Interior Decorating – DIY Beginner Basics

Decorating a space is a personal and sometimes painstaking endeavor. For the novice who decides to plunge ahead with a DIY project, there are many cable television shows that cater to every area of decorating and design that can offer helpful and insightful tips. But, what about the neophyte who wants to attempt decorating a space in their home for the very first time and require more guidance than an HGTV cable show can offer? For them, decorating can be a daring and daunting undertaking. Often, the most intimidating part of decorating for a beginner is choosing a paint color. Just imagine how overwhelming it must be to venture into a paint store and see hundreds of colors available (with the most creative names, I might add). Sure, the pros make decorating look easy; and to a pro it is. But for the amateur who desires a personal blueprint of sorts to get them started, there are basic tips that can be followed to point them in the right direction. Following is a brief overview of basic key areas to consider when attempting a DIY interior decorating project for the first time.

Determine the style for the space:
Resist the urge to jump right in. Begin by asking yourself a few questions about the space.

What will I do in the space?
How do I want to feel in the space?
Who else will use the space on a regular basis?

If necessary, ask other members of the family the same questions. The answers to these queries will help to decide if the space is to be decorated formally or casually, for instance. Of course, there are other styles to be considered. The style chosen will determine many of the subsequent decisions such as the type of furniture placed in the room, the fabric chosen, as well as the type of window treatment that is installed, to name a few.

For example, the casual style typically has simple details, textured elements and lots of horizontal lines. The furniture tends to be large in scale and upholstered or slip covered. Whereas the formal style is inspired by period homes with elaborate architectural features and special attention is placed on symmetry and lines.

Choose the colors for your space :
As previously stated, this can be a great source of angst for the DIY decorator. Color has the ability to evoke emotional responses in people so consider the style and mood of the room and choose the color accordingly. For instance, red is a stimulating color well suited for family rooms. Green, on the other hand, is a calming color that would be a good choice for a space dedicated to relaxing. Because there are countless colors to choose from it is helpful to utilize what professional decorators call the rule of three. That is, use only three colors, excluding neutrals, in their various values, intensities, and textures to avoid a space that is overwhelming with too many colors that may or may not be complimentary.

Generally, the stronger or primary color is used for the accessories or perhaps an accent wall. Once a few colors are identified, preview them on small, inconspicuous parts of a wall so it can be observed in all types of lighting. Lighting will change how the color appears. Also, remember that paint always dries darker and seems more intense when an entire wall is painted as opposed to a small test area.

Pay attention to the paint finish. The shinier the finish, the easier it will be to clean. These high gloss finishes are perfect for high traffic areas like baths and kitchens. Good sources of inspiration for a color scheme are an area rug, fabric, or art piece to be used in the space. Select three colors from your inspiration piece and use them in the space.

Choose fabrics carefully:
The style you choose to decorate in and the purpose of the space will strongly dictate the kind of fabrics you choose. For instance, if you are decorating a family room that has a southern exposure in the casual style, fabrics that do not stand up to constant use (perhaps by children and pets) would not be a good choice. Additionally, a space that receives a great deal of sunlight would make using silks and other delicate fabrics prone to fade not cost effective options.

Be budget minded:
No matter which style you choose, always shop within your means. If you have to choose between an expensive piece of art and an economical sofa for the living room, purchase a really good sofa first. The sofa will need to withstand years of use. It would be wise to invest the larger part of your budget on a soundly constructed sofa that will end up saving you money in the long run. It is far easier to obtain budget friendly accent pieces that are aesthetically pleasing to balance out your décor. In time, those accent pieces can be replaced with more expensive ones, if necessary.

Choosing wall art:
Be creative when it comes to adorning your walls. Think outside of the box and consider a wrought iron sculptured piece or a wall vase with quality faux flowers cascading down. If you are putting together a gallery of photos, use the same color or metal finish frames as not to detract from the subject matter. Remember to measure twice to avoid turning your newly painted walls into Swiss cheese. Whatever you hang, the center of it should be between 62 – 65 inches from the floor.

There are a myriad of other factors to consider during the decorating process, such as implementing the elements of design, balance, harmony. The finished product should be both stylish and functional. Many of my fellow decorators enjoy consulting on DIY projects. I also enjoy assisting someone in the creating of their space. The bond that is established with a DIY client is as strong as when I take on a project on my own with little to no input from the client. It is rewarding to see the look of satisfaction on the face of someone who has embarked upon a DIY project and emerged on the other side with a space they can be proud to have decorated themselves. While it may be less stressful to hire a professional interior decorator, it is can be very gratifying to do it yourself. For those who feel up to the challenge, these basic guidelines will help immensely.

Designer lighting is not an easy task. It requires knowledge, creativity and skills. It may not require educational background; however, it pays to know the basic things about designing the lighting system of a certain place or area.

If you choose to give life to your kitchen, there are several classifications of fixtures, which can be   recessed from the ceiling.  Pendant lights suit perfectly to point light to the dinner table, if you do not like to have chandelier. While preparing for meals, you can do the work easily when you have wall lights or ceiling lights customized according to your needs.

The existing theme, design and style of the room are all important. This is another consideration to make. The owner of the house or the officeholder does not want anything to be out of place, especially the lights. Lights are very important because other than being decorative such as designer lighting, they illuminate the place. It now depends whether the whole area needs lights or just a certain portion. Lighting system can be versatile.

Because soft lights produce soft glow, they set the mood of the room. Bright lights are for rooms that have lively activities. Often, bright designer lighting is used at the early part of the evening to prevent lethargy. However, as nights grow deep, soft lights like those of the floor lamps, wall lamps and sidelights on the ceiling give the proper glow fitting to the mood of the hour.

Interior lighting such as Ceiling lights could either light up the entire place from above or certain areas. Pendant light is similar to ceiling lights. It hangs from the ceiling like a pendant on a necklace. Its moniker is swag light and its function is decorative. Versatility is its style, which can be expounded in three ways.

For garden lights, lampposts that are solar lights are among the best for economic reasons. There is a wide variety of solar lampposts to choose from. There is a type of solar light that needs minimal charging and yet, can produce light longer. This type of solar light is ideal for long winter nights and for areas that cannot get direct sunlight.

Color of the room is also considered together with its reflectance. To complement the interior color scheme, the appearance of color coming from designer lighting including lamps must be natural. The selection of lamps can influence the color rendition of the room, thus a careful assessment of the right color combination is the key.

If decorative lights are complementary, make sure that the room has much natural lights as possible. There are many ways to accomplish this; however, the best way is to have see-through or thin clothing for the curtain of the windows or sliding glass doors to allow the lights from outside to penetrate into the room. If blinds are used, they can be adjusted so not to block the light during nighttime until necessary.

Also, it provides lights to walkers or visitors in walking through the front door. Of course, when you have garden set, gazebo and the like, you need Designer lighting. It helps you appreciate the beauty of your investments. Do not worry about the cost for outdoor lighting system because solar lights are the trend today. In fact, solar lights are more than a trend, it is a way of the lighting system to be cost-efficient while delivering quality light.

You say that these are recessed lights, so I’ll take a guess that they are not flourescents. So we can rule out a ballast. If there is power to the switch, is it on both sides of the switch? If not, the switch is bad. If there is power to both sides of the switch, you probably have a loose connection on the neutral. These don’t normally just fall apart if you have not been working around the wires. DO you have copper or aluminum wiring? Connections can get loose if you have aluminum and this is a safety issue! Get it checked by a qualified electrician or handyman.

Yes – is this sconce light going to be right above your plug-in? If so, you can run a wire from your plug-in box – up into a switch – and from the switch to the sconce.

So you open up the plugin box and unscrew the plugin and pull it out so you can get into the box. Leave the wires attached. Then get a switch box and a round box for the sconce. The sconce (round) box you can get which just attaches to sheet rock. The switch box you can perhaps screw to a stud – so cut the hole right alongside a stud – then you can screw the box in diagonally with a sharp sheet rock screw. You’ll be using generally those plastic boxes which you can just screw right through.

Get a little #14 wire from the store – cut the holes for the switch and sconce boxes – and see if you can get a wire to go between the plug in and the switch box hole… might take a while – might take using a straightened out hanger. Get that wire up to the switch box hole – and then run another piece from the switch box hole to the sconce hole.

Then shove the wires through the holes in the back of the switch box and screw the switch box in place – same with the sconce box. then tie the wire to the hot and ground of the plug-in. This goes up to your switch. tie the white wires together – and switch the black (hot) line – then stick your sconce light on the white and black coming out of the sconce box.

Pretty easy. If you have to cross a stud, then you’ll have to cut out the sheet rock a little and stick it back in. It’s not too hard if you have a few sheet rock screws. Then you have to patch with a little piece of fiber tape and some plaster. Get to know somebody who plasters – they can do this for you in about 1 minute.

And there you are. Just figure if it takes you a while to do, you’ll get years of use out of it for those few minutes you spend.

It is frustrating when a lighting designer recommends a certain type of lighting and then doesn’t follow up with the source of the fixtures. I would go back to the designers and lean on them to find the fixtures for you. That is their business and they have immediate access to far more resources than you do. I wish I could offer a better solution, but I don’t have an easy answer. I can tell you that I have done as I have advised and found results every time. I have to admit that being a builder offers some leverage with the designers.

It’s been a hectic and stressful day! I rise early and from the moment I awaken there doesn’t seem to be one minute of me time. I work full time at my job and at home my work is never ending. You’re probably thinking that this sounds just like you. Do not despair.  I have found a place to unwind from the day and I do not have go anywhere.

You see, with a little creativity you too can be blessed with a relaxing atmosphere to let your troubles and worries melt around you. This wonderful place that lets me mellow out is my luxurious bathroom. It did not always provide me with this magical feeling. I had to use my imagination and do a little research to make it into my special place or sanctuary.

It was always in my immediate reach. I was just unaware how lighting can change your mood and make your entire self relax. By placing wall sconce lighting in certain areas around my vanity and a hypnotic sconce on the wall overlooking my bath, this room has developed into a spa like atmosphere. It gives off a halo or shadow that surrounds me with a comforting and pleasing feeling. These special effects have given me the energy that is well deserved and needed at the end of the day.

Wall sconce lighting is a functional and decorative piece that attaches to a wall and holds either a candle or a bulb. We can track its history to before the 1400s. It was just a half circle made out of wood or metal and held a small candle. It was only used during these times for functional purposes. Today they are much more complex and decorative.

It can be an elegant addition to any room of your home. It is also a perfect solution for any dark areas in your lighting scheme. Wall sconce lighting looks beautiful wherever they are placed, since they do not have cumbersome cords attached to them. It manufactures versatile illumination with a decorative flair. It bounces its beams of light off the walls and ceilings which provides a subtle glow through translucent covers.

These fixtures are ideal for rooms where floor space is limited and scarce. If placed properly your room will look larger than it is. It can provide a soft background of illumination, highlight focal areas of interest or as a directional track lighting system.   

The style that you choose will depend on your personal preference and decor. You should coordinate the fixture with the other furnishings in the room. This is all possible with the many designs, patterns and sizes that are available.

Wall sconce lighting comes in an abundance of styles like art deco, casual, classic, contemporary, traditional, tiffany and rustic. You will also find these wall sconces are constructed in a large variety of materials. Some examples are wrought iron, crystal, glass, ceramic, wood, brass, pewter, copper and stainless steel.

Some wall sconce lighting fixtures can also boost safety. Placing them in dark hallways or along staircases and over your front door gives you protection from injury and potential intruders. They are also safe to have in homes where there are children. These are normally hung out of reach so accidents do not occur.

The light source inside your wall sconce fixture can be either incandescent or fluorescent. You may want to experiment with the different bulbs to judge which is the most effective for the particular location you wish to hang your wall sconce. Most people today are choosing the fluorescent bulbs for its eco friendly nature. Initially they may be more expensive to purchase, but in the long run these light bulbs will last longer and actually save you money on your electric bill. You can also purchase an LED wireless wall sconces. This design is battery operated and is so easy to install a child could do it. You just push a single button to activate and instantly you have light. Other fixtures may need a professional to make certain it is installed securely and properly.

All of the wires should be tested.

That being said…What is likely the case, you have two wires that are in the “push down” connection and one is on the side screw.

The screw connection and the “push down” connection that is beside it are the same connection.

What is sometimes done in a tight box is; instead of splicing the wires together which would take up room in the box the electrician will use the side screw connection AND the push down connection and use that as a splice to carry the feed wire to another location.

If this is the case

When you disconnect all the wires from the switch (Take note of which wire went to each connection on the switch) you will notice that the power turned off in either a receptacle or the lights in another room.

If this happens, then you know to connect (splice) the two wires that are next to each other (Push down connection and screw connection).Splice those two together with one of the dimmer wires. and then the other wire will splice to the other dimmer wire.

If this is happening often, I suggest removing all of the bulbs and replacing them with a quality name-brand bulb. Maybe a previous owner bought some of the bulk “el-cheapo” bulbs just to fill the sockets.

As long as you are replacing bulbs, replace the ones that stay on for longer than ten or fifteen minutes with fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs produce less heat and use less electricity. If the bulb is only on for a few moments each time, then do not spend the money on the fluorescent replacements, as you gain no appreciable savings.

You need to consider this problem as very dangerous. What you describe might lead to someone receiving an electrical shock or worse.

Yes.. you can do it without taking the doors off.. but its much easier to take the doors off, and much less messy because you can take them out of the house. You can use painters tape to number the cabinet doors and then number where they go on the wall to remember which door goes where! You will want to lightly sand the cabinet doors and of course.. if at all possible, do a test run on the inside of one of the cabinet doors (if it has the same finish as the outsitde) so that you can test your results. Deb D – I’m sorry to say this to you but the copper finish will tarnish and within a year it will fade and even turn into a dull silvery metal look. If you try any lemon, vinegar etc.. etc.. you will only accelerate the tarnishing process.

your only chance of keeping the copper finish is by using a lacquer finish on them and even then it will soon tarnish because of the sun. the finish on most of the solar fixture is poor at best & unless the fixture is made with true copper all the way through and not an applied (very thin) copper finish it will soon fade.

The reason I know this is because I’ve been designing, installing & repairing Landscape Lighting systems for about 20 years now. I get about 15 calls a week from people wanting me to repair their solar lights and I now tell them it’s cheaper to buy new ones (I getquestions about the finishes all the time). I think the idea of a “Solar powered – LED lights” in theory is great but honestly the reality is very different. The LED light is very dim and the color temparature is very unnatural giving a weird looking light. Plus within a year you will have to replace the batteries – and get this most of those types of batteries are considered hazerdous and should be recycled at your city/county recycle center.

Sorry Deb, I know this isn’t the answer you were hoping for, I truely wish I could give you a problem solving answer but the truth is you’ll spend more time and money trying save the nice copper finish but the results I’ve seen all come out the same. Sorry.

These lights were coated by the manufacture with bronze so they would get a blueish patena on purpose. It is for this “look” to make them look old.
However if you want them to look like they did when new, check out a coin dealer and ask him for coin cleaner or use Tarn-X at your local hardware store. Follow the directions and when cleaned spray paint a clear finish to your work to protect it from happening again.

I’d recommend sticking to polished bronze or a bronze and silver combo. Whatever fixture it is, it should have some bronze in it so it doesn’t look jaky. You don’t want two completely different kinds of metals for fixtures normally.

I’m personally not a fan of bronze, so I tend to stick with polished nickel and chrome.

Chandeliers have adorned the halls, churches and abbeys as far back as the medieval times. In these early days, they were candle chandeliers made as a wooden cross and each section had candles secured to them. They were hoisted by a rope and pulley system to a height to provide enough light and tied off in order to prevent it from falling. These candle chandeliers were one of the earliest means of providing light to a dark room.

Later a more complex form of the candle chandelier began to evolve in the form of a ring or even a crown. These designs began to become popular as a decorative piece and often were found in prestigious places such as palaces and the homes of the extravagant and wealthy. As the early forms of these candle chandeliers became popular they took on a “status symbol” of the rich. They continued to grow in popularity and by the early 18th century they were being made from ornate brass cast with various forms and curved arms in order to hold lots of candles. These candle chandeliers then found their way into the homes of many merchants.

As glassmaking evolved the candle chandeliers were adorned with the lead crystals that scattered the light the thus the crystal chandelier began taking on the more popular choice.

One of the most popular chandeliers is the chandelier from the Phantom of the Opera where of course, it was brought crashing down by the Phantom.

Today, candle chandeliers are still used though not so much for the lighting but more for the atmosphere they create. Many of the ones you find in retail outlets have the votive that holds the candles and are found in a wide range of styles, shapes, sizes and materials. One of the more popular types of today’s candle chandelier is made from iron or ornate metal and can be adorned with crystals or other decorative ornaments.

You should do what I did. When you go with prefab models you’ll be spending a minimum of $1500 (more if you use more energy). I went ahead and bought the parts then assembled it myself. I did two units at $200 each which cover my needs (total $400). The quote for my house was nearly $2700. I got the designs from http://www.earth4power.biz which also included places to get all the cheapest parts. It really wasnt as difficult as I thought itd be.

I would suggest you use one or the other finish..the two finishes do not go together and look like you just didn’t complete your decorating.

does anyone know the steps to the wooden splint demonstration. (yes I have looked online) There are many forms and I can’t find the one my teacher did. The only involved materials were a candle, graduated cylinder, lighter/match, and some type of solution. there was no gummy bears, tooth paste or steel wool involved. I just need to know the steps and the name of that solution and also the gas that was produced. A lot of people have heard about the demonstration. you know the one where you light the candle and then blow it out but when you put it in the graduated cylinder the flane reappears.

what you could do that would be ugly but legal is take one of the wall sconces down cover it and adapt out of the box in wire mould (brand name of product)run that across the wall and ceiling to a box and mount a fixture to that

If you have an open attic above this room then i would do it the right way, this would instantly cut the cost down to higher an electrician.

also an electrician could probably pick up power from the wall sconces to power recessed lighting a skilled guy could do this with minimal damage to the plaster/drywall.

I have 6 solar lights in my front yard. I find that the contact between the batteries and the light gets tarnished very easy and the light doesn’t work. I remove the batteries, polish the end and the tabs they connect with in the light and things work fine until the next time. When the tarnish builds up the batteries don’t charge well because of the extra resistance and the light dies in the middle of the night. When it gets too bad the battery can’t power the light at all. I’d fix it but I think I’ll just run a low voltage out to the lights instead. That way I know they’ll work.
