I have a goose down “feather bed” topper in my guest bedroom…so comforting to sink into when I want to take a nap. The “down” side to it’s everyday use is that you have to re-fluff them after use to keep it fairly level, even if the down is sewn into channels or squares. It needs fluffing, just like a feather pillow does. On my bed in the master bedroom, I have a very firm mattress with two 2″ memory foam pads. I got the 4″ depth which is soooo comfy, but when I want to change anything with the bed, the toppers are easy enough to move around. A single 4″ would be too heavy and cumbersome to move. They also maintain shape very well. Another consideration is making the bed. When you have a feather bed, the top comforter or covering does not look flat and pretty. When you have the memory foam pads, it all makes up nice and flat. I purchased mine from Sams Club, and they were a very decent price….well worth the excellent night’s sleep.

My favorite is silk, yet if you are creating a traditional style quilt, the silk may not be suitable. You can still make a quilt of silk, yet you will pay top-dollar and spend a length of undesired time to finish your project. In fact, most crafters do not recommend silk for creating quilts.

Wool has migrating fibers, yet you can sew through the material with ease. You will need to space closely when needling. The wool over time will loose its fibers however. Wool will also fuzz. You can use lightweight materials, or cloths to prevent fuzziness, as well as to prevent fiber loss. Wool is not suitable for machine wash; rather you should take your quilt to a professional cleaner, or wash it by hand and allow it to air dry.

Now choose your style:

If you want the antique or traditional quilt, you will need to use the “low loft” material. The quilts include the Fairfield, which is 100% bleached cotton, the poly-filled cottons, which is 80 % cotton; the “Mountain Mist/Blue Ribbon Stearns” are 100% cotton as well. You can also choose the 100% polyester, Morning Glory, or the Glory BEE I, which is also 100% polyester. Many other styles and varieties are available.

Once you decide which fibers, or fabrics you want to craft your quilt you can then consider your backing. You can purchase yards of backing. The backing today makes it easy to fill in the length and width of your quilt. Ultimately, if you choose backings that come up short or longer you can stitch a couple of pieces together to even your quilt. Still, you want to make sure that the backings work in harmony with your fabrics, or fibers.

Ultimately, if you want to spend time making a quilt you can choose blocks and patches. The pieces of material were frequently used by grandmas, or women of traditional days. The quilts are often sturdier than the modern quilts, yet you can still craft a strong quilt today.

For the millions of U.S. families who display artificial Christmas trees every holiday season, the same plaguing question must be answered every year: What do I do with this thing now that the holidays are over?  For most people, an artificial Christmas tree is the largest of all the holiday decorations that has to be stored.  Concurrently, it is also typically the most expensive item, as well.  With that in mind, the way that we store artificial trees is a topic that deserves some attention.  In this article, we will explain the right way-as well as some of the wrong ways-to store your artificial Christmas tree.

For many people, the easiest and most obvious choice for artificial tree storage is to simply put it back in its original box.  Unfortunately, this is often times easier said than done.  Trying to stuff an artificial Christmas tree back into its original box is a lot like buying a king size sheet set, removing it from its zippered pouch and completely unfolding it, and then later trying to get it back into the original packaging.  In short, it’s nearly impossible.  The other problem with storing your tree in its original box is that the cardboard does little to nothing to protect the tree from getting dusty and dirty.  Cardboard can also attract insects and vermin, and in the event that it gets wet, will quickly be destroyed.

Another potential option for artificial tree storage is to wrap the tree in plastic or sheets.  To some extent, this can be a good idea, though it does depend how your tree disassembles.  Most artificial trees on the market today feature hinged branches, meaning that each section can be compressed down to a fairly narrow diameter.  If this is the case, it may be possible for you to carefully wrap each section in a piece of plastic drop cloth or an old sheet, and tie with some string or twine.  However, if you have an older artificial tree with fixed branches that don’t compress, storing in a sheet probably won’t do much good.  At best, you’ll just be draping the sheet over the tree, and this doesn’t do much to keep out dust, moisture, or pests.

By far, the best options for artificial Christmas tree storage are to purchase a plastic bin or a bag that is specifically designed for that purpose.  Such products are readily available through discount stores, specialty catalogs, and online retail outlets.  Specifically, you should look for a bag with a zipper or a container with a tight fitting lid, to keep out dust and dirt.  Furthermore, if you have an especially large or heavy tree, it might also be a good idea to look for a storage container with wheels for easy mobility.

While a tree storage bag or bin isn’t free like the original box or the old sheet in your closet, they will do a far better job of protecting your tree and keeping it clean.  And doesn’t it make more sense to spend $50 or $100 on a good tree storage container that you’ll have forever, versus spending $300 or $400 on a new artificial Christmas tree every few years, because your old tree got wrecked in storage?  Good artificial tree storage may cost you something up front, but it will save you a lot of time, hassle, and replacement trees in the long run.

My freind was in the same position but because he had an almost antique bed… The other night, I slept at his place and he had bought a memory foam mattress pad. The difference was unbelievable… but true! So, I have this supposedly really great mattress… It should be, it cost an arm and a leg. But for 3 years now (and I’ve only had it for 5 yrs), every morning when I woke up, I had lower back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain. In fact, throughout the night, there was always my subconcious knowing that I wasn’t sleeping well and the discomfort would penetrate my sleep, robbing me of a good night’s sleep.

So I went out last night and bought the same memory foam mattress pad as my friend. I’m now a FIRM believer! I slept thru the whole night, without feeling any pain anywhere, and when the alarm went off this morning, I had no pain anywhere. No kidding! Get yourself one of these… and if your mattress is sagging like a hammock, then do like someone else already said, and put a piece of plywood underneath to stop that. Then put the memory foam on top. You will be amazed!

Oh… almost forgot: We both bought the mattress memory pad at WalMart. It’s 109$ Canadian (so less in US) for a queen size. I’m not sure if I remember correctly, but it seems to me I remember seeing 49$ +/- for a twin bed size. It comes in a box and is with the mattress pads in the linen section.

Oh.. one last thing: my oldest daughter is going off to college in the fall, in a dorm room just like you’re about to do. She lay down on my bed lastnight after I had made the bed with the memory foam pad and she loved it… enough to ask us for one for her dorm room. I swear…one VERY LAST THING… My youngest daughter, who is 13 going on 14 tried it too… and said she was sleeping with me. Her father could go sleep in her bed! She wants one too.

The best way to visualize the size is this. Put together side by side two twin beds. That is how wide a king size bed is. As for length, you would have to order the longer length variety, because most sheets and covers are designed to fit the regular length 72 inches. The width of a regular twin is 46 inches.

I have a king sized white down comforter from Ikea. Since it is European, their comforters are meant to sit on top of the bed, not drape along the sides. pencil in a 1″ square grid. then you can take each piece of the grid and enlarge it, transfer each part of the 1′ square onto a larger grid,
in your case, each 1″ needs to become 10″ . If you do each 10″
grid on a separate piece of paper, then you can staple or tape the
individual grids together to make the size quilt you need. The only
thing is that somethime enlarging something that much, the design
doesn’t look as good as at a smaller size. So you may need to play
around with the dimensions to see what looks best.

You may want to ask/search the web for opinions about the particular brand of fusible batting. I used one once for a baby quilt. Some of the melted adhesive made little hard spots. The needle hit them while quilting, and the feel of the finished quilt wasn’t right. Fortunately it was a “low hours” quilt that wasn’t destined for anyone in particular so I donated it to a pet shelter. Sorry I don’t remember the brand but it was enough to put me off fusible batting altogether.

It also is not easy wrangling the quilt on an ironing board, and a king sized quilt will probably put up a fight.

Basting spray is probably a much better alternative to hand basting. Once you have sprayed it you can do the layering on a big surface (clear the living room furniture or mop that kitchen floor, LOL) instead of on a flimsy ironing board. The spray is also somewhat repositionable, allowing you to smooth the layers perfectly. Ideally you would have a friend to assist, but it is doable by yourself.

It’s confusing buying bedding. There are so many choices, so many things to think about, and there seems to be bedding available in so many places, including online. With so many choices and so many bedding stores around how do you go about buying the bedding that you need for your family?

The first thing you need is to do some homework. Work out a few basic bedding parameters.

One of the first choices you need to make is what type of material will you buy? There are choices here and if you head on into a store and are suddenly confronted with a range of materials to choose from then it may become confusing.

Cotton bedding is my choice. Cotton sheets or covers are made from a totally natural fabric that feels good on the skin. Cotton is long lasting and shouldn’t create problems for the occupant of the bed, such as bunching or sliding. Cotton is functional, warm and snuggly.

Equally snuggly is flannel. Flannel is a wool based fabric, but which is warmer than cotton. Flannel is warm and snuggly on that super cold winters night, and you can slide down under the sheets and feel great, but flannel can be too warm, especially in summer. Cotton is a better choice.

Then there is the more exotic fabrics like silk and satin or polyester satin. Personally I’d stay away from these. They may sound exotic and sexy but you have to sleep in your silk or satin sheets or cover every night and these fabrics can be difficult. They tend to slide easily to are hard to keep in place and can feel a little strange unless you really do love them.

Cotton for me. But of course it’s not quite as easy as just deciding on cotton sheets or a cotton bed cover. There are different weaves of cotton available. There is standard cotton weave, pinpoint, sateen and satin weaves. Personally standard or pinpoint weaves are my choice. And when you look on the label you will also see a “thread count”. This is the number of threads per square inch in the fabric, or the density of the fabric. Higher thread count equals higher quality, but more expensive bedding, as higher quality usually is.

Choose a thread count of at least 250 for sufficient quality without paying a bomb for your bedding.

Next what size do you need and what type of bedding? There are of course “Queen Size” and “King Size” beds but many people are not aware that there is no formal or standard bed size that equates to either Queen Size or King Size. So measure your bed first, including the depth, so you know what size sheets you will need or you may be disappointed. If you buy a fitted sheet that isn’t deep enough for the depth of the mattress then you’ll find that the fitted sheet is likely to slide off the mattress during the night and you’ll find yourself tangled in sheets during the night and sleeping on the mattress.

Decide whether you want to buy your bedding individually or as a set. Sheet sets include a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and two standard or king sized pillow case. And as well you can buy complete bed in a bag sets which include the sheet set and a bed skirt, pillow shams and a matching comforter or duvet cover. You get everything you need in one purchase.

If you’re using a comforter or duvet you also need a good cover, it is more hygeinic to use a cover than not. A bed in a bag set will include this but you need to make sure it will work with your comforter.

Again cotton is my preferred choice of fabric.

And of course there’s all sorts of considerations about washing and caring for your bedding. You can’t necesarily just throw your sheets and pillow cases straight into the machine to wash them.

That’s the basics of choosing good bedding. It can get far more complicated of course, and if you feel like it do some research into all the specific types of fabrics available, but for me it’s cotton, or at least a cotton blend every time for my bedding.

And of course bedding isn’t cheap normally, although there are places that do give you options for buying cheap bedding online, but that’s a subject for another article.

Usually there’s a tag on the sheet that’ll give ya’ a hint… whether it’s a fitted sheet (w/ elastic at the corners) or a “flat sheet” (no elastic, truly a FLAT sheet).

If there is a tag on the sheet, it’s normally is placed on the bed so the tag is on the lower-left corner (as you face the bed, standing at the “foot” of the bed).

Regular king size mattresses (sometimes called an “Eastern King”) are 76″ wide by approximately 80″ long. A “Claifornia King” mattress is 72″ wide x 84″ long.

Eastern King sheets sizes are normally: 76″-78″ x 80″ for a fitted sheet and 108″ x 102″ for a flat sheet.

For the living room, i suggest a color called “reddened earth” by sherwin williams. it will coordinate with the sofa to create a warm natural feel in the room.

As for the bedroom, i think a mauve, like “damsel,” would look good with the brown.

I worked in retail in the home division for many years. The down comforter in Full/Queen will fit all but the very deep pillowtop matresses. Properly sized, the comforter should “just cover” the mattress, You should be able to see the bedskirt (which covers your box spring) evenly, on all sides.

Your problem, if you have a tradtional, non-pillowtop mattress… May be that you’re putting the down comforter directly on the bed without putting the comforter in a Duvet cover. A down comforter sold, in a white cotton shell, is not meant to be used uncovered. They are made a bit “short” so they do not bunch up within the duvet cover. Duvet covers are made about 4-6 inches larger than down comforters, on all sides.This is to also encourage lofting of the down.

The purpose of the duvet cover is not only to allow you to easily change the look of your bed. But also to protect the comforter from dirt and soiling.
