I have a goose down “feather bed” topper in my guest bedroom…so comforting to sink into when I want to take a nap. The “down” side to it’s everyday use is that you have to re-fluff them after use to keep it fairly level, even if the down is sewn into channels or squares. It needs fluffing, just like a feather pillow does. On my bed in the master bedroom, I have a very firm mattress with two 2″ memory foam pads. I got the 4″ depth which is soooo comfy, but when I want to change anything with the bed, the toppers are easy enough to move around. A single 4″ would be too heavy and cumbersome to move. They also maintain shape very well. Another consideration is making the bed. When you have a feather bed, the top comforter or covering does not look flat and pretty. When you have the memory foam pads, it all makes up nice and flat. I purchased mine from Sams Club, and they were a very decent price….well worth the excellent night’s sleep.

My freind was in the same position but because he had an almost antique bed… The other night, I slept at his place and he had bought a memory foam mattress pad. The difference was unbelievable… but true! So, I have this supposedly really great mattress… It should be, it cost an arm and a leg. But for 3 years now (and I’ve only had it for 5 yrs), every morning when I woke up, I had lower back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain. In fact, throughout the night, there was always my subconcious knowing that I wasn’t sleeping well and the discomfort would penetrate my sleep, robbing me of a good night’s sleep.

So I went out last night and bought the same memory foam mattress pad as my friend. I’m now a FIRM believer! I slept thru the whole night, without feeling any pain anywhere, and when the alarm went off this morning, I had no pain anywhere. No kidding! Get yourself one of these… and if your mattress is sagging like a hammock, then do like someone else already said, and put a piece of plywood underneath to stop that. Then put the memory foam on top. You will be amazed!

Oh… almost forgot: We both bought the mattress memory pad at WalMart. It’s 109$ Canadian (so less in US) for a queen size. I’m not sure if I remember correctly, but it seems to me I remember seeing 49$ +/- for a twin bed size. It comes in a box and is with the mattress pads in the linen section.

Oh.. one last thing: my oldest daughter is going off to college in the fall, in a dorm room just like you’re about to do. She lay down on my bed lastnight after I had made the bed with the memory foam pad and she loved it… enough to ask us for one for her dorm room. I swear…one VERY LAST THING… My youngest daughter, who is 13 going on 14 tried it too… and said she was sleeping with me. Her father could go sleep in her bed! She wants one too.

Does your husband get the same back pain? If so then it is the bed.

If not it means you actually have a few back issues that are being irritated by the bed. A good bed will help minor back problems, but if they are chronic then a new bed may accentuate them.

Fix the mattress with a topper as it will help make it more comfortable, but fix your back also.
