Yes – is this sconce light going to be right above your plug-in? If so, you can run a wire from your plug-in box – up into a switch – and from the switch to the sconce.

So you open up the plugin box and unscrew the plugin and pull it out so you can get into the box. Leave the wires attached. Then get a switch box and a round box for the sconce. The sconce (round) box you can get which just attaches to sheet rock. The switch box you can perhaps screw to a stud – so cut the hole right alongside a stud – then you can screw the box in diagonally with a sharp sheet rock screw. You’ll be using generally those plastic boxes which you can just screw right through.

Get a little #14 wire from the store – cut the holes for the switch and sconce boxes – and see if you can get a wire to go between the plug in and the switch box hole… might take a while – might take using a straightened out hanger. Get that wire up to the switch box hole – and then run another piece from the switch box hole to the sconce hole.

Then shove the wires through the holes in the back of the switch box and screw the switch box in place – same with the sconce box. then tie the wire to the hot and ground of the plug-in. This goes up to your switch. tie the white wires together – and switch the black (hot) line – then stick your sconce light on the white and black coming out of the sconce box.

Pretty easy. If you have to cross a stud, then you’ll have to cut out the sheet rock a little and stick it back in. It’s not too hard if you have a few sheet rock screws. Then you have to patch with a little piece of fiber tape and some plaster. Get to know somebody who plasters – they can do this for you in about 1 minute.

And there you are. Just figure if it takes you a while to do, you’ll get years of use out of it for those few minutes you spend.

The last two from overstock both come in black and look very modern; I especially like the first one from overstock. The first one (by Williams Sonoma) is nice too, but a little pricey. Have you thought about making the drapes the same color as the walls? I like that look because it doesn’t draw attention to the windows and is a more seamless look, but because your walls are lavender curtains in that shade might look too bedroomy. Is this a bedroom? My suggestion is that you have a licensed electrician look at the problem. Depending on the condition of the wiring all you may need is to replace the fixtures. If the wiring is in bad shape then you would need to have the bad section of wiring replaced. The plastic covering on wire is made especially for protecting the wire from water damage but since this is a 70s model mobile home chances are the wiring is original and probably need replacing anyway

You know what—-mirrors are not expensive.

Call a glass shop and tell them what you want. They can usually cut the glass to order, deliver and install it cheaper than you can order one from a furniture store. I used to work as a designer for a high end furniture store and I was always appalled at how expensive good mirrors were. My husband is a general contractor and we do mirrors for very expensive residential bathrooms (framed and unframed) all the time and the cost is a fraction of what the furniture store charged. Plus, you can order exactly what you want–if you can describe it or draw it–they can make it for you.

I had custom mirrors installed in my modern kitchen as a backsplash and also had a custom corner mirrored unit with 1/2 inch glass display shelves above my corner sink—whole cost? About $400 including installation–and that’s a whole lot more glass and complicated installation than one single glass mirror like you’re talking about. I’ve seen framed mirrors in catalogs go for upwards of $1000.00.

The key is to make your room cozy. If the room is small, don’t paint it with dark colors. Make it light and gentle to the eyes and avoid bulky looking furniture. French theme is good, black chandelier is good. Pitch some mirrors and walnut colored furnishings and white curtains, rag paint the walls with beige and yellow. Then again if the room is small go modern with minimal furnishings.

This is a beautiful set! You didn’t say much about your dining ROOM, however. Are the walls painted or papered? What color(s)? Is the floor hardwood, carpeted, tiled? I wish I knew so I’d have a more thorough picture of what the space was like.

You mentioned you wanted to use modern, dramatic decor. This is a very ‘classical’ ensemble, so I can’t imagine it being well-suited with anything TOO modern. You also mentioned using table mats, table runner, centerpiece, napkins/rings, etc.

My best advice is to keep it simple. Fewer pieces … but pieces that are very intentional in character. That’ll keep the space more in line with a modern look.

For example, I wouldn’t bother using place mats or napkins/rings everyday. It can give a cluttered look. What I suggest is getting an extra long table runner (something that isn’t too thick) and ‘swag’ it around the centerpiece. Use a large-scale floral arrangement for the center … you may also want to use candlesticks in addition … just swag the table runner around everything to make it “one.” Don’t concern yourself with lining everything up straight down the middle of the table, either. As long as the floral piece is centered, you can offset candlesticks but visually balance them with the use of the table runner. (Play around with it ~ you’ll see).

Depending on the color scheme of your space, you may want to consider using other colors or even a more simple arrangement.

I wish I could give you a more detailed answer insofar as what colors to use. Sometimes you can find a really nice wall art piece that’s inspirational. Again, the style of the furniture doesn’t lend itself too well to modern art, but you might be able to use something like this, which is abstract, but use a formal carved frame:

With this piece, (if you loved it), you could use the hydrangea centerpiece with light green candles in crystal candlesticks. You may want to try using a plum table swag/runner, too!

those colors sound great. you go w/ high gloss because that is a more modern feel but also because high gloss is easier to clean in a high traffic area like a kitchen. grease spatters are more easily wiped up.

BTW: while stainless steel is totally modern and cool, the new trend that’s making stainless steel look dated if for black appliances. Just last week I saw a black stainless steel refrigerator honing in on the black appliance trend.

if you can’t do anything w/ the floor but you want the feel of wood, look for a bamboo area rug/mat to put in your kitchen. they are available in a variety of colors. and you should be able to find something for under $50.

Along with the answer above me, try estate and garage sales. Usually with an estate sale someone has passed away, and their family is liquidating all the deceaseds assets in order to pay for taxes,medical bills, etc. You can find some really good deals! With garage sales, particularly look for the ones that say “moving sale”, good deals there to because the person wants to get rid of everything before they move~with moving sales you need to be there early!(right when the garage sale starts)~All the good stuff goes fast. Both these suggestion, should be advertised in your local paper in the classified section.

You need to add a little bit of some other color. Not a lot – just a touch here and there. You could do it with throw pillows, with bedding in a print that incorporates your blue and whatever other color you choose, or in other accessories. You could paint some inexpensive frames, or use sand colored frames for prints that have the colors you choose. You could add lamps with sand colored bases and shades in the additional color(s). I wouldn’t mess with the mirror – it helps make the room bigger, and you don’t want to interfere with that.

As for choosing the right “other” color, it depends on the blue you’ve chosen, and your taste. The link below is to a fantastic website called Color Schemer. People upload color schemes and you can get ideas for some colors that will go with your blue. I did a search for schemes with the color blue in them – there are over 300. Some suggestions – if your blue leans toward aqua, try adding some orange or lime green. If it’s more of a sky blue, try watermelon or sea glass green. If it’s a grey blue, try plum or light olive.

The other place to look for coordinating colors is in magazines – not just home decor magazines, but any magazine that has advertisements. Look at the colors in the ads. The people who designed the ads are experts – they know what colors work together. I quilt, and I keep a file of interesting color schemes that I took from advertisements.

Twenty two years ago, before it was even popular like it is today, I used an antique piece of furniture, cut a hole in the top, dropped in a scalloped porcelain sink , and transformed it into a working sink/vanity in my downstairs bathroom. And, the oak furniture piece cost only $165.00. Yes, I had to retrofit the drawers so they could still be used, but the end result is well worth my efforts. The style of the furniture is curved in front with a harp on the back for hanging towels, like an old fashioned wash sink to match my victorian bath. But you can use any other style to fit your decor.

I refinished the vanity with Minwax Antique Oil Rub. The oil absorbs into the wood and is waterproof. You may be tempted to finish the wood with polyurethane and although it is waterproof, it will eventually end up getting scratched and begin to lift which will result in more maintenance that you may want to dedicate to the vanity. Whereas the oil soaks into the wood, not coating the surface like the poly. And the finish is hand rubbed, leaving a wonderful patina look to the wood.

May I suggest that you skip the bathroom showrooms and go directly to the flea markets, consignment shops, antique shops and the like?
You may be surprised what you can find if you have the time to shop, because if you have more time than money, you are sure to find something that will work for your application.
