I’d be concerned about using just a towel. The shape of the kayak’s hull might not match up well with your roof. And even with the towel, tying the kayak more or less directly to the roof could dent it.

If you can’t spring for a rack, at least get some foam blocks. They’ll conform to the shape of the kayak a little better and will provide a little more cushioning between the kayak and the car. Make sure you secure the ends of the kayak by running ropes from the bow and stern to points near your car’s bumpers. There are kits that include the blocks and all the straps you’ll need. Also look at craigslist and local classifieds for used roof racks if you’re interested in getting one later on. Used racks can be pretty cheap, but you may have to be patient when looking for a rack that can specifically fit your car.
