All of the wires should be tested.

That being said…What is likely the case, you have two wires that are in the “push down” connection and one is on the side screw.

The screw connection and the “push down” connection that is beside it are the same connection.

What is sometimes done in a tight box is; instead of splicing the wires together which would take up room in the box the electrician will use the side screw connection AND the push down connection and use that as a splice to carry the feed wire to another location.

If this is the case

When you disconnect all the wires from the switch (Take note of which wire went to each connection on the switch) you will notice that the power turned off in either a receptacle or the lights in another room.

If this happens, then you know to connect (splice) the two wires that are next to each other (Push down connection and screw connection).Splice those two together with one of the dimmer wires. and then the other wire will splice to the other dimmer wire.

The series resistors require a voltage of 6 volts if there are 20 of them and you are working with a series circuit and you have 120 volts. Naturally the bulbs are all identical. If they are not, then the one with the highest resistance glows the brightest.

Let us suppose the each bulb has a power rating of 6 watts.

In a parallel resistance situation, the resistance is

V = 120 volts
P = 6 watts.
R = ????

Formula
P = V^2/R

6 = 120^2/R Cross multiply
6R = 120^2 Sqr the right side
6R = 14400
R = 2400 ohms.

Now try the same thing with the series circuit.
P = V^2/R.
P = 6 watts
V = 6 volts
Formula
P = V^2/R
6*R = 6^2
6R = 36
R = 6 ohms.

Result: The resistance of the series bulb is much smaller, BUT the current drawn is much larger. It is nearly 1 amp. See if you can get that.

The parallel circuit for the same wattage draws 0.05 amp.

Conclusion: The series circuit always has the lower resistance.

It seems to me that too few of you consider ceiling lighting when looking for light fixtures nowadays. It may be a bit presumptuous of me, but I consider myself fairly average and I too am often guilty of overlooking ceiling lighting options such as chandeliers, pendant lights, mounts and even track lighting. So I guess I’m lumping whoever’s reading this in with me. I apologize in advance for that. If you are one of the few who are “in the know” as far as ceiling lights go, then you probably don’t need to keep reading. You are free to pursue other productive uses of your time like needlepoint, stamp collecting or learning Latin. As for the rest of you, read on and we’ll explore the wonderful world of ceiling lighting and how you can use these versatile fixtures in your home or apartment.

Let’s start with the granddaddy of ceiling fixtures, the chandelier. If one lighting fixture has truly evolved over the course of its existence, it’s the chandelier. Once a status symbol hung in many a dining room and atrium in decadent Victorian homes, these early chandeliers were odes to extravagance and overindulgence. And they were huge. Monstrous, really, some were probably larger than most modern day studios and lofts (not really). One can still find chandeliers that harken back to those days, ornate, almost to a fault, and big enough to need their own zip code. On the flip side, contemporary chandeliers are often very understated and sleek with simple designs and a wide range of sizes. Really, the only thing these modern chandeliers have in common with their predecessors is the name. For the most part, however, their uses remain the same – entryways and dining rooms is where they work best.

Perhaps the hottest form of ceiling lighting currently is the pendant light. Pendant lighting has invaded everything from retail shops to your neighborhood Starbucks, and is slowly making its way into more and more homes. The versatility of pendants makes them ideal for any size room. Pendant lights are generally small and feature adjustable cords, so they work with a variety of ceiling heights. The best part about pendants is how customizable they are, as far designing your own formations and varying the cord heights to create your own unique look. Pendant lights work almost anywhere, but are ideal for kitchens and dining rooms.

Not as hip and sexy as pendant lighting, but perhaps more practical and useful, are ceiling mounts and track lighting units. There are plenty of flush and semi-flush mounts on the market that break from the mold of the boring square or circular models. Also, track lighting units have undergone some style changes as well, with many featuring curved or wavy bars and a wide variety of contemporary shades.

First, you need to select an overall theme. For instance, do you want a tropical polynesian “grass hut” tribal feel, a modern hawaiian home , or do you want a fun feel like being on the beach at Waikiki? I put links below I quickly found..not necessarily in best taste but to give you the basic ideas of each style.

For a “grass hut”, use natural materials and colors. The color of the walls, curtains and carpeting are as important as the items you have displayed on your furniture or on the walls. For instance, you can paint the wall a gold or medium tan color, put a hand-woven grass carpet on the floor (not expensive!), buy bamboo blinds for curtains. You can buy hand-carved wood items, and posters of tropical plants with color accents in your palette (pink, orange). And finally, if you can buy a natural or dark colored wicker or rattan chair or desk, this will help a lot! Sear’s, Pier 1, Cost Plus all sell these. Make sure all the tans and browns have the same tint or they won’t match very well, i.e., are they all “reddish”, or “greenish” or “yellowish”?

For a real “hawaiian home” feel, this is a mix of exotic tropical materials and american furniture (the missionaries that first came to the hawaiian islands to settle it were from Boston). Off-white (most popular in Hawaii itself) or muted yellow walls (not too bright) are common, with a lot of floral prints and pillows. For posters, check out Pegge Hopper who is a noted island artist famous for her paintings of hawaiian women (link below). Is there a way you can get a white rattan or wicker desk or chair? These are not expensive if you go to Pier 1 Imports or Cost Plus if there is one near your home.

I guess it depends what you pay for them, then…We bought some 6 years ago for about £6.00 each…Had to place the rechargeable batteries (2) in them for 48 hours before switching on, so they got charged up in the daylight. They are all with the original batteries, and are still going perfectly. Later we bought some more on a Bogof offer, but these were inferior in as much as they only used one battery each, so the power was not as good, thus the light was weaker. They are still working though, and have not had any problems with them.

Chances are the string of small lights would use less electrical power, assuming the bulbs are incandescent. If the bulbs are fluorescent, the power used may be about equal.

Lego rocks! Its seriously cool and one of the many things that makes it cool is the huge range of Lego Star Wars minifigs that you can buy, either in stores or from auction sites like EBay. But what if you want your Star Wars minifigs to be a little bit special? Well, one way I tried recently was to give an Imperial Stormtrooper a fantastic pair of red glow-in-the-dark eyes. Just right for an evil meanie.

So, how did I do it? Well, it was all based on an idea that I found at Big Clives website – you can see it in my resource box below.

Its a device called a Joule Thief – no that’s not someone who steals diamonds. A Joule Thief is like a torch without a case that will take either an AA or AAA battery in the holder and use whatever power is left in the battery to light a red LED. It can actually light any color of LED but Stormtroopers have got to have red eyes – right? The amazing thing about this circuit is that it will run right down to the bottom of the batteries charge if left running continuously, and will often provide a week of continuous low level light from a battery that would normally be considered dead.

So, first of all you’ll need a LEGO Star Wars minifig to mod. I used an imperial stormtrooper since the helmet makes it easy to hide the electronics and the body is quite wide – just like me!

The other items you’ll need are:

30 cm of 0.15 mm isolated copper wire.

A 1k ohm SMD resistor.

A general purpose switching SMD transistor.

A red SMD LED.

A small ferrite bead, 6 mm outer diameter.

A miniature push button.

A piece of thin copper foil for battery terminals (I butchered this piece from a PCB).

A piece of thick paper to mount behind the LED in the helmet.

and finally a small piece of flexible dark red plastic film to go in front of the LED.

First you have to decapitate your Star Wars minifigs to allow for insertion of electronics and battery.

After taking off the head, cut the helmet down a bit to make room for the electronics in the helmet, and use a small tool like a dremel to carve out enough room in the upper and lower body to make room for the battery.

Next, cut a small hole in the back to prepare for insertion of a miniature push button in the top center.

Next, assemble your Joule Thief. A full set of instructions is given at bigclives website above, but its fairly straightforward. Just wind the ferrite bead with 0.15 mm copper wire and connect up the resistor and transistor in the centre. Two wires should be left sticking out to the left to connect up the LED and another two wires left for connecting up the push button and battery.

You then need to embed the button in the back of your Lego Star Wars miifig at the top center of the body.

Finally, place the red film inside the helmet and re-assemble the minifigs. Voila – you now have a customised Star Wars minifigs that will be the envy of all of your friends.

For small bathrooms, it’s hard to find the right components to make a design that works. Obviously, one of the focal points of the bath is a beautiful vanity and finding one that is small and chic (not to mention, for the right price) can be tedious. I have this book – Talking Dirty Laundry with the Queen of Clean – and I’ve used this on alot of my whites with great success: put your whites in the washer with 6 denture cleaning tablets (1 sleeve worth of tabs) and let them soak overnight, then run as usual. They should be white again. I’ve used it on colors, but recommend that you test on one shirt before doing an entire washer full.

Solar deck lighting is an energy efficient method of providing accent and safety for any outdoor deck location. Solar deck lighting works effectively anywhere; however it is important to remember these lights require direct sunlight all or most of the day. Indirect sunlight will charge the NiCad batteries, however the charge will not last long.

Another advantage of adding solar deck lighting for safety and accent is that it can increase the value of a home. Many people deciding to purchase a home will visit in the day and night time to get a feel for the neighborhood. When they see a beautifully accented deck with solar lighting, they are more inclined to purchase the home.

Not too many people give the innovative inventions of outdoor lighting enough credit. Think about it, without outdoor lighting we wouldn’t be able to fully enjoy any of our outdoor activities to its fullest extent. Sporting activities like nightboarding and family gatherings like summer barbeques wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t have sufficient lighting. The tricky thing about outdoor lighting is that too much will most definitely be an issue. Light pollution is a high possibility, and in some places like New York and Los Angeles, are already a problem and unfortunately a norm. Consider this, if we didn’t have nighttime hours then outdoor lighting wouldn’t be necessary, but we do. Hence, outdoor lighting is a necessity, but only in moderate quantities; the best kind of outdoor lighting is a night sky full of bright stars.
