As some other people have said, you pretty much have to do a little sanding so the paint will be able to stick. You don’t have to remove all of the existing finish, just roughen the surface. I would use 150 or 220-grit sandpaper. Go over the surface just enough so that it doesn’t have any shine left. It won’t take very long… don’t worry.

Next, and very importantly, APPLY PRIMER! The primer is designed to stick like crazy and will enable the paint to stick to the furniture. Without it, the paint will peel right off in no time. “Kilz” is the brand that’s common around here, but any latex-based primer from a hardware store should do. It’s available in cans or spray-on.

Next… paint! I’d recomment a good quality, semi-gloss (medium-shine) latex paint for durability*. Also use a quality brush to avoid ending up with bristle marks that will detract from your finished project.

It all depends upon how it’s put together. I’m assuming if there are bolts or screws, you would have figured out how to tighten them. About every 20 years chairs will wood joints will loosen up and need to be re-glued. This is how I do it:
* Label every piece so you get it back in exactly the same position. The only thing worse than trying to decide which of 4 slightly different pieces belongs where is to discover you’ve got a piece in the wrong place or wrong orientation the next day.
* If there is an upholstered “slip” seat, remove it.
* Remove any corner blocks held in place with screws
* If there are screws or nails in the joints, remove them and throw them away. They do more damage than good.
* Knock the joints apart with a dead blow hammer
* If there are broken or weak dowels, replace them. If you need to remove a broken off stub in a hole. Drill with the next-smaller-sized drill bit, then carefully chisel out the rest.
* Clean up all the joints with sandpaper or a wire plumber’s brush. Easy does it, you don’t want to change the diameter.
* Get some white glue (plenty of closed time), and put a light layer of glue on both sides of each joint. If you have a chair with a slab seat, my preference is to lay the seat upside down and assemble the legs and stretchers. Then flip it over and do the top. If you have a frame chair, I like to do the front legs together, clamp and set aside for a minute. Then assemble the back frame (often this is OK and does not need to be disassembled). Put the front to back members on, then add the front leg assembly. Use clamps when needed.
* Replace the corner blocks if any.
* Set the chair up on a known flat surface and wrestle it into position where it sits level.
* Wipe off excess glue with a damp rag and double check all the joints for tightness
* Leave undisturbed for 6 hours or more.

For the living room, i suggest a color called “reddened earth” by sherwin williams. it will coordinate with the sofa to create a warm natural feel in the room.

As for the bedroom, i think a mauve, like “damsel,” would look good with the brown.

Quilting machines, in particular, are specifically designed to make the quilting experience easy and trouble-free, and also provide the quilter with a machine that can give a professional finish to any project.

A quilting machine has special features which include:

Extended Bed Space

The bedspace is the working area located between the needle and the inside of the machine. An extended bed space offers an area of approximately 8-9†wide by 5-6†high, which is larger than a standard sewing machine and provides more than ample space for a quilter to maneuver bulky quilts or large pieces of fabric

High Speed

Most top-of-the-line quilting machines offer high speed stitching which is usually around 1000 stitches per minute. The high speed rating is normally applied to the straight stitch only, with slightly reduced speed for decorative stitches. This feature offers the quilter the ability to quickly piece and quilt their project.

Stitch Regulator

Some manufacturers offer an optional attachment for their machines called a stitch regulator. The purpose of the stitch regulator is to provide a consistent stitch length when doing free motion quilting, regardless of how slow or fast the fabric is being moved.

Quilting Stitches

Specialty quilting stitches, such as buttonhole appliqué and faux hand-quilting stitches, offer a quick and simple alternative to these traditional hand-quilting techniques.

Manual Tension Control

Some quilting machines are equipped with a manual tension control. This control offers the quilter the ability to regulate the top thread tension quickly and accurately. This offers an advantage over machines with automatic tension control. As quilters often use different weights of thread in the top and bobbin, proper tension control becomes critical. With a manual control a quilter can easily and incrementally fine tune their top tension as they are stitching. With an automatic control it is necessary to access the settings within the control panel of the machine which takes longer and can be less accurate.

Manual Stitch Length/Width Control

As with the manual tension control, a manual stitch length/width control is also located on the front of the machine and similar benefits apply.

Needle Up/Down

A needle up/down setting allows the user to stop sewing with the needle in the down position. This is an advantage when working with heavy quilts or when doing free motion quilting. When stopping with the needle down, there is less chance of the quilt slipping providing a continuous stitch line.

Auto thread cutter

An automatic thread cutter is a very useful feature on a quilting machine. Cutting both the top thread and the bobbin thread in one simple action, it reduces both thread wastage and the time taken to manually trim thread tails.

Feed Dogs Control

Dropping the feed dogs allows your quilt to move easily when doing free motion quilting.

When deciding if a quilting machine is right for you, shop around and visit your local sewing machine dealers. Try out two or three models and then decide which one is for you.

Because you have darker color furniture I would go with some warmer colors for your rooms. I painted my kitchen a very light yellow Devoe paint and the painted the ceiling a lighter shade which was called Heritage Ivory. It is a lighter yellow than the walls, but it brightens up my kitchen and everyone compliments the ceiling paint. In my dining room I painted a sky blue with white trim. My living roon is a moss green which is a very popular color. It is also light but very warm. My colors all go togerther. You could do a red in your dining room if you want a more dramatic effect, which would go with your brown furniture nicely.
Your bedroom I think you can do any color you want. There are so many different greens that are so beautiful.
My advise would be to go to the paint store and get tons of color swatches. What a color looks like in the store looks so much different outside or at your house. Usually we tend to think we need the darker colors, but they usually end up being a mistake. The people at the store can give you good advise. You might want to ask them what the most popular colors right now are. I did not take this man’s advice once about a yellow and i went home and found that it was the most hidious color ever. Ha.
You can also buy a pint of different colors you like and then paint about a 16×20 square on one of your walls in the room you are considering it for and then on another wall in the same room use another one of your sample paints and then just look at it for a few days to decide. Ask family and friends too.
It is so much fun once you get started.
Sherwin Williams or Devoe paints you can’t go wrong with. If you go with a cheaper brand you sometimes have to use 3 coats which is way to much work. I would also choose a satin finish which is more expensive, but beautiful. The colors will look the best if they compliment each other so that they flow well together.

It sounds like your HVAC system is not balanced, that is, the amount of air needed for individual rooms or levels is not evenly dispersed based on need. Since hot air rises, excess heat will work it’s way to upper levels.

Check a few things first.

1. You should have a “return” grate upstairs in the hallway. This will be a larger size grate that you can’t close. Make sure it’s not blocked. In some houses, the HVAC filter is actually in the return and when clogged, will dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the return. Shine a flashlight through the grate to see if there’s a filter there. If so, unscrew the grate, replace the filter. You should have one downstairs too, check this one also.

2. If you’re running the heat, close all the supply ducts upstairs. Open all the supply ducts downstairs to full open. Let the house balance for 1 day. If things are more comfortable, leave them this way until the cooling season.

3. If you’re running the cooling system, open all the ducts upstairs and close all the ducts downstairs. Again, let the house balance for a day.

In either case, it’s not likely you’ll get exactly what you’re looking for, so you may have to adjust individual room ducts. Have patience, and give the system a little time to work.

If this doesn’t seem to help, it’s likely the ductwork itself is not flowing fully to one level or the other. This will require some carefull testing of each duct to see what amount of air flow each one has. If one is blocked, or has excess leakage, it has to be cleaned out, or worse, the walls opened up to seal the leakage. In too many cases, sloppy ductwork assembly by the installation contractor leads to poorly performing systems. A reputable contractor should be able to determine which of these solutions is most likely to work.

By the way, adding another thermostat won’t do any good unless you have an HVAC system for each area the thermostat controls, called a “zone”. Dual zone systems generally means there will be two fully separate HVAC systems, for instance, one system controls the upstairs, another the downstairs. This is the most efficient way to heat/cool, but the up front costs of installation is much higher. Most homes don’t have dual zones.
