/owner, I would expect an initial consultation and a formal proposal, including a drawing and paint samples, fabric samples, carpet samples, etc. I would be a very unsatisified customer if I paid $200 for a picture from a magazine paired with the suggestion to remove the current wallpaper and paint the walls blue. I think a large office would be leary to hire you because you do not have a license.

For a home, I think a rate of $15 to $25 / room for an in home consultation seems fair. I would still expect to see a semi-formal proposal or a drawing/floorplan and samples. You could also charge an hourly rate or a flat rate, depending on the homeowner. Many homeowners would be willing to pay just for a fresh perspective and for different ideas.

Interior Decorating – DIY Beginner Basics

Decorating a space is a personal and sometimes painstaking endeavor. For the novice who decides to plunge ahead with a DIY project, there are many cable television shows that cater to every area of decorating and design that can offer helpful and insightful tips. But, what about the neophyte who wants to attempt decorating a space in their home for the very first time and require more guidance than an HGTV cable show can offer? For them, decorating can be a daring and daunting undertaking. Often, the most intimidating part of decorating for a beginner is choosing a paint color. Just imagine how overwhelming it must be to venture into a paint store and see hundreds of colors available (with the most creative names, I might add). Sure, the pros make decorating look easy; and to a pro it is. But for the amateur who desires a personal blueprint of sorts to get them started, there are basic tips that can be followed to point them in the right direction. Following is a brief overview of basic key areas to consider when attempting a DIY interior decorating project for the first time.

Determine the style for the space:
Resist the urge to jump right in. Begin by asking yourself a few questions about the space.

What will I do in the space?
How do I want to feel in the space?
Who else will use the space on a regular basis?

If necessary, ask other members of the family the same questions. The answers to these queries will help to decide if the space is to be decorated formally or casually, for instance. Of course, there are other styles to be considered. The style chosen will determine many of the subsequent decisions such as the type of furniture placed in the room, the fabric chosen, as well as the type of window treatment that is installed, to name a few.

For example, the casual style typically has simple details, textured elements and lots of horizontal lines. The furniture tends to be large in scale and upholstered or slip covered. Whereas the formal style is inspired by period homes with elaborate architectural features and special attention is placed on symmetry and lines.

Choose the colors for your space :
As previously stated, this can be a great source of angst for the DIY decorator. Color has the ability to evoke emotional responses in people so consider the style and mood of the room and choose the color accordingly. For instance, red is a stimulating color well suited for family rooms. Green, on the other hand, is a calming color that would be a good choice for a space dedicated to relaxing. Because there are countless colors to choose from it is helpful to utilize what professional decorators call the rule of three. That is, use only three colors, excluding neutrals, in their various values, intensities, and textures to avoid a space that is overwhelming with too many colors that may or may not be complimentary.

Generally, the stronger or primary color is used for the accessories or perhaps an accent wall. Once a few colors are identified, preview them on small, inconspicuous parts of a wall so it can be observed in all types of lighting. Lighting will change how the color appears. Also, remember that paint always dries darker and seems more intense when an entire wall is painted as opposed to a small test area.

Pay attention to the paint finish. The shinier the finish, the easier it will be to clean. These high gloss finishes are perfect for high traffic areas like baths and kitchens. Good sources of inspiration for a color scheme are an area rug, fabric, or art piece to be used in the space. Select three colors from your inspiration piece and use them in the space.

Choose fabrics carefully:
The style you choose to decorate in and the purpose of the space will strongly dictate the kind of fabrics you choose. For instance, if you are decorating a family room that has a southern exposure in the casual style, fabrics that do not stand up to constant use (perhaps by children and pets) would not be a good choice. Additionally, a space that receives a great deal of sunlight would make using silks and other delicate fabrics prone to fade not cost effective options.

Be budget minded:
No matter which style you choose, always shop within your means. If you have to choose between an expensive piece of art and an economical sofa for the living room, purchase a really good sofa first. The sofa will need to withstand years of use. It would be wise to invest the larger part of your budget on a soundly constructed sofa that will end up saving you money in the long run. It is far easier to obtain budget friendly accent pieces that are aesthetically pleasing to balance out your décor. In time, those accent pieces can be replaced with more expensive ones, if necessary.

Choosing wall art:
Be creative when it comes to adorning your walls. Think outside of the box and consider a wrought iron sculptured piece or a wall vase with quality faux flowers cascading down. If you are putting together a gallery of photos, use the same color or metal finish frames as not to detract from the subject matter. Remember to measure twice to avoid turning your newly painted walls into Swiss cheese. Whatever you hang, the center of it should be between 62 – 65 inches from the floor.

There are a myriad of other factors to consider during the decorating process, such as implementing the elements of design, balance, harmony. The finished product should be both stylish and functional. Many of my fellow decorators enjoy consulting on DIY projects. I also enjoy assisting someone in the creating of their space. The bond that is established with a DIY client is as strong as when I take on a project on my own with little to no input from the client. It is rewarding to see the look of satisfaction on the face of someone who has embarked upon a DIY project and emerged on the other side with a space they can be proud to have decorated themselves. While it may be less stressful to hire a professional interior decorator, it is can be very gratifying to do it yourself. For those who feel up to the challenge, these basic guidelines will help immensely.

Most of us lead hectic lives as we balance our work with personal obligations. We may be stressed out juggling all of this and need some sort of stress release, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. Or we may be perfectly happy with our busy lives, but still could use some time to bring some peace and calm into our world.

Meditation has long been a practice that lets people find that inner peace and outer calm. It allows us to take a break from the busyness of our lives. It gives us a respite from hurrying about so we can create some outer calm. And it provides our minds with a rest from thinking overtime and growing more stressed by the day.

If you’ve never really experienced inner peace and outer calm, you’re in for a real treat. Meditation is not just for monks, religious fanatics, or recluses. Today meditation is for everyone who seeks sanctuary from the world-even for a few minutes a day. And it’s not all that complicated or difficult to do to get instant benefits. You might not become a master meditator and achieve instant stillness of your mind the first time you do it, but you will get immediate relief from your frantic life as you retreat into that quiet place within.

Here are 10 simple steps to start you on your way:

1. Commit to your daily practice. Decide that you will meditate every day, even if just for 5 minutes.

2. Find a place where you can meditate every day. Pick a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed and meditate there every day, as you will build up energy in that space.

3. Choose the time. Meditate the same time each day if possible, best times being early morning or early evening. Start out for 5 minutes and add a few more minutes each day until you’re up to 20-30 minutes.

4. Prepare the environment. Light a candle, burn incense, create an atmosphere conducive to quieting your mind and body.

5. Warm up. Before meditating, practice yoga or stretch out your body to relax your muscles and slow down your mind.

6. Select the most comfortable posture. Most meditators sit in a chair, on the floor, or on a bench with a straight back. Find what works best for you so you stay alert but relaxed.

7. Start with 3-part breathing. Breathe in through your nose into your abdomen and let it expand. Bring the breathe into your lungs and let them fill up. Collapse your abdomen and push the air out through your nose.

8. Continue slow, deep breathing. Breathe slowly and deeply to a count of 5 for each of the three parts, until you feel sufficiently relaxed.

9. Select a method for each meditation session. You might try counting breaths, counting numbers or saying a mantra (a simple one is I AM). Listen to music, watch a candle. Observe your thoughts; stare at a mandala. You can also experiment with chanting, visualizing a relaxing scene, doing yoga, or simply practicing a state of mindfulness. All are all acceptable methods for meditating; find out which one works for you.

10. Keep a journal. Record your experiences with meditation to see what benefits you’re getting; this will keep you motivated to keep at it and try different things.

Some people meditate for years and never achieve a perfectly silent mind, however, if you don’t make that your only goal, you won’t set yourself up for disappointment or failure. Just look at the precious time you take to sit quietly in meditation as a mental spa, a break in your routine, a gift to yourself. You need to take time every day to recharge your mental and physical batteries. Consider meditation as your tool to achieve inner peace and outer calm to return to your life refreshed.

A dinosaur bedroom theme is a very popular bedroom design for a boys room. Colorful dinosaurs romping through a tropical jungle can excite a young child’s curiosity. The allure of archeological dinosaru digs, paleontology, dinosaur fossils and the ferocious T-Rex often appeal to the older crew.

Dinosaurs are loved among younger boys, and they offer a lot of opportunity for creativity to make their room special.
Another added advantage of doing a room in a dinosaur theme is that it offers him a chance to learn more about these interesting creatures.

Take a few moments to consider exactly what kind of room you’d like to do. You could perhaps re-create an entire jungle scene complete with dinosaurs of every kind, or you could build a desert habitat. It’s important to let your child help research which dinosaurs would be in each climate and try to decorate the bedroom accordingly. If he’s crazy about one particular type of dinosaur, like the ever popular Tyrannosaurus Rex, concentrate on that creature in particular.

There are so many options that parents can take when decorating a child’s bedroom or nursery in a dinosaur theme, dinosaur wallpaper options can be found all over the Internet.
Parents might also consider the more affordable coat of paint for their dinosaur bedroom project. Color choices can range from sand colored tans two suit the pudding paleontologists to a vibrant green of the jungle foliage. With so many options, parents may want to choose bedding and accent pieces first to aid in the decision.

By taking the time to create an attractive jungle scene, you’ll really showcase the rest of the room. You could even intensify the outdoorsy feeling by painting the ceiling sky blue if you’ve got the time and desire.

Once the walls are covered, parents can add a dinosaur theme wallpaper border or try their hand that dino stencils. If they went with the sandy yellows or Browns of you a site, they can use craft paint to add enormous dino bones protruding from the sand. If they opted for the jungle look, they can use different shades of green add two large palm FROND and other prehistoric looking plants. Artistic Parents can use the craft paint to add a towering T-Rex, soaring pterodactyl, gentle Brontosaurus, armored triceratops, or menacing Raptor Jurassic amidst the foliage. Peel and stick wall decals or wallpaper murals are an equally attractive option.
If parents want to leave the walls a solid green, they can add some depth by hanging silk jungle wines from sticky hooks near the ceiling.

You’ve got a lot of the same options with dinosaur bedding that you do with dinosaur window treatments. You should easily be able to find sheet sets printed with dinosaurs fairly easily. Simply do a Google search for, “dinosaur bedding”. If you’re looking for something a little more creative, or something that ties into your color scheme a little better you may want to consider some of these options: Get plain sheets and a comforter or blanket in your colors of choice. For example, in the jungle room, you might try brown sheets with a green comforter.

Your child will simply love his or her dinosaur bedroom theme, and will roar like a gaint T-Rex and more than likely destroy the bedroom just like one.

Winter may not be over yet, but why dwell on the cold outside, when you can get a jumpstart on spring inside your home.

While everyone talks about spring cleaning and redecorating, why should you wait until spring to start these indoor activities? Once spring arrives, it’s time to be outside, enjoying the warmer weather, not limit yourself to indoor activities. We say, get a jump on spring cleaning, and decorating, and be ready to welcome the season change in with open arms.

First things first, if you haven’t gotten rid of your holiday decorations, you’re way behind schedule. Box them up and get them out of the house! This would also be a good time for a little tidying up around your home. Go over your spring cleaning list and complete as many of the tasks as you can at this time.

Next, it’s time to decide how you are going to welcome spring. There are two ways to do this in your home – smells and sights. I recommend both.

What scents remind you of spring? It could be the fruit blossoms on the trees or blooming flowers. Maybe it’s the scent of the sea breeze, as the beach once again becomes a tempting site. Whatever scent is the best for you, you can likely find a scented jar candle to bring that scent to life in your home. The brighter, more saturated the colors, the more modern it will feel. Your choices of pink and green seem like they would go better with black as a base, rather than navy. I would stay away from off white and go with a bright white instead. White walls with a black bedspread is a good starting point for a modern bedroom, especially if you add some pillows in black and white with a graphic print on them. Add some bright and glass/metal pieces and it should come together. You could also paint the built ins a different color than the walls to really make them pop. Maybe paint the sides and shelves one color, and then paint the back (inside) another color and use it as a focal point. I’d find an area that is small and not noticable and put a dab of shaving cream on it (the foam stuff and not the gel). Let it sit there a while and rinse it off by dabbing it with a wet cloth. After it dries, if there is no change in texture or colour, then try to use that on the stain and scrub it with an old tooth brush. After the area is clean, get the residue of the foam out with a cloth that you rinse frequently.
